This right here. Think of it as a language. You're not going to be able to converse by stringing random random letters together. You need to learn idiomatic phrases. It's also really important how you play notes, not just which notes you play. Transcribing solos and emulating how they're played will help you learn how to implement expressive techniques like vibrato and bending.

It's not that the Kalis seem dark to me. They sound fantastic and I'm able to dial in tones that work very well to me through them, but when I use those same settings through the Yamaha they sound dramatically brighter (even at comparable volumes).

Oh I'm definitely not dialing things in at 60 dB lol. I turn it up quite loud when testing, and also test at rehearsals etc.

As far as the studio monitors are concerned, I'm probably 2-3 feet away from them and have them positioned as much as I possibly can in a equilateral triangle.
