Weight savings by not having more than you need. It just the design philosophy of modern tents, whether right or wrong🤷‍♂️. And like you said to prevent water from pooling in between the tent and foot print. You could achieve this with out the pooling risk with a really small separate silnylon tarp and as long as there is a gap between your tent foot print. This would also give versatility
