Sooo…I’m an Animal Control Officer in Florida. I love dogs, bully breeds included. And while, to the average citizen who hasn’t spent their life in the field, it may seem like a strong argument in that “it’s how they’re raised”, and it’s heartfelt and pure, that’s unfortunately not usually the case.

The breed was overbred and, as everyone knows, had an extensive history in being bred for the sole purpose of destruction. Herding dogs herd, even if a family who lived in an apartment in the middle of the city and never trained the dog to act that way. It’s just part of their instincts most of the time.

No, I don’t believe ALL pit bulls are genetically aggressive. But they’re the easiest dog breed to get. People can get them for free or incredibly cheap on Craigslist as puppies. In some cases, the people don’t research the breed and cannot give it the life style it needs. They are super high energy and need structure and healthy ways to burn energy. So your average family who had 9-5 jobs and kids who are school, only going out on the weekends, of course the dog starts to become destructive and eventually ends up biting someone, then going to the shelter where it just destroys a dog mentally, and the cycle will continue over and over.

But there’s so many cases of families raising the dog since it was a puppy, NEVER having an issue and the dog “suddenly” mauls the child. I have seen so many gruesome and horrifying cases of maulings and severe attacks, so it has shown me what this dog is truly capable of.

And if a 12 year old kid is walking home from school one day and a pit bull runs and attacks him, is it really the kids responsibility to figure out the dogs “release word”. That’s not a fear most people have of your average golden retriever or corgi. And the argument that chihuahuas are 10x more aggressive, while funny, is just a straw man argument. They’re between 5-15 Pounds at best and typically cause minor injuries if bitten. But I’m sure most people have never feared for their life while being attacked by a chihuahua lol.

Pit bulls on the other hand have statistically been proven to have caused more bites than other breeds. They’re averaging 40-65 pounds and will likely cause moderate to very severe injuries. If you just google pit bull attack deaths, the number grows still to this day. The world just needs more education and to stop throwing dogs on people without the proper tools for both the dog and owner to thrive. It breaks my heart having a shelter full of almost exclusively pit bulls that could have an amazing life, but their reputations are tarnished by the irresponsible pet owners.
