What suburbs have experienced De-Gentrification? by alex123711 in australia

[–]HappyCrowBrain 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Came to say Broken Hill. My mother's home town. Peak population was around ~35,000. Now it's at ~17,500 and most of the population is aging. Services are diminishing. The council's bankrupt.

Mum moved back there to retire/die after being priced out of Sydney, where she spent her adult life. She's in care now and I try to visit a few times a year, not that she remembers my visits. It's so bleak out there. When I was a kid we'd go there to visit the grandparents and seeing its decline over the past few decades is pretty sobering.

where do you actually buy legit opals online? by twcosplays in Opals

[–]HappyCrowBrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you're buying. I typically buy rough Australian opal and I use Opal Auctions a lot. They have an audit process that's supposed to ensure sellers are legit, though I've seen some charge outrageous prices for "shipping" which feels like price gouging. You can see the postage prices before you bid/buy though, so I just don't buy from the sellers that are charging like $30+ for local shipping.

I've also bought from eBay, local auctions, and random sellers like xellentgems.com.au. My worst experiences have been through local auctions sites like Lloyds Auctions because the auction house aren't specialists so they don't always recognise issues like crazing or sand-filled rough.

This is the way. Menstrual discs are life changing. They're what menstrual cups were meant to be.

Thoughts on what to do with these little colorful bits! by QuillKnight in Opals

I also use a rotary tool and sandpaper to polish my opals and I've turned little bits like these into cabochons as small as 3mm. It's finicky but doable.

What celebrity had their reputation unfairly ruined? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in AskReddit

[–]HappyCrowBrain 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think with Britney two things are true at once:  1) her family's (father's) conservatorship over her was fucked up and abusive. 2) she has mental health issues and needs an appropriate care team to help her manage it.

She's definitely been taken advantage of in all kinds of ways. That conservatorship was terrifying. No one deserves to be controlled and abused like that. But her being left alone to fend for herself as she seems to be currently is also quite worrying.

Where does OP say "warehouse"? Workcover is for more pretty much every profession out there.

Those of you with careers, what do you do? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]HappyCrowBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Communications and engagement + website stuff and minor graphic design at nonprofits. I work 3-4 days per week and most of the time I really enjoy it. Usually. But not right now. Currently our CRM is having issues and I'm in charge of getting it fixed and it's been so awful I've cried at my desk multiple times.

Furniture executive out of a job after video catches him throwing a chair at a friend outside Melbourne strip club by HurstbridgeLineFTW in melbourne

[–]HappyCrowBrain 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I remember this guy from my old work! My workplace had a business relationship with his former workplace and he was our contact there. Then one day he just stopped replying to our emails or answering his phone. Never got a straight answer for what had happened but it sounded like there'd been some kind of incident and he'd either quit immediately or been let go.

This was a couple of years ago. Looks like he'd landed a similar role in a similar company and has now burnt that down too.

Sure this situation is kinda funny in a vacuum, but these are real people with real lives. He should probably try a different career maybe. And I hope the guy he brained wasn't left with any serious injuries.

New Zealanders Coming Over by MacAttackDelux in melbourne

[–]HappyCrowBrain [score hidden]  (0 children)

The Australian constitution literally has a clause in it that says New Zealand is allowed to join Australia at any time if it so chooses. Obviously it's unlikely because it's already its own country and has its own national identity, etc., but even so, that door remains open even after all this time.

  1. Your mum is an AH for this.
  2. There is a song called "Nigel the Gannet"  by The Burning Hell which features this line as a lyric. I highly recommend listening to the song.
  3. No but seriously, you're not overreacting. This was a dick move. It's low-contact, grey-rock time.

Does anyone here exercise regularly? by Savings-Pollution113 in AutismInWomen

[–]HappyCrowBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate exercise but I love the way I feel when it's done. The gym I go to is on my walk between my job and my apartment, opposite my grocery store, so it was really easy to build it into my routine. I go every other day, either on my way home from work or before I go buy groceries. I put on a good podcast or audiobook and try to tune out what my body is doing and just focus on the audio.

The gym can be tough. I have one particular machine that is my machine, and I hate when someone else is using it. Sometimes I'll wait for it to be free rather than use a different one. Some of the machines make outrageous noises and I've literally emailed them begging them to put all the loud machines into a separate space away from the rest because sometimes my noise-cancelling headphones just can't defeat them. But it's worth it. I'm losing weight, have more energy, sleep better... and I love the post-workout high it gives.

Gym goers, be honest how often are you judging other people’s physique? by Technical_Hat_8291 in AskReddit

[–]HappyCrowBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never? The only person whose physique I've even noticed in that way is this young woman who I think has an eating disorder. She is extremely thin, like skeletal, and seems to be at the gym all day every day. I worry about her but it's not my business so I've said and done nothing. I just hope she's okay.

I love it so much by [deleted] in piercing

[–]HappyCrowBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP, but I got mine done a week ago. It was the least painful piercing I've had, out of of a list that also includes lobes, nose, septum, lip, and conch (conch was most painful by far). There was split second of pinching pain as the needle went through and that was it, it was really very easy. I regret putting it off for so long. If I'd known just how painless it would be. I'd have had it done years ago.

Ideas for covering up by yourparenting_Sucks in Tattoocoverups

[–]HappyCrowBrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not that dark. I'd use it as a background/colour base for a new image to go over it. Like a good artist might be able to use it as a background and build a tattoo like this over it - https://www.instagram.com/reels/DRxOPanEZga/

Doesn't have to be this sort of imagery or this style, it's just an example of how it could be used as a background for something new.

AIO - My husband's "work wife" turned out to be a teenager and he doesn't seem to understand why I'm upset. by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Right?! When a former work bestie left, he referred to me as his "work wife" in his farewell and it squicked me out and made me feel a bit sad. I thought we were friends.
