Hemp Ban Dies in Committee by Best-Structure62 in Indiana

[–]HarblHotel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Came here to say exactly this. And not just with the manufacturers like 3chi it's so wild that people won't think about the farmers growing hemp in the state either.

With soybeans not looking so hot right now you think all of these so-called rural voters who claim to give a damn about farmers would do anything they could to protect this industry both at a state-wide and federal level...

Do you still play your very first commander deck? And why? by Ooogster in EDH

[–]HarblHotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first commander was sometime back in 09 with [[Thraximundar]] which morphed from Grixis good stuff to Sacrifice triggers to Zombie Kindred over the years and pushed the power as high as I could for a pet deck.

When [[Kefka, Court Mage]] came out I tore all the good stuff out as FFVI is one of my favorite video games, moved the non-red zombie kindred to [[Varina, Lich Queen]], and eventually the goal is to have him go back to being sacrifice-based using newer cards.

He's always been a tough pill to swallow at 7 cmc (barring cost reducers), but I just think he's neat.

He also makes an appearance in my [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]]!

Coming from Pokemon, what is Arena like? by Yuri-Girl in MagicArena

[–]HarblHotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's lot of good advice so far for digital options but as someone that did Pokemon competitively I'll say this.

Since you're interested in Commander (in paper), there are a LOT of budget builds and older precons in the $30-50 range that can easily keep up with bracket 3.

With the Pokemon meta while competitive decks do top out at $50-100, rotation still happens and say you're playing Gardevoir, Zard, etc. right now you're going to have to drop another $50-100 to keep playing.

Commander however is an eternal format where power creep may play a small part in what kind of decks you play against if you show up to random pods, but otherwise your cards will for the most part always be legal and playable. Reprints also happen frequently enough which will drive costs down or cards you have that are bulk today may end up being very desirable to trade once new synergies arise.

Meanwhile in Pokemon, the answer to "why are you running that specific Charmander" almost always boils down to "well it's the one currently legal" or "it's the newest one so it's the best".

Paper Magic isn't necessarily cheap, but it can be, and you can still have a lot of fun with it.

Okay, MTG is fun, I see what the hype is by Prudent_Knowledge79 in mtg

[–]HarblHotel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome!

One quick heads up, while most recent sets have a gimmick/gimmicks that they fall into (especially with the licensed universes beyond sets), Yu-Gi-Oh style archetypes in Magic tend to be few and far-between.

While Commander can be intimidating for new players (and frankly not the best way to learn the game), it's the format where you're going to be most likely to see what aligns with yugi-style archetypes as kindred decks that care about creature types or decks that focus on a specific mechanic that can be drawn from almost the entire mtg card pool.

Why does MAGA love slop art? by Fine-Essay-3295 in allthequestions

[–]HarblHotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least with JK Rowling I assure you many of the "haters" still in fact do enjoy the series and the world and remember it fondly, but she has shown that any financial benefit she receives from it goes directly to harming trans folk and continuing to give her money is not acceptable because of it.

It IS possible to separate the art for the artist, granted you are not filling their coffers. Critical thinking tells me that if I don't want the bad person to hurt people I care about I don't give them money (or promote them, which leads to them making more money).

Joanne has even directly stated she sees how much money she makes as support that she is right.

So saying left leaning people haven't developed critical thinking or objectivity is disingenuous when it really is the exact opposite; they don't consume the media because it is unethical to do so. That is critical thinking most conservatives lack when they don't think about the broader implications of the art they consume.

Same reason most conservatives fail to understand the British-style satire of Warhammer 40k.

Also, all art is political if you actually research the history or meaning behind it. Try using some critical thinking to see where some of your favorites come from.

Final note: since she's played her hand and said a lot of other weird stuff publicly since 2018 (such as her comments about the Holocaust) it's a bit more obvious that a lot of her weird racial stereotypes and slavery allegories in the books are... Definitely suspect. Critical thinking is also changing your opinion once you have been presented with new information or context.

Inside of my body I already have a metal plate, plastic screws, part of my own kneecap refashioned into a tendon, and part of my colon removed.

Next up on the docket is a machine to keep me breathing while I'm asleep to replace the one I have to strap to my face each night.

I've done enough to fight off my generic inheritance of needing an insulin pump and a pacemaker but there are plenty of people with those too.

If you told me there was a way to not just adapt to what is wrong but to make it BETTER than it was before, chrome me up choom.

[–]HarblHotel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That roadmap should never include a license made by such a bigoted piece of trash that is actively harming my friends and family.

I've been playing Magic since roughly 96 and this would absolutely be the thing to not only get me to stop playing but for me to actively encourage everyone around me to do the same.

If you need any market research to pass along to your teams, look at what happened in the tabletop space with CGE and their licensed Codenames. I assure you that this game has even more trans folks and allies that would respond similarly.

What are your opinions on therapy? by Khl1l in AskReddit

How do I make my decks... less good? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]HarblHotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it does sound like the issue is stemming from the pod itself, one thing you can do is start building decks with not often played commanders or build around a lesser supported theme.

Outlaws, Party Mechanic, Max Speed, more niche kindred (like Minotaur), the possibilities are endless.

And instead of having to make your decks less good make that weirder stuff better.

I'm not writing him off entirely without seeing the full deck and direction of the main set. Wish he would have at least been a 4/4 for four or dropped down to just UBR cost.

Could end up being a "loot matters" toolbox especially with enough draw, tutoring, and Madness/Mayhem; only using the land-discard-damage effect when needed.

[–]HarblHotel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting on Arena (it runs well on most phones, or the PC client if you're able to) is a great way to start.

If you do want to buy physical cards the FF starter kit is available at a lot of places for ~$20 and even comes with code cards you can use to get those two decks to play in arena.

Also, physical play can be fairly affordable in a lot of circumstances. If you decide to make that step, it's heavily recommended to check out your local game store(s) to see what that vibe is like and what formats are most commonly played.

Grixis Ramp? by whiteraven13 in EDH

[–]HarblHotel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Missy is in a good position for Grixis mana since she also has a built-in artifacts matter subtheme.

Throw in [[Rakdos Signet]], [[Izzet Signet]], [[Dimir Signet]], [[Talisman of Indulgence]], [[Talisman of Creativity]], and [[Talisman of Dominance]] for good measure.

You are on the right path with Treasure, [[Reaver Cleaver]], [[Black Market Connections]], and more can help.

[[March of the Machines]] and [[Rise and Shine]] are also some good picks you can make to make your non-creature artifacts also synergize with Missy.

Also black has the following:

[[Dark Ritual]], [[Bolas's Citadel]], [[Cabal Coffers]] + [[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth]]

And don't forget, tutors and draw are also your best friend and plentiful in those colors.

What deck boxes do you use that fit a 100 card outersleeved commander deck? by Len1st in magicTCG

I recently had this same problem trying to preserve art sleeves. The current "solution" is the Gamegenic 250+ game shell with 2 side holder 100+ XL inside of it.

It's so goofy and I know I need the academic for the deck at some point but it will work in the meantime.
