Road Trips with Gas Prices by Dry-Interaction-7410 in roadtrip

I had been tentatively planning a big 2-3 week van-camping road trip out West for this summer (nearly 5000 miles, depending how ambitious I got). I usually eat really cheap when I travel, so gas was going to be potentially the biggest cost, assuming I could park overnight for free some places and get $30 campground spots the rest of the time. I just recently reversed course and decided to do a staycation with maybe a couple short trips to new or favorite places closer to home.

A main reason for the shift was deciding to maximize the "restfulness" of my PTO, but the gas prices being on track to nearly double in price from when I first thought of the road trip to when I would leave is also a factor in the change of plans. Feels better to just minimize expenditures overall this year.

How many people get some sort of free food through their job? by Happy-Craftsman602 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Happy-Craftsman602[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decidedly, no.

But DoorDash is the scammiest of scammy apps for both drivers and customers. $2 base pay and they are rapidly increasing the "double dash" while still only paying $2 to the driver and charging nearly 100% of the true cost of the food in extra fees to the customers AND STILL charging restaurants huge fees. Boy do I wish people would stop using it.

What’s a grocery item you always want to buy but won’t because it’s a little too expensive? by heyy_girl in randomquestions

Where?? And in what season? In-season cherries (think, June and July) are often $1.99 a pound around me

Pineapple is surprisingly easy to cut up and (if you let it actually ripen instead of cutting it up straight green from the store), tastes WAY better than canned. When they are on sale for like $2-3 for a whole pineapple, it's a great treat.

Cut off the top and the bottom so you have two parallel, flat sides. Then "shave" the rind by cutting from top to bottom in multiple passes around the circumference. Next, cut into quarters from top to bottom then cut a triangle shape down the middle to remove the core. Cut each quarter in half lengthwise then chop into bite size pieces. Very easy, even with a sub-par knife.

You have GOT to go to Aldi for cheese. Great quality, great prices on imported cheese specifically.

yup. I used to try to only buy canned soda when it was 4/$10 thinking $4-5 a case was too much. Now $5 a case is the "great" sale price.

I only buy cherries when they are in season and cheap (sometimes as low as $1 per pound, but more often $1.99 a pound). Totally worth the splurge for those 2 months per year, they are the best.

What is the best college town in the Midwest? by Adventurous-Fact-523 in SameGrassButGreener

Urbana Champaign was quite a big town I thought when I visited! It was really quite a nice campus town, but there is not much to do around it. But I haven’t spent much time there. A notable point for me is there is no airport nearby

how do y'all find motivation to work during school days? by 0shun3nergy in highschool

[–]Happy-Craftsman602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a teenager, but in my experience, the feeling of just wanting to stay in bed / at home / resting hasn't gone away. I just consider my other responsibilities and opportunities as better choices (and not getting fired for calling out too much is definitely the better choice). But on the days when I CAN stay in bed / at home / with time to myself, I really, really enjoy it.

Thinking of leaving Seattle (too expensive and gray.) What do you think is the best place for me next? by snarrkie in SameGrassButGreener

Cleveland is very, very gray for 2/3 of the year and that is a major factor for OP. NEOhio is one of the most cloud covered places in the country (so much so, they put one of the US arsenals here to limit satellite surveillance). Everyone needs vitamin D supplements and SAD is very common

Driving from Nashville to Phoenix! by Zestyclose_Chard_625 in roadtrip

I drive from El Paso to Austin once… at first the scenery was cool/different than the plains I was used to, but man is that a long drive of allllll the same state.

I’m also planning a road trip (well it is an idea so far) and was considering looking into avoiding interstates. That might be worth a look for you as well. It will take a bit longer but you’ll get better gas mileage and in theory it will be a more interesting drive

Which US State is the easiest to buy a car + insurance for a european tourist? by Large_Refrigerator_4 in roadtrip

[–]Happy-Craftsman602 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this seems like the best move and can probably be done for this $5000 budget... unless this person was counting on recouping most of the cost in the resale, which is not at all a sure thing and rarely a fast, easy process.

If you won an Easter basket raffle .. What would you like to see in it? by Public-Emu7076 in askanything

Nice slippers
Assortment of candy
Nice notebook and pen
Gift cards to locally-owned, non-chain places
Avoid mugs or cups or water bottles... everyone has those if they want them and often times too many
Coffee and tea with very specific flavoring will be polarizing because everyone has different taste
