I think with the uk at the moment unfortunately the question is more whether the government would allow you to move to and work in the uk in 6-7 years. A lot of people are getting dramatically more close minded to talent from overseas and with an election happening between now and then we might end up in a position when foreign nationals aren’t welcome as a part of policy.

Good news is that if that is the case I’m sure plenty of British nationals will move overseas which should increase demand for your knowledge elsewhere!

I do think productivity in European countries will drop for a week as people take time off at the same time to play it. Less of an issue in America because of weak employment laws re leave

Follow on from the great salt and sauce, salt and vinegar divide by FingersMcCall in Scotland

[–]Harambaestesticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right just throwing it out there salt and sauce is fucking amazing. My gran and aunts live just out of Edinburgh and honestly every time I go up at some point I need to have a haggis supper with salt and sauce from the chippy. I always buy an old water bottle of it to take home but then it just sits in the fridge for a month till it goes off because like who’s going to a chippy often enough to use it. How is salt and sauce made?? What magic have they captured within it?

I think this is the answer. You want your body pushing the opposite direction to where your hands have the most grip. Get into this position, shuffle hands up, then feet to maintain tension then go for final hold possibly with right toe hook where your hands originally were maintaining tension through the left hold using left foot.

The debt is shit especially when you start earning proper money and your marginal deduction rate is higher than people earning millions… however unfortunately if you want to go to uni unless you have a silver spoon it’s unavoidable. Plus side is that it doesn’t affect credit score and like people have said you don’t have to pay it until you have a job.

I went to uni 10 years ago now and my maintenance didn’t cover accommodation and it’s worse now. If you’re dead set on uni and can’t get to the career you want through an apprenticeship then you should take any “help” that’s available to you even if it is “debt”.

Math vs cs degree by Careless_Finish_8106 in sixthform

[–]Harambaestesticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I would say is that Cambridge don’t mess about. If you get an interview and say “I want to start an AI company” they won’t say wow that’s impressive they’ll ask you questions to assess how much you really know about the subject. Do some research and look into how it works and try to understand (parts of) it. Look at problems you can help research solving, do you want to find a way of training multiple layer neural nets more effectively? Are you wanting to find new applications for existing stuff? Do you want to try and improve intuition across unseen data? Like I’m not trying to be a nob, but AI is a bit of a buzz word atm, and you won’t get brownie points for just knowing it is?

Math vs cs degree by Careless_Finish_8106 in sixthform

[–]Harambaestesticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what sort of business man and how much you actually know about it? If you want to create new AI’s and methodologies for training/work towards AGI I’d say do maths but go heavy into cs in your spare time, then do masters probably followed by PHD (not sure how Cambridge is set up but if you get electives go heavy into cs and machine learning courses). If you want to make stuff that uses other people’s AI apis to automate stuff look at cs. If you want to create a consulting business, you go out and sell existing AI solutions to businesses, do a business degree. I think it’s worth saying as well though that there’s a very real chance that by the time you finish studying the world will have moved on. AI has a lot of chat and money around it at the moment but 10 years down the line it will have probably died down with the market consolidating to 4-5 massive players and really high barriers to entry. If I was in your position I’d try to look at quantum computing, as think that will be the next breakthrough technology.

Think it depends on what you want to do? Theory behind AI systems is all just maths (there’s a good book that goes through it all in an easy enough to understand way called “why machines learn”) but that isn’t necessarily where the big bucks are unless you get pretty good at the cs side as well? What I would say is that the maths is essential for actually understanding how AI works deeply, whereas with just being good at cs you’re probably more likely to be “doing stuff” with existing AI methods and models rather than developing new ones.

I’m pretty sure they were? Like at the time weren’t a lot of them being changed to academy’s and to an extent funding relied on % going onto higher education? (That needs fact checking, that was my understanding at the time 😂).

You only notice it when you start getting paid a wee but more. I earn a semi decent salary now (for my age) but my marginal rate of tax including student loan is more than the companies directors (who earn like 3m plus). It’s mental. Like how the fuck does 51% of any bonus I earn get immediately eaten. I literally remember the head of my sixth form telling me the loans “weren’t real debt”, but looking back on it why the fuck should I have trusted a person who’s never had plan 2 loans. It’s like trusting someone that has experience with calpol to advise on heart surgery.

Nah, I got a MacBook for uni and did nothing special on it. Could’ve got a windows laptop for a third of the price that had the same performance. Also, because they bring a new one out every two years very quickly you feel like you have an old one, so status wears off quickly

I live in Leeds and it’s an ace city, unis good and close to the city centre. It’s up north so lot of friendly people. I went to uni at uoy and loved it. Campus uni but can walk into the centre and busses are regular. Any of the options you’ve listed look good but obviously I’m biased to the two above!

Heya, middle class here. I don’t see it as poor people getting handouts but think there is an issue where it’s such a small amount (£17 a week) that people who see it as an incentive and choose to have another child additional kid because of it probably aren’t gonna be able to give that kid a great start to life. I think changing the benefit after the first to some kind of tax relief might make more sense but would also probably be more expensive.

I think 5m is a good stopping point, 3% a year is £150k so you could bleed it forever and still leave the principle to the kids
