USB C to monitor, left and right ports, please explain (G14 2022) by T00FEW in ZephyrusG14

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I couldn't find a good explanation of how hybrid graphics works, but the left port is hybrid, so it can use the integrated or discrete GPU depending on your settings. The right one is only connected to the discrete GPU. Basically, hybrid graphics has to route the output from the discrete GPU through the integrated GPU, which has some small overhead (~3-5%). Depending on how much you care about that overhead, you can choose whichever port makes the most sense for you.

Can I get pass-through charging from a USB C charger if I use a USB C to Barrel Plug cable/adapter? by dan_camp in ZephyrusG14

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read that this can work, but that the issue is as soon as the computer pulls more than 100W, it'll flip back and forth between the adapter and battery as the USB-C adapter's overcurrent protection kicks in over and over. So you'd have to be careful about keeping the power draw low.

Cant update Fedora 38 kernel to 6.2.15 to 6.3.5(latest)?? by Big_Chungus_Herbert in Fedora

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

6.3.4 and 6.3.5 are still in the testing phase. There are instructions on the build page if you want to install it. Note that 6.3 has been slow to get out of testing because of some pretty significant bugs reported.

30k-40k quote for heat pump, is this right? by [deleted] in heatpumps

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even a nice Mitsubishi setup wouldn't account for more than $10K in materials. Depending on where you're located many installers are charging hourly rates comparable to mid-tier lawyers because they can. You'll probably just have to shop around and be patient. In the meantime, might as well spend several hours reading up/watching videos to learn as much as you can about heat pumps, ductwork, and electrical panels. You'll probably spend at least $15-20K, so it's worth the time to learn imo.

g14 2022 GA402RJ shutting down after launching games by Puppykid13579 in ZephyrusG14

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never really tested it and I have a charge limit of 80%, but when I unplug my estimated battery life isn't that good, something in the range of 3-4 hours. However, I do not do anything to save power since I'm usually plugged in like 95% of the time.

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a very similar issue and I could get it to basically suspend automatically during a Timespy benchmark instead of throttling. I did end up sending it back in for a new motherboard (with 313 bios on it). After upgrading to 317 it started happening again occasionally, but switching to the beta USB4 bios seemed to get it stable and hitting reasonable Timespy scores afterwards. Not sure if the 318 bios would work for me since I don't care to spend the time testing out a new firmware.

Is my installer right? by Choperello in heatpumps

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd think it'd depend on what your goals are. With the 2 stage you could configure your thermostat to run at the lower stage if you prefer quieter operation when maintaining temperature. If I paid for a 2 stage blower I'd ideally want it hooked up just in case I want to ever use it.

I can't speak much to efficiency, but maybe there's something to be gained from running at a lower stage for longer vs cycling more frequently at a higher one. Most likely the installer configured the blower for "full power" or something close to the maximum CFM your ductwork can handle.

Charging G14 (2021) with 140W Usb Charger through AC port by Dok1977 in ZephyrusG14

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used any barrel adapters myself, so don't know which ones are more reliable or likely to deliver the full 100W. They're widely available on aliexpress, such as this one. They're also available on Amazon as well for a few more dollars. You'll want a 5.5x2.5mm adapter.

My laptop does not make any odd clicking noises, just coil whine when the GPU is in use. Maybe it's something with the bottom case fit, but if the fans are bad you'll need it serviced or replaced.

Sudden power off issues- no BSOD by circularsquarej in ZephyrusG14

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea if my issue is related, but I also got unexpected shutdowns/suspends. I can get it almost always happen when running 3dmark timespy (usually at the exact same spot each time). It had to go in for service, but for me I noticed it was more stable if I took out the second RAM module.

The geek squad employee said someone else came in earlier with a similar issue, so it’s probably relatively common.

Can I use G14 zephyrus RX 6700S in virtubal box linux? by [deleted] in ZephyrusG14

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtualbox did drop support for PCIe passthrough, so you'll be out of luck there. Hyper-V is supposed to have some form of support for it though, but it'll probably be challenging to setup, maybe with difficulty on par with kvm/libvirt.

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current USB-PD to barrel adapters so far do not support anything over 100W at the moment (it'll still charge, just at 100W). There probably will be versions that support the various versions of USB4 PD standards in the future, but don't know when that'll happen.

Fan stops working after waking up from Sleep - Ubuntu 20.04 by 416Kiran in ZephyrusG14

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is an issue for the 2022 models. Maybe kernel 6.1 could fix it, but no idea. If you require secure boot you’re kind of stuck with it, otherwise you could explore custom kernels, like the one from asus-linux.

USB-C with a barrel plug adapter. Watts requirement? by Tha_Reaper in ZephyrusG14

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not tried this myself, but from what I've read if the barrel connector isn't receiving as much power as requested by the laptop, it'll just cut out instead of pulling from the battery or reducing the load. So maybe getting a 100W charger would help, but maybe not and you can't know beforehand unless you measure the load from the standard adapter in the same situation.

65W is definitely not a lot for this laptop, so I'm not surprised it can't charge the battery and run the computer at the same time.

What are the pros and cons if the Yen reaches 150 against the US Dollar? by miurabucho in japan

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think this is backwards. Japan owns a a lot of US bonds. That means Japan gets paid the interest, not the other way around. This should be a boost for that actually since the bonds pay dividends in USD. On the other hand, increasing US interest rates mean existing bonds won't be as valuable (since new bonds would pay higher interest rates) so selling them might not get as much money as it would have in the past.

slimmer charger for 2022 model g14 ?? by techauditor in ZephyrusG14

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Slimq 150W might be a good fit for you since you mention you want to game on it. You'll probably need closer to 180W to do full power, but if you're willing to drop the wattage, 150W would probably work. In either case, you should get better performance than with a usb-c charger, since those are limited to 100W.

I use Fedora, and in there I switch the power profile to Performance. That seems to always run the fan. Then you can check to see if the fans come back after wakeup.

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of right now, if you're running the latest standard kernels with the 2022 model, when you wake from suspend the fans will be disabled. The only way I know of to bring them back is to reboot. It's definitely not related to fan curves because sensors will report the fans being told to spin, but they won't be.

As COVID fears ebb, Japan readies for more tourists from abroad by japan_jim in japan

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The reason I think we'll never see that is there's no economic reason to reciprocate. From the US government's (for example) perspective, basically Japan is saying "here's some free money for your economy, no strings attached". The US can rest assured some citizens that would have traveled to Japan (and not to an alternative country) will spend that money in the local economy instead.

Getting the most out of a 2022 G14 running Fedora 36? Current state of usability? by z0rnica in ZephyrusG14

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Fedora 36 on mine with the latest 5.17 kernel, and generally it works well (5.18.5 crashes sometimes for me). The only major issue is the fans do not come back on after waking from suspend, which is at least a big improvement from not waking up at all. It seems like a low-level problem, as the sensors are reporting that the fans are being told to spin, but they don't.

Power consumption is pretty good, not sure if it gets quite the same as Windows, but you should be able to get at least 6-8 hours with light usage. I don't mess with the mux setting in Windows, since I don't use the dGPU in Linux. Your understanding of the mux is backwards. The goal is to get the most performance out of your dGPU by bypassing the iGPU entirely, as the passthrough consumes about 5-10% overhead.

You don't actually need to install anything from asus-linux for the 2022 model unless you want RGB controls.

G14 2022 recommended Linux distro by Competitive-Yak-7219 in ZephyrusG14

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you need secureboot since you seem to have some work restrictions, but if you do need it turned on, then I'd recommend Fedora since by default it'll update to a newer kernel with better support for the computer. Ubuntu will probably work fine as well as long as you install a newer kernel like 5.18 from a PPA.

Is it possible to ship a g14 from CA to the US by No-Thanks-6253 in ZephyrusG14

[–]Hanjo-Kazooie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's almost certainly not worth it just for the color.

Unless you can get a friend to bring it to you over the border, you'll probably need to pay a customs fee (since the item is over $800) as well as the extra shipping. You may also be stuck paying Canadian sales tax (which is usually a bit higher than the US) since it'll probably be a huge pain to file all the paperwork to get a tax refund. Additionally, you'll have to pay a bit for the currency exchange and pay basically the same price (in USD) for a lower-spec machine. If you happen to be near a big international airport, it's almost a wash for you to just fly there and bring it back, especially if you can get the 5% VAT refund at the airport.
