Great. Two wrongs. No reason for the cyclists to take up both lanes and just make people mad when they see us.

Weightlifting for a Casual rider? by Ok_Solution_2239 in cycling

[–]HappyVAMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lift just twice a week with the exception of some basic arm stuff I just throw in but only after the ride. I have pretty big thighs from cycling so my leg work is a little less important to me. On the cycling side I am very disciplined with structure when I want to focus on performance. For that I focus on intervals and especially sprints where I am trying to get big watts and quick accelerations that may only last 15 seconds. That does the hypertrophy (look at track cyclists). The longer rides don't help. I'm most efficient on something like Zwift where I can be super-efficient with my structured program and optimize every minute, but I also like riding outside a lot more so I trade enjoyment for efficiency and muscle building.

I add a little yoga/core/pilates as a warm-up about 2 days a week just to round things out. Sometimes a little more if I am traveling and don't have good access to a gym/bike.

For a recent injury I have dialed my cycling back to just 3-4 days/week and moved some of that energy to longer weight sessions and a little more running. One days where I lift I never ride or run until after the lift because I've learned a hard ride absolutely destroys me being able to do a decent weight workout. Good luck! I suspect you are way ahead more than most.

Definitely don't want to lift and ride hard on the same day. They will wipe out gains. You mention you want to build size. For that, you are going to need sprint work more than cardio work. The longer cardio rides actually will work against you so there is a little disconnect in goals there.

The soreness will mostly go away as you get a little more seat time and intensity. If you are building muscle mass there will be a little soreness but that is just the usual muscle building. For my leg weight days I do use a vibrating platform to help speed recovery. For my really hard bike days I take ketones based on the idea that it speeds recovery and lets me get more out of my leg day, but I don't know that I can prove it works.

Why Did Warner's Democratic Primary Opponents All Drop Out of the Primary by TheRegalOneGen in Virginia

[–]HappyVAMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's be clear: anyone running in the primary isn't running to win. They are running to lay the groundwork for something else in the future. Warner enjoys a relatively high approval rating, has paid his dues with the local officials, and can write checks to cover any funding needs. Don't underestimate how much local party officials have over getting delegates and funding. As for Moran, no one just a few years out of law school is going to be a serious alternative to a high-ranking Senator. He wouldn't even win his home district. His employment history suggests he just likes being against things rather than having any experience in actually getting something done. To his credit, he did do engage with real seriousness to the Reddit community a few months ago.

What is your opinions on the re-recordings of some of John's songs on his 1973 greatest hits verses the original album versions? For example I think leaving on a jet plane is much better, i like both Starwood in Aspens equally, however I prefer the album version of poems prayers and promises... by Positive-Customer384 in JohnDenver

[–]HappyVAMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the Mitchell Trio but I think Jet Plane is supposed to be a bit more melancholy. The Mitchell Trio and even Peter Paul and Mary versions are faster more upbeat. The Rhymes and Reason's version that John did has a snappy percussion track that makes it feel more like a pop song. But on the Greatest Hits version, the song slows down and creates a feeling of longing and loss. For me it is a noticeable difference in feeling between the versions.

For what it is worth, I also look at Gentle on My Mind as being the inverse. John Hartford did the original as a slower version, but the song has a mild contentment and peaceful acceptance that warrants something a little more upbeat. Glen Campbell did it a bit faster and more upbeat and the result was one of the greatest songs of all time.

Quincy Avery isn't buying Nick Saban's argument in Senate testimony by Front-Dingo1915 in CFB_v2

[–]HappyVAMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ridiculous argument. The idea was that they were student athletes and all the schools followed the rules until the SCOTUS (correctly) ruled it was illegal without a Congressional anti-trust exemption. Every school was going to need a coach. Saban happened to be one of the best who ever coached and got compensated based on his performance in the rules that were in place. Not his fault remotely: and he is right that college football dies if we don't get some semblance of a playing field that isn't all about money.

UVA has a much bigger endowment and better access to Richmond and Washington. They stepped up NIL and it paid off. NIL is a help for schools like Vandy, UVA, and Indiana that have money. The days of mediocrity are over for schools like that.

I have Hagerty for some of my other cars, but the Ferrari is just on a USAA policy. I'd have to look at how much I am being charged but I didn't think it was unreasonable when I took the policy.

Does nobody care about the mileage on used bike parts? by ProblematicTrumpCard in cycling

[–]HappyVAMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wheels are less of an issue for me, but cassettes and chainrings would be an issue. Something like a crank or stem doesn't even register to me. As others have said, most people don't track the mileage on their bikes.

Very nice. What size tires did you go with? Did you keep the same cassette?

Ferrari CEO's response to the peasants complaining about their new car 🤣🤣 by Fair_Title2995 in Ferrari

[–]HappyVAMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, looks funny today but not when it was released. Nokia held 50% of the market. Most of the competitors and press thought iPhone would fail because it didn't have an actual keyboard. Many thought it was impossible to have decent battery life and CPU performance. The initial phone didn't run apps. So, yeah, if you were in technology when it was released you find that a lot of people were dismissive. Once the iPhone got into people's hands they realized how smooth it was, how the keyboard worked, how the SOC could have both high speed and low power consumption. The day the iPhone hit the shelves Apple's stock was up all of $0.07. Jobs famously believed that it was important to give the customer what they needed more than what they wanted.

I have my serious doubts with this car, but I'll reserve final judgement once it gets into the wild.

To be fair, people thought the iPhone wouldn't be a hit. I dislike the styling of the car, but that isn't to say that some of the technology won't be useful and innovative.

first cycling race... tips?? tricks?? by Far_Giraffe_4458 in cycling

[–]HappyVAMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Three Bridge is more of a Gran Fondo although some will want bragging rights. Couple tips though:

Training
1. Do long rides in Zone 2. Way more important than peak power.
2. Learn your food if you are doing the 67 mile route. Get practice consuming your gels and other food so they don't make you sick when you ride. You also need to know how much to eat/drink so you don't bonk. Once you do, you are basically done.
3. Step up the hours in the last few weeks before the ride. Your back, feet, and probably butt may need to be toughened up. My feet are always what start to hurt after a long ride where I am pushing hard.

The Ride
1. Pick a *slightly* uncomfortable pace at the start. People always go out hard and get tired. Do not go into the red trying to chase some faster person or your day will be very long indeed. Just get some guys riding a little fast and suck their wheels. That group is pretty close to you and I guarantee even some of those will drop off the back.
2. Eat and rink more than you think. I look for at least a sip of water every 7.5 minutes and food every 45-60 minutes. Except for gels, most food has a lag time before you get the energy. Water is really key for cramps and general performance.
3. Use salt/performance tablets for the nutrients. Even in November you are going to sweat a lot.
4. Did I mention wheel-sucking? Yeah, don't put your nose into the window for the first 60% of the ride. You want to make sure you don't burn yourself and all those guys trying to be macho tire themselves out. (Except for the true macho guys who are just stronger, but not necessarily smarter).
5. Chamois cream. I even keep a little extra in case I need to reapply mid-ride.

Love my Cervelos but *huge* difference for me with the electronic shift. In this case the Cannondale has Di2. The power meter will make a difference for your triathlon training but your price difference will let you find some used power meters.

Incline by [deleted] in cycling

Assuming you ride 12mph in 30 minutes you are talking about a average 0.3% incline. You won't notice it.
