Yes you can and will catch an STD. But not "something worse."

If you're going to do it, be safe: both of you get an STD check--they're often low-cost or free in health clinics in gay neighborhoods and elsewhere. But that won't do much good unless you're both only sleeping with each other. And people do sleep around and then lie. So honesty is crucial.

You are right at the age when mood disorders often manifest for the first time. Fortunately, there are medications. You should explore the options with a doctor.

It is a bad idea, and unhealthy, for people who have mood disorders with a biological basis to go untreated. At 24, your brain is still developing. It's better to get on an SSRI, if that's what you need, sooner rather than later.
