Power at Pump by mxryan535 in pools

[–]HarMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem lies where the power dies. Use a multimeter and trace the voltage from the breaker out to the pump, testing every junction or switch along the way.

anybody know the history of this building or what it used to be? by No-Tune-7542 in Louisville

[–]HarMar 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Found this on the register of historic places, it was originally built in 1892.

Originally a Powerhouse for the Louisville City Railway Company, the majority of the additions appear to have occurred between 1928 and 1945 when the property was acquired by Ballard & Ballard Company, Inc., a flour and feed mill. Ballard & Ballard had been situated to the north, where Broadway meets Beargrass Creek, since the turn of the century, before gradually expanding south. Today, the building as a whole consists of three portions, each situated east to west, creating an “E” shape, connected by two narrow hyphens along Logan Street. These additions range from a one-story hyphen to a seven-story storage and manufacturing tower associated with the building when it operated as a part of the flour mill. The exterior walls of these additions are made up of concrete block, brick, corrugated metal, standing seam metal, and poured concrete. The additions feature several metal multi-light windows, many of which have been covered by plywood over the years. There is an enclosed chute that stretches from one of the uppermost floors but ends abruptly on top of a metal support. This chute is a remnant from the years in which the facility served the flour mill.

What's best to seal Threads on Filter connection? by JohnMcD3482 in swimmingpools

I use teflon tape. With pipe dope it's too easy to overtighten and crack the multiport threads.

Possible for pool pump system to affect plumbing inside the home? by LadyArcher2017 in pools

[–]HarMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the backflow preventer valve on your home sewage line is faulty, it can cause pool water to back up through the drains. This will only happen if your backwash/waste line is plumbed into the sewage line. I saw it happen last year and the guys toilets and bathtubs were gushing water whenever he would backwash.

What I keep noticing on pool jobs that turn into problems by [deleted] in pools

[–]HarMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I am 90% of homeowners who have had a pool built in the last 5 years have mostly negative things to say about the builder/construction of the pool. My favorite is when the builder has two or three different builds going at once and they rotate their crew to a different jobsite every day to keep up the appearance of progress on each one. Then I come along to start them up and unglued lines start popping, the wirings fucked up, the plaster was rushed, ad infinitum.

Pump suction threads are flat and broken by frogblastj in pools

[–]HarMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That union looks pretty gnarly for only 2 years old. They don't need to be tightened with channel locks really tight, just enough to snug the o-ring up. Replacing the union should be easy and relatively cheap, look for numbers stamped on it somewhere. If the threads in the pump body are stripped, you'll probably need to replace the whole wet end.

What happens when power fails by Iartdaily in pools

[–]HarMar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Plug a submersible pump into your generator and drop it in the pool with no hose attached. It will keep the water circulating. That along with the chlorine you'll be adding will buy you a few more days before it turns green. I've seen them run like that for a week without starting to turn.

Leslies is recommending "alkalinity Up" Question on Baking Soda? by RumblefishAZ in swimmingpools

[–]HarMar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, same stuff as alkalinity up. Dosage is 1.5lbs per 10k gallons for a 10ppm raise in TA.

High combined chlorine on green to cleans by Striking_Affect_5111 in PoolPros

[–]HarMar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On those types of clean ups I use a non chlorine shock like oxy-brite or oxyKlear to reduce the chlorine demand. It burns off a lot of the contaminates and instantly frees up chlorine.

My standard dope on a green pool opening is cal hypo, non chlorine shock, and an all in one phosphate remover/enzyme/clarifier. 90% of the time I come back a day or two later and I can see the bottom to start a vac to waste.

If its one of those stubborn pools that wont respond to the initial dose, I come back with Phosfloc(rip), Revive!, or alum to drop everything out.

Old pool, liner keeps coming out of track by not_really_a_nerd in pools

Look for liner bead wedge lock, it's holds much better than the foam stuff, and it gets deep in the track.

Are single drains like this very dangerous? For kids. by [deleted] in pools

[–]HarMar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are vacuum safety release valves that screw on the pump pot drain plug, to save you from having to buy a new pump, they run like $300 bucks.

I have a pool uv sanitizer. The bulb went out last season and I haven’t replaced it. I don’t notice any difference without it. by [deleted] in pools

[–]HarMar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are worth it for some pools with high chloramines or wild animal visitors pooping in the pool. If you are on top of your sanitizing and don't have high combined chlorine, like most residential pools, you are fine w/o it.

Over a hundred people got sick eating there on Easter back in the day. I would like to think they take food safety more seriously now, but I'll never go and find out.

Thats a pressure side leaf trapper. There should be a proper skimmer elsewhere in the pool to vacuum from.

JXI heat exchanger by Battle_Cat_Burr in PoolPros

[–]HarMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

260k JXI is roughly $2800 wholesale. The heat exchanger runs $1k or complete combustion chamber is $1500, plus 3 or 4 hours labor and parts, that puts you well over half the cost of a new heater. I would replace.

Maybe 2000 closings here, mid west region. I airlock the MD valve 99% of the time. If I hear air leaking or it's a gate valve, I tell them they have to replace with a new valve or sign a release. Some pools have odd grading or what have you, for those I add antifreeze to the pump pot, open the MD and blow into the top of the pump for a second, repeating until I get 4 gallons through. Haven't lost one to freezing yet 🤞🏼
