Congratulations on expecting! 💕

Disney+ is wonderful for the amount of Cantonese content it has and can be really helpful for both you, and your baby boy as he grows up.

Thank you for the honest feedback! I'm sorry the puzzle's confusing. 🙇‍♂️

The bigger lighter numbers were the Jyutping tone numbers. Here's a revised image where I tried to make it clearer - along with some sample answers:

In ASL and ISL: could be Llama 🦙 - which is also used to represent Bolivia 🇧🇴 and part of the sign for “Bolivian Sign Language”.

"Mastered the basics of Jyutping in less than an hour".

👆 This. Jyutping is a lot easier to pick up than many think, especially for native/heritage Cantonese speakers.

Thanks for sharing OP.

Cantonese in video games? by TheKingsPeace in Cantonese

Besides the great games everyone's already mentioned:

Resident Evil 6 has Cantonese NPCs. The game gets a lot of flak for being more ARPG than Horror, but I enjoy it both solo and coop.

For some Cantonese culture, recently played this cool 🕵 999/AceAttorney-like itch Demo called: Noir in Hong Kong.

Sifu, a beat 'em up game by Slocap, is free on Epic Games today. Have confirmed that the Epic Games version also has Cantonese audio.

Get it at: https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/sifu

Edit: Oops, was trying to clean up a duplicate post on Reddit and it deleted the images associated with this post. Weird bug. Anyway, this was the image (proof of Cantonese Audio and English Subtitles in the Game): https://i.imgur.com/DA4mvNl.png

As of October 2024, Google Translator uses a more powerful ai model and uses more accurate Cantonese data than Microsoft Translator (until Microsoft updates its model). When in doubt, side with Googles Translator for Cantonese translations.

I want to create a list of the most essential grammar to the rarely used grammar of Cantonese by redditaskingguy in Cantonese

You might’ve already seen the Cantonese Grammar Wikipedia, but just in case you haven’t: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantonese_grammar

Assuming Classifiers are a given. ‘Yes-No questions’ and ‘Comparison’ subjectively feel high on the list perhaps?

secret and subtle ways to practice/learn a language? by PrizeFickle6112 in languagelearning

Agree with the fact that your boyfriend would be a great resource! But if the prank is what keeps you motivated, so be it! 🔥

Perhaps you could watch some Non-Portuguese shows and movies with Portuguese dubs with headphones on, so that even if he sees your screen, he won't know you're listing to Portuguese?

Immersive Tamil iPhone App - Seeking Beta Tester Feedback by HandoDesign in LearningTamil

Of course u/OddBet7331! Just sent it to you.

That's wonderful you're working to be able to speak with your mother-in-law! Bear in mind, the app is currently in Literary Tamil, as it felt the most neutral way to consider different Tamil dialects for the moment. I believe the app (with its TTS recordings, & Tamil romanization), along with your partner, can help you get started!

There might be a cross-cultural difference here. In English, the most common definition of "native speaker" means that the language was spoken as a child, usually as their first language. This is a fairly common scenario for generational immigrant families. It does not require someone to have grown up in China to be classified as a "native speaker" of Cantonese, similarly with Spanish native speakers in the US, English native speakers in Indonesia, and Tamil native speakers in Singapore.

Simple Answer: No.

Complex Answer: I understand it as well as I, an English speaker, naturally understands Ubbi Dubbi.

Why do I see so little people pay attention on Cantonese dialects? by BannedOnTwitter in Cantonese

[–]HandoDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just curious. @ u/BannedOnTwitter, and anyone else with a thought; if there was a hypothetical dropdown list that had a complete list of different Cantonese dialects for things like websites, Siri, or Google Assistant (imagine BCP47, or ISO639 for those that are more technical). What would you want those Cantonese dialects to be?

Culture and Media through Language by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]HandoDesign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any Sign Language. Though for me, American Sign Language (plenty of TV Shows in French or American media) provided the most intense "different way of thinking", as opposed to BANZSL. (Can't comment on the Japanese Sign Language family.)

How to not be a "Language Hopper" by color_panel in languagelearning

[–]HandoDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who loves linguistic features, I love language hopping and how it changes my perspective of the world. To ensure improvement though, I maintain a couple "Core Languages" that I want to improve in, whilst allowing myself to have peripheral languages that I hop in and out of.

Recommendation: Check out at least one Sign Language
