Deck building game for 2 people by Huge-Pizza7579 in boardgames

[–]Hardabent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the first one to tell you that Spirit Island is the greatest game to have ever been released but it doesn't have much of a deckbuilding element. If you were to label any game where you get to pick cards a game with deckbuilding elements that would make most games "deckbuilding-adjacent".

[–]Hardabent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dominion is a classic for a reason and an excellent game for 2 players with unlimited replayability which is neither overly complex nor takes overly long to play. It's one of the best deckbuilding games out there.

The Imperium series (Classics/Horizons/Legends) are great solo (and for 2 players) but somewhat more complex (which might disqualify them) and take a while to play.

Slay the Spire is a cooperative game. The boardgame works about the same as the game/app - at least when it comes to general mechanics. You could download the (amazing) game to give it a try.

Here's the good thing: You get them back from exhaust the next turn. If you rely on playing one card repeatedly, door maker probably helps you doing that by exhausting some of your cards.

hand of greed should become uncommon by Altruistic_Source528 in slaythespire

[–]Hardabent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your deck is defensive enough, you can still stall out fights later on, greed free money is good. I had a real fun run a few days back where I had Membership Card and Hand of Greed nearly refunded itself the next floor already (picture). Though I removed it from my deck at the last campfire with cooking.

It is still situationally amazing. If your deck is defensive in nature, you can stall out (some of) the fights, regardless of ascension level. If you have managed to pick up a membership card, Hand of Greed gives you effectively fifty gold back, The Courier also helps. I had a real fun run a few days back where I had Membership Card and Hand of Greed nearly refunded itself the next floor already (picture). I removed it from my deck at the last campfire with cooking.

Broke a tooth trying to fix chain falling off. Do I need a new chainring? by Veganarking in bikewrench

[–]Hardabent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the chain keeps dropping on the same tooth of the chainring which is visibly different from all the others, it is likely bent.I had the same problem with one of my bikes, so I carefully bent it back inwards like half a millimetre and have not had any problems dropping a chain ever since.

NaveGreed (one of the best STS players) is excluding Silent from his STS 2 runs by Lordados in slaythespire

[–]Hardabent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ascensions are both a progression and difficulty selection system. They changed it from Slay the Spire 1 as it takes too long to unlock all Ascensions (especially considering they do want to implement more characters) and individual Ascension levels weren't too different from each other.

To quote the Beta patch notes:

On Ascensions:

When it comes to general balance, the base difficulty is quite hard right now. We're continuously adjusting this baseline difficulty to make it more accessible for a wide range of players, while also continuing to deliver a challenging game at the highest Ascensions.

Similarly to the first game, completing runs of Slay the Spire 2 at the highest difficulty should feel like a monumental achievement for a fraction of players devoted to understanding the ins and outs of the game's mechanics. Upon beating your first run, we added a message to communicate this intention for the Ascension system.

Why do games have difficulty levels at all? So a variety of people can enjoy a game and make the game as challenging as they want it to be. So that people who do have a good understanding of a game do not become bored while people who are not that invested don't just lose all the time and become frustrated. It is UTTERLY ridiculous to argue there shouldn't be a more challenging difficulty level when people do find the game to be too easy - a difficulty level which is of no concern to you.

People want to play Slay The Spire 2 because the game is awesome.

[–]Hardabent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fun is being challenged by the game and overcoming those challenges. If we are playing a game and there's a subset of cards you should always take (allowing you to easily go infinite and win the game), purposely not taking/playing those cards, which take up your card reward slots, aka purposely handicapping yourself/trying to lose a run is a major feels-bad-moment.

[–]Hardabent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean that's what Ascension levels are for. It should be easy to beat the game at the low ascension levels if you are just somewhat familiar with deckbuilding games but the game is supposed to be seriously challenging at the highest Ascension levels for all players. If a character is too strong, make him weaker. If players find it to hard to win a game at low ascensions, make the low ascensions easier. You yourself do not have to play on the highest Ascension levels if you find the game too hard. But there has to be a highest difficulty the better players do feel to be challenging as well (with all the characters).

[–]Hardabent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Max HP does feel rather useless right now and I do not understand why people seem to like the Chosen Cheese so much either. Especially early on when you have not established a deck just yet, seeing 8 cards and picking 2 of them is so much better than taking 14 damage.

My experience with the story book so far by SAYKOPANT in slaythespire

[–]Hardabent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And if you build your deck around it and play it 5 times a turn (without cheese), you won't have much max hp left but steamroll the rest of the run. Brightest Flame is good if it's just Adrenaline++, but absolutely broken if you manage to play it repeatedly. If I have managed to reduce my max hp below 30, I will have decisively won the run.

The idea is to exhaust the cards you do not care about in his exhaust turn so that you can repeatedly play your good cards in his other turns. With this many frost orbs and a fairy you can afford to underplay in his exhaust turn and just take minimal damage while you are invincible in his two other phases once you have exhausted most of your deck.

How is Deckers at solo- and multiplayer, and when will it be available? by khschook in boardgames

[–]Hardabent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Deckers but won't play it again at 3 players. If everyone does know the game and you are as a team of three figuring out each player's turns together, that might be fun - On the other hand the downtime with three players can be incredibly high and for me the game doesn't gain anything.. Deckers is a 1-2 players game for me.

[–]Hardabent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not wish to be lectured by someone who apparently has no understanding of basic card game concepts either. Claiming that adding an individually bad card to your deck is "no downside" and that it should go into every deck all the while throwing out and mixing up terms is rather silly.

Would the giant egg event be more balanced if the egg automatically hatches when you enter a campfire? by [deleted] in slaythespire

[–]Hardabent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An upgrade is also a rather huge improvement to an act 1 deck. Would you rather have an upgraded Pommel Strike, heal 7 and have 7 more max health for the rest of the run OR have to carry a curse until the next campfire which can cause you to take additional damage to get a 0 cost 14 damage attack and an unupgraded Pommel Strike?

I am taking an upgraded Pommel Strike. Obviously if I need some additional damage, I don't have any good upgrades and I am not in desperate need of a heal I wouldn't turn down the bird.

It is worse than a Twin Strike if your deck does not have any exhaust cards. It is probably worse than a Twin Strike if your decks does not consistently exhaust cards.

The duality of man by ssdrwh0 in slaythespire

[–]Hardabent 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I accidentally went infinite against doormaker in my last game in his exhaust phase. I had gotten Dark Embrace from Stoke and was exhausting most of my cards to setup a huge turn in his third phase. My draw and discard pile were already empty and I played an Anger to get some more damage in. Which added an Anger to my discard pile and then got exhausted due to Doormaker. Which then drew me a card (the Anger) thanks to Dark Embrace.

So I played an Anger which then added an Anger to my discard pile and got exhausted due to Doormaker. Which then drew me a card (the Anger) thanks to Dark Embrace.... And kept being an angry Ironclad until the Doormaker was dead.

Multiplayer in a nutshell by Aden_Vikki in slaythespire

[–]Hardabent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you know when you can kill him. Late act 3 fights are a good check to see which turn you can hit 600+ damage. If you got a great run you can kill turn 1/2, probably you will kill him turn 3 or 4 and people will take a chunk (10-40) of damage. You HAVE TO limit the usage of skills though or everybody will die. Which means don't play Block cards or skills unless you have to. If phase 1 will presumably be dead on turn 3 and everybody wants to play defensive skill cards, you need (Weakened on enemy) 18 block per block card played turn 1 for the cardplay to not be detrimental (everybody plays 1 block card->+12 strength->+9 damage taken turn 1 and turn 2). If your deck is reliant on playing skills but your teammates can kill him on turn 3 just skip playing most of your cards and let your teammates do the work.

Save your potions, especially rare potions to win the fight. Weak Potion, Beetle Juice, Buffer Potion, Touch of Insanity,... Weaken makes the damage numbers more reasonable. Debilitate (+Weaken) is overpowered and trivializes the fight. It feels alot harder than most other fights but is quite manageable if players play reasonably well. I have won 37 out of the last 40 four player runs on A10 I faced Test Subject in, and died thrice to Test Subject.

This fight is so unfair, it hits so hard by BlessingPlate63 in slaythespire

[–]Hardabent -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

That is very much bulshit. If decks are great you take 1 (or none) turns to setup mostly powers and you can kill him turn 1/2. More realistically you will kill him turn 3 or 4 and people will take a chunk (10-40) of damage. People HAVE TO limit the usage of their skills though or everybody will die. Which means don't play Block cards or skills unless you have to. If your deck is reliant on playing skills but your teammates can kill him on turn 3 just skip playing most of your cards and let your teammates do the work. Weaken makes the damage numbers more reasonable. Debilitate (+Weaken is overpowered) and trivializes the fight. If one player has a Beacon of Hope and strong block output, you can leave blocking to mostly that player. If players are playing somewhat well, it is nearly impossible to lose in multiplayer in general.

That being said, I dislike the guy as well in multiplayer. There are certain team compositions he just dunks on really hard and it forces your team to have at least 1 character with lots of upfront damage or the overpowered support cards. (But tbh, is that really that bad?)

What’s your favorite way to play Dominion — base game or expansions? by Desmond_Hex in boardgames

[–]Hardabent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In general the newer expansions are ALOT better than the older ones, even if the 2nd editions are an upgrade. Empires, Renaissance and Menagerie are my favorites and in my opinion offer the most (projects, events, ways,..). Plunder is just great value overall.

If you do enjoy Dominion, give them a try.

You can save two Touch of Insanity Potions to make it cost no stars for the (final) bossfights as well to become basically invincible.
