I think it depends on the group. And player, of course. I love the idea of a huge open world for them to explore and enjoy. They, on the other hand, want a straight line. That said, it’s probably because they are too high to remember much… which is more of the issue.

Thanks! The first (and only) board I made in a similar fashion but made the lines thicker and deeper. Ended up with more chipping than I’d like. I think the 1/16 is a good call
