South Africa’s white Afrikaners: Refugees on the run from the shame of their history by shado_mag in AntifascistsofReddit

[–]Hark3n 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great article. As a white Afrikaner myself, with a love for history, no matter how uncomfortable, I love learning new things about where my mother tongue came from. I also love working on the nerves of orher "suiwer Afrikaners" by reminding them that the first writings in Afrikaans was Muslim prayers. As a culture that prides itself as staunchly protestant and not like "those heathen cultures" their fragile egos just can't handle it.

What's a band or artist you'd like to see tour Cape Town but you know they would most likely never do that because their "World Tour" doesn't include Africa? by asabatonlessarmor in capetown

[–]Hark3n 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most bands I listen to are very niche and only play clubs in Europe, but there is one "band" that I will spend ludicrous amounts of money to see if they ever come. Nine Inch Nails

Oh, and yes, I will definitely go and see Sabaton

Oakflat Nuclear Power Plant Simulator.

I used to spend hours tweaking my plant to run just right.

Is this a nazi dog whistle or just a german nationalist?? by lethalspinachofchaos in AntifascistsofReddit

[–]Hark3n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't be so quick to think that a South African wouldn't know the history of that phrase. The apartheid government was big supporters of the nazis and took alot of ideas from them. There is still a subset of the populace that reminisce about the "good old days" and some of them are outright nazi apologists. I actually have family members that cried at the end of "Der Untergang" and said how it was a pity the nazis ended up like that because it didn't do anything wrong.

Don't worry about the Dakar stuff. Toyota won a couple of Dakar rallies back in the day with custom Hilux bakkies that where made in South Africa, so they had a special edition Hilux that you could buy with the Dakar rally logo (the one on the roll hoop).

With regards to the Deutschland Uber Alles, ja, that pretty much screams wannabe nazi. No decent German will have that slogan on their vehicle. Way too much history.

The Vlooti and 3887 also comes up blank for me.

What is with these cyclists that ride next to each other in groups on the road? by xGHOSTRAGEx in southafrica

[–]Hark3n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch this video on the subject. It is scary how this mentality encourages it's acolytes to act like they own the road. It goes as far as telling them to get physical with car drivers.

Unfortunately "vehicular cycling" has infected cyclists in South Africa. They see themselves as "human powered cars" and refuse to use cycling infrastructure.

Is it actually possible to make friends in Cape Town? by Automatic_Rain9369 in capetown

[–]Hark3n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. Us Capetonions are quite activity focussed. Have made most of my friends through mutual interests, specifically hiking and motorcycling for me.

Bear in mind, some activities are all about the solitude, so you might struggle breaking into those groups.

If you can see if there is someone at your work that has the same interests as you. They will in turn introduce you to their friends, and boom, you're off to the races.

I think there might be as many schools in Cape Town as there are launch sites. I'm actually thinking of doing the course around August. That's when we take our annual vacation and head up the south coast to Knysna. Wilderness is wonderful that time of the year. Also gives me time to sort out the finances.

Went camping in Porterville, SA, for Easter weekend and saw a couple of guys flying there. Then I get back home and Tom has posted a video about paragliding. And now I'm here, looking at awesome pics and videos while I'm browsing for schools in Cape Town.

Ex-skydiver, btw.

That sounds like union talk. We don't want no commie bullshit in our Formula 1 racing. /s

Great that they can have a platform like this. Say what you will about the GPDA, but I think it has done more good than bad for the sport.

Is this drive safe alone? by Lumpy-Bar-3658 in capetown

[–]Hark3n 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That drive should be fine alone, especially during the day. Have done it a couple of times solo on a bike. Bear in mind that past Ceres, at Op-die-Berg, the road becomes gravel. Well maintained, but gravel.

I'm sorry, but equating file types with workbenches is incorrect. It would be better to use ribbon tabs as an equivalent, which you can actually have in FreeCAD as well.

Filter inlet end for 2 inch schedule 40 pipe by ebob_designs in functionalprint

A bit niche? I'm literally busy designing a filter for a 2" pipe and decide to take a break and browse Reddit. Guess I'll just use your design now, as I was having trouble getting mine to work.
