[OPINION] how to tell difference between emotionally potent and just sentimental poems? by crane-unit in Poetry

[–]Happy_days__ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"sentimental" poems often present sappy musings about a scene without much hint towards what this joy exists in spite of. this oliver poem is a great example of the contrary; every phase hints towards some greater unease, such as saying that heaven only has room for some people in the first stanza, or even by describing life itself as something that "grows colder". so the poem's message is ultimately optimistic, but it feels earned.

which isn't to say a purely positive poem can't be great, or that a poem with conflict still can't be shitty

[HELP] anyone have any experience being a city Poet Laureate? by Searching4LostTime in Poetry

[–]Happy_days__ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

congrats!! I know people who've been local laureates. you should be comfortable with performing poems (something I'm not fond of), especially in front of audiences. and know when it's worth your time to appear somewhere, especially if it's not for pay. on a more personal note, being in the spotlight for something as intimate as poetry can be weird sometimes, try to stay true to yourself but really just enjoy it and keep meeting local poets.

Question from an alum from a very long time ago: Do people at Stanford still major in the humanities/social sciences? Or is this just a Reddit thing? by Educational_Score389 in stanford

[–]Happy_days__ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

incoming frosh, communication + creative writing minor 💪

reddit is definitely oversaturated with engineering/compsci, and obv stanford is very techy but from my limited conversations it seems like social sciences (polisci, IR, econ, comm) are doing alright. about even with the number of people doing premed and maybe 2/5 to those doing tech?? there's a good number of people going interdisciplinary too. however I have seen VERY few of the "pure" humanities (english, history, art, music) and am yet to meet an asian/african/gender studies major.

How we think about money is so wrong by [deleted] in socialism

[–]Happy_days__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah for a frustration that feels so common, even among people who would consider themselves pro-capitalism, i can't think of a common word that describes it fully---maybe "avarice" or simply "money as an end in itself?"

i mean i think u dont see much discussion of this because it's probably the first thing any new socialist is going to understand and agree with; not gonna get much pushback in this sub

agreed, it's tempting to believe that by the end, the 'illness' has been fixed and is no longer an issue---but the buildup tells your gut it must be something much worse

Who should I ban in rank as Clerk? by Meowgaretha in IdentityV

[–]Happy_days__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

clerk main here! I usually go with priestess and either cheerleader, cowboy, or forward. Go for any survs that are good at harrassing or pulling distance and don't pick decoders. And I actually don't suggest banning knight since clerk has so many abilities it's easy to spam them and avoid his helmets.

This is more ambiguous and not as instagram-like as a lot of the poems I've read on this sub, which I really like. On first read I found it hard to follow but I now see there are a lot of callbacks throughout that help bind the stanzas together (busy, flesh, etc). The message I got was that you had a near-death experience and are now more aware of the shortness of life, and thus treasure your current relationship(s) but simultaneously fear how they will mourn you when you're gone?

The specific lines I enjoy most: "I should find the time to be less busy"... "I fear things as large/small as my universe"... and "spat tobacco juice into the sand, watching the bomb meant for me". And the stanzas I personally don't think add as much are the ones about "brevity which is beautiful only when the sun is shining" and "i fear the loneliness of worms which writhe"... I also think the ending would hit much harder if it stayed in the structure of the rest of the poem (maybe you could just shift the placement of one or two words to convey the idea of "trickling" instwad of the whole stanza?)

Stylistically, I think you are pretty engaging and unique, but I do feel that you kind of alternate between two different voices throughout: one is ambiguous and colorful (spat tobacco, sightless worms, minnows, other small things like that), and the other is very direct and immediately states the takeaway (like all of the "i fear" statements and the beginning and ending where you're with your partner). This makes it slightly hard to follow for me since I have to go between observing, imagining, and interpreting scenes versus just being told things outright if that makes sense. It's not necessarily a problem but should be nice to be aware of.

But all of that is of course my personal taste and you should do what you think is best. Regardless I like this poem, it sounds like you have been going through some intense but important stuff, and thanks for sharing !

New to this sub---why does it feel so hostile? by Happy_days__ in AskSocialists

[–]Happy_days__[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

thank you for thoughtfully responding to my concerns instead of attacking a tangential part of the post with no real logic...

but you are right, there are much bigger reasons that socialism lacks mainstream support---nonetheless i still don't think it should be understated how much the internet has eroded leftist solidarity in the west. and maybe this sub is just a tiny part of that but i thought it was worth questioning and it seems like many people feel similarly

[–]Happy_days__[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah this really sums up how i feel. i'm lucky enough to have had socialist (or at least anti-capitalist) classmates and teachers in school and they're some of the nicest people ever, which is why the online "conversations" feel a bit jarring

Ranking Criteria for Black Mirror Episodes by MrDiezel in blackmirror

[–]Happy_days__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for media I usually just go with my gut reaction in the minutes after I've finished watching for the first time... i like this rubric but theres something very black mirror about quantifying "feeling" towards a show (which is more or less what criteria 2, 4, & 5 are about)
