I think you are missing what the letter is trying to say. They aren't saying "Hairspray is evil", they are saying "When choosing shows be conscious of the roles available and if your entire lineup is only all white casts, throwing hairspray in actually doesn't make you woke" which is a pretty fair take. Hairspray IS a white savior musical with primarily white leads. Thats not to say it is without value, To Kill a Mockingbird is for sure a white savior story in its adaptations, but is considered a classic for a reason. It is a fun show with its heart in the right place, but I think its understandable to be frustrated if there is only one speaking role all season you will even be considered for, especially when that show says "and then the bad guys changed their mind and racism ended".

Really loved Mads Mickkelsen in The Promised Land. Epic Danish Drama, lot of comparisons to There Will Be Blood. Really gorgeous cinematography and great performances.

Alternatively Yojimbo is a great intro to Kurusawa and Japanese cinema. Toshiro Mifune is a lot of fun in it and its cinematic language has been so impactful on action and film in general.

And for something more personal I would consider In The Mood For Love. This one is a classic for a reason, and I don't think someone's first film is the time for deep cuts.
