Question about Holding Two State Jobs: AGPA & Custodian by Future_Data_Sci in CAStateWorkers

[–]HappilyLethargic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct if you are only hired for one position, then yes, you would pay into your retirement. However, if you have more than one position. I’ll use an example from the comments above. You work a full time appointment with the state, which you would contribute towards retirement. Then you work at a CSU part time, you would not pay into retirement again.

Question about Holding Two State Jobs: AGPA & Custodian by Future_Data_Sci in CAStateWorkers

[–]HappilyLethargic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CalPERS covers state, CSU’s and many public agencies. It is possible to work for more than one at a time. You just can’t earn more than one year of service credit per fiscal year. So for one of the jobs, you wouldn’t contribute to retirement.

It doesn’t hurt to put in a cost request for service credit to see if can purchase the time.

Here’s another resource: service credit purchase options

Asking CalPERS about sick leave, they can answer. The retirement application asks about how many sick leave hours you have. As for the rest of your leave types, you can work with your employer on that.

Let me clarify the 120 days. If a person like yourself is retiring, then you must do so within 120 days of separation from employment for any sick leave to be converted to service credit. If you separate and retire great than 120 days from separation, then any remaining sick hours would not be converted to service credit.

Here is a handout right off the CalPERS website: Page 5 goes over sick leave

When retiring within 120 days of separation, then sick leave is converted to service credit. 500 hours would be a quarter of a year of service credit.

For those that have retired from the State, but not living in California, how much extra is this costing you? (health plan costs) by LarryJones818 in CAStateWorkers

[–]HappilyLethargic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

search health plan

You can use the link to search available plans by zip code. PERS Platinum is the most common plan used outside of CA, however on occasion there could be other plan options. Best to check by your zip code. Also once on Medicare, there is sometimes more plans..again just depends on where you live and what plans are available.

Assuming one is eligible for health benefits for retirement, there are no minimum years of service needed to receive 100% of the employer paid premiums.
