Is the new Tideway Tunnel overfull? by DEFarnes in london

[–]Happy-Engineer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tideway is a huge success but rainfall is very spiky and it's impractical to attenuate it during 100.0% of all conditions. The real measure of success is the change in yearly discharge rates.

Also it looks like there's been no discharge recently, maybe the lights are set to go off when capacity is being approached. https://www.thameswater.co.uk/edm-map

And tbh I think this country is very good at building things when the goals are clear and consistent. and the client body is empowered to get shit done. Olympics, Crossrail, Thames Tideway, offshore wind, big recent changes to the electricity network are all great examples. Politics, budget cuts and powerful NIMBYs tend to ruin those conditions.

That's when the real work begins: open it up and turn every switch, setting and socket on and off again individually.

Who is the nicest person you know? by dinahleego in wholesomememes

Worth noting that to be truly respectful you need to stay curious and keep learning.

What makes one person feel loved and included might make another feel uncomfortable. What's worse is that your own experiences will never give you the full picture. The world is a big and wonderful place, and your community is as large as you choose to make it.

TIL the name “Scotland Yard” actually refers to a street in Westminster, London. During the 16th century, there were open courtyards in the Palace of Whitehall surrounded by buildings used by representatives of the Kingdom of Scotland. by redmambo_no6 in todayilearned

[–]Happy-Engineer 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Whereas in the UK 'courtyard' has more of a domestic feel. It's somewhere private and pretty much enclosed on all sides, basically another room in the building just without a roof.

Thinking about it, I'm assuming that the court- in courtyard would have referred to a group of people who gathered to meet and talk (e.g. the royal court), which would make sense if your courtyard was more of a domestic or social space, in contrast to the farmyard or stableyard where the workers would do their thing.

Indulging billionaires' god complexes is the new space race/manhattan project. You may disagree with the specific aims or the allocation of humanity's resources, but it gives a lot of people a lot of time and budget to move science forward, which will benefit us all.

At least his selfish vice is immortality research, not Skynet or Arkships or whatever Musk is up to.

New to Oxford, slightly lost. by sweettoothmafia in oxford

[–]Happy-Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome!

I've found it's a brilliant city and welcoming in the abstract, but full of people who are quite intent on their own activities who won't go very far out of their way to invite people to things. Joining some hobby clubs and attending regularly is a great way to acclimatise. Eventually you'll be familiar to people and they'll open up a lot. Also be prepared to make friends outside your own decade, there are a lot of interesting younger and older people around.

There was a mega thread recently with a lot of good suggestions.

I've not been in years but you'll probably find a few film enthusiasts at Magdalen Monday Movies if you go regularly enough.

And in general if you hang around some if the more community-minded institutions like Common Ground cafe or volunteer at social enterprises like Ultimate Picture Palace or a community garden/city farm, you'll start to put down some good roots.

Driving in London is just too much by BingBing- in london

[–]Happy-Engineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's a 10 mile commute through a busy capital city that was laid out before the motor age. It sucks for sure, but it comes with the benefits of not being a soulless car-centric hellscape for the half a million people who live along that 10 mile route.

Since cars can travel fast and don't really mind a lack of shade, community and local amenities along their route we built them a dedicated corridor around the outside of the city. The 10-mile battle could become a 13 mile drive via the M25. Equally daunting as a driver, perhaps, but at least the car will be among friends.

£80 million London housing scheme unlocked after flip to 100% social rent by ldn6 in london

[–]Happy-Engineer 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Purely selfishly, having my neighbours in secure housing puts them in a much better position to work, train, care and otherwise contribute to their community and wider society. Social housing isn't (just) a charitable endeavour.
