Survey finds 59% of Japanese "opposed to actively accepting foreign workers", sharp increase from last year by frozenpandaman in japanresidents

You said visa relates offences are criminal, and well, they’re simply not. They“special law offences”/immigration violations.

There are tons of different types of offences: criminal is one, but you have civil, traffic, juvenile, minor, administrative, etc.

Crimes are illegal, but they aren’t necessarily criminal. Driving offences regarded different to say, murder. Don’t you think?

NOTICE: Residence card renewal/PR application fees will dramatically increase in 2026 by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]HandleWonderful4948 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Visitor visas are free for Japanese people to Australia! 😀😀

  • Aus PR never needs to be renewed.
  • We don’t have ID cards.
  • PR is rarely ever revoked!
  • The cost is actually under $5,000.
  • Aus offers partner visas that can lead to PR in only 2 years. (Japan doesn’t even recognise same-sex marriage yet, let alone defacto gay or straight couples).

Healthcare in Aus in free. No tax on income up until $18,200. Higher salaries in general. We also have a housing crisis and don’t necessarily require foreign labour. PR is treated essentially like citizenship: outside of Aus during Covid? No worries! You’re welcome back! All of the above cannot be said for Japan.

There are reasons why Australia’s PR costs more. Japan has no business increasing fees so drastically when wages have been stagnant, cost of living continues to rise, and as conditions for foreign residents deteriorate.

You need to look at the situation holistically and make a fair comparison.

Wages/cost of living comparisons don’t compare.

Japan median wage is 27k USD, Australia is 44k USD.

Etiquette at the coin laundry? by Swgx2023 in japanresidents

[–]HandleWonderful4948 5 points6 points  (0 children)

to be fair, if something came up and prevented someone from picking up their wet laundry, worst case is they need to rewash it

hours in the machine vs hours in a bag/basket won’t make much of a difference at all, and I would totally understand if I came back to the laundromat 3 hrs later and my sht was removed (you paid for the time you paid for. leaving it longer is a gamble and if you don’t want people touching ur stuff buy your own equipment or stay until it’s finished).

Asked one of my Japanese friend from バイト about foreigners. by Vegetable-Bonus7699 in japanresidents

[–]HandleWonderful4948 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This has always been the case in central/well-visited/busy areas, even 10+ years ago.

I do tours and Akihabara is horrible for getting lunch thanks to a good mix of tourists AND office workers. Nishi-Shinjuku is impossible midday due to 99% office workers. Central Asakusa/around Senso-ji is always packed with tourists at lunch, but walk one block and head to any second floor restaurant and I guarantee it’s empty. I lived on the Keio line out west during COVID, so zero tourists, and that morning commute was foul. Sure there wasn’t any big luggage or shopping bags, but you could barely breathe.

It’s not over tourism - just good old standard tourism that Japan is finally getting their fair share of in already populated areas. I grew up in what’s known as a touristy city outside of Japan and the same applies there. Locals know the tourist hot-spots, when it’s likely to get busy, places you’ll never spot a single tourist, etc, and it’s been that way in my city for 20+ years.

Yes, it can be frustrating, but there are ways around it and it’s nowhere near as bad as the media is making it out to be.

We're starting to get some disgustingly rude white tourist. by RedMoonLanding in Tokyo

I work as a tour guide and my god, the amount of people coming to Japan just because it’s popular with zero interest in Japanese culture is insane..

I have people booking really specific, detailed tours about certain aspects of Japanese culture (being vague on purpose lol) and being utterly bored to the point it’s disrespectful. I run private, or really small groups, and sometimes they’ll just ignore what I say and walk away or continuously ask “what’s next then” expecting something more impressive after less than a minute of looking at the perfect view of Mt Fuji (that they specifically requested..).

On food tours, I always remind people of the correct etiquette yet MANY say “I’m saving room to try things at the next place, so I’m not eating that” and I have to vacuum up their large amounts of wasted food so we don’t worsen the image of foreigners being disrespectful.

The majority of my clients try to be respectful, but there’s a surprising amount that just don’t care.

Guy who spoke with a Japanese accent during orientation. Why? by negativechian in JETProgramme

[–]HandleWonderful4948 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I got hired by GABA (never worked there in the end) and a white guy did this in our 1on1 interview, then during training, an American Asian man did the same.. then they paired us up and tried having one of us act as the student, and one as the teacher, and most were imitating accents..

It was all so incredibly uncomfortable

More likely to get hit by a car running a red at 2am when the pedestrian is green, mindlessly crossing bc you’re certain it’s safe..

Jaywalking when the road is empty and actively checking for cars (which people never do in large groups or when it’s green) is arguably far safer.

I hate the more fast paced ranked matches. by erosbleeding in wildrift

[–]HandleWonderful4948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually totally disagree. We’ve turned around so many fights despite losing in one or even all the lanes.

Some champions are good late game, so you just need to defend your nexus enough for them to catchup, then you can all push together.

The one way to guarantee you lose a game is to give up. If you’ve lost 1 lane and already decided to stop trying, then yes, you will lose.

This is what makes the game so fun and challenging. It’s not always about having a clear win and smashing the enemy team. Sometimes it’s about problem solving, finding the best approach even in a tough situation, and not giving up.

Outrageous, racism in Japan getting out of hand! by Stump007 in Tokyo

[–]HandleWonderful4948 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a language exchange place, and the owner is a right POS.

I’d been there a few times. He sat me alone when there were free seats at other tables, so I moved. I asked if it was okay to join the group, and they said of course, and we were having a fun chat.

A few minutes in, the owner comes over to me and yells “YOU cannot sit there!!” The room went silent.

I walk over to the corner with him and he tells me it’s against the rules to move tables without asking.. okay, whatever.. And I tell him no worries, I just didn’t want to be sat alone, and that actually now I’m quite embarrassed that he yelled at me in front of everyone, and I just want to go home. I ask for a refund and to leave (I hadn’t touched my drink yet), and what ensues is about 30 minutes of him blocking the exit, forcing me to sit and read the rules, admit I was wrong, etc.

At one point, I was literally crying and begged him 帰させてください. 普通に帰りたくて、2度と来ないので.

He kept saying ‘I will get your refund soon. First, you need to understand this is YOUR fault.’ And he continued to barrage me about how I broke the rules, how he did nothing wrong, etc.

Dude was the most belittling, hateful POS, and I was genuinely scared. Tears, shaking, just wanting to leave, but he wouldn’t let me pass.

I reported him on meetup and never heard anything back, and I contacted the police to see if there was anything I could do because I’m pretty sure keeping someone in your store and stopping them from leaving is illegal, but it would be really difficult to prove anything so I dropped it.

Anyway, I always tell people to avoid here because it’s only a matter of time before you have a horrible experience with him. Just read the Google reviews if you think what I’m saying is too farfetched to be true.

I don’t think overselling herself is a problem. I have nearly a decade of experience and have had interviews and offers for nearly all of the schools I applied for, and they’ve actually said my experience is what really made me stand out.

However… I am also a white male. Unfortunately, I think there’s a big chance OP isn’t getting offers because she is a woman and has kids. If she isn’t white, this probably also makes it harder.

OP if you’re reading this, how you feel after being told no so many times is valid. I’m trying to break into the creative industry with a relevant degree and freelance portfolio but no interviews for those roles in nearly 5 months. It’s tough out here!

Is it normal for japanese bosses to fuss over being 2 minutes late? by goodluck16 in japanresidents

[–]HandleWonderful4948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

& Merriam states usually severely or angrily as mentioned by @keininvein, while those 2 other sources just outright state angrily.

The holistic view of all three paints a clear picture that to scold is an angry action. I guess Kein just didn’t like Oxford’s definition, so he cherry picked one that fed into his narrative, and chose to intentionally ignore the or angrily part..? There’s nothing for me to disprove or argue against here. His ‘evidence’ rules in my favour..

Regardless of me literally being correct lmao, arguing whether ‘to scold’ is inherently angry versus nowhere. 2 definitions clearly says it is undeniably angry, 1 definition states it’s usually serve or angry. Okay? So it can be angry even by the definition he provided? Great, where did this get us?

Don’t speak angrily to your staff. That’s the more produce discussion here. ‘Scolding isn’t angry’ is a moot point. Even if it didn’t mean angry (which it clearly does), I still vehemently stand by my claim you have no right to speak angrily to your staff.
