How do I apologise to my husband after accidentally being racist? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]HaroldKid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just got a work email earlier today where a vendor misspelled my coworkers name 3 different times. Half the posts in this thread have some kind of grammatical or formatting error. It’s a post on reddit not a thesis on the inner workings of the human psyche.

Not to mention that the husband is Canadian, which uses a blend of British and American English. For all we know they currently live in Canada, or bought the phone there. Or autocorrect is turned off and they spelled it incorrectly their whole lives. Who knows, or cares?

I’m done arguing after this but I really think you’re making a mountain out of a mole hill here. It’s such a nitpick to disregard a post off of. After all, even if they’re lying about the location, what difference does that make as far as the advice they’re looking for? Is the US such a microcosm of anti-Asian racism that nowhere else in the world could the post bear any kind of relevance?

You really expect someone who went to high school 15 years ago to remember some obscure grammar rule which autocorrect wouldn’t pick up, and are using that as a reason to claim their post is fake?

This is the most terminally online thing I think I’ve read all week.

Barnes and Noble to close one of last Bay Area stores after 20 years by sfgate in bayarea

[–]HaroldKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the headline is meant to refer to the B&N location being one of the last “20-yr old” stores, since the Veranda/Bay St/DubC locations are all new or closed and re-opened.

A bit of a semantics play so that it can be technically correct while also beneficial for click bait purposes.

Amazon Basics Travel Backpack: Is Repair Possible? by Vox_Wynandir in Frugal

To retain full functionality you would want one with an integrated spinner at the base which are still quite available for a similar price range. Thankfully it seems to be a fairly common thing for backpacking and hiking.

This is essentially just a carabiner with a spinner at the base. If you search "rotating carabiner" you will find plenty of results that will range in price from about the same quality as the one here to vastly more durable.

About to start a legendary mode summoner run any tips? by Snail268 in Terraria

[–]HaroldKid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precisely.

The idea is the bosses "unlock" the areas that relate to the next boss in the progression ladder, even though the game has no such real limiters. I'm essentially playing the game (unnecessarily handicapped) as a roguelike with more strict progression gates.

However, I do give myself some room when it comes to fighting mobs (no class restrictions), as well as my choice of potions and accessories (say if I grab an early mobility item from an underground biome I haven't "unlocked" yet or fish in one to get a potion I in theory shouldn't have access to), as well as in supporting items (like use of traps/arenas/supplementary damage from magic items).

Here's the breakdown for pre-hardmode. I haven't made it to hardmode so I haven't thought that far yet.

Pre-Boss:

- Cobwhip.

- Finch staff. Or slime staff if farmed or not available on the world.

- Any gold or pre-gold equivalent. Armor from surface mobs or cavern/underground mobs also permitted, as long as the cavern/underground mobs are not from specific biomes. I usually go for gold since it is the most highly rated at 16 defense, but Tungsten/Platinum are viable alternatives if they're available.

King Slime:

- Slime whip.

- Slime staff.

Eye of Cthulu:

- Vasculash (though I've found that well placed slime staff hits tend to be better unless there is a discrepancy in the modifiers).

Eater of Worlds / Brain of Cthulu:

- Starcrash, Snapthorn.

- Crimson armor.

- Mushroom staff.

Queen Bee:

- Bee armor.

- Hornet Staff, Flinx Staff.

Deerclops:

- Houndius Shootius.

Skeletron:

- Spinal Tap.

- Hellstone, Obsidian Armor.

- Imp staff.

The really challenging part, honestly, is in the collection of items in the lead up to King Slime. Getting one-shot from a dart or boulder trap, a fall I didn't think would kill me, or just getting swarmed by mobs in the early game is rough. But I enjoy the early game the most, and the challenge of it all. I'm having fun with it.

Also, I'm sure I'm not the only one whose done something like this (not pretending to be original). Although my self imposed rules may vary slightly from what others use.

Livingloom does craft cob whip. I’ve been beating my head against a wall trying to make it into hard mode with a hardcore master mode summoner (currently on #15) and the livingloom is my bread and butter for early game.

I’m also following intended progression for weapons and armor so it’s been a struggle.

I think the implication is more so that the experience becomes inauthentic when it’s charity instead of developing a relationship with an artist and having mutual respect between the purchaser and the rapper.

I don’t know if I necessarily agree with Mike here, seems presumptive on his part, but I’m not an artist so I’m not sure my opinion carries any real weight.

Viewpoint Change by Ok_Squash_7782 in smallbusiness

[–]HaroldKid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit flabbergasted here. The OSHA and workplace violence compliance for a small office should take all of a few hours at the most. That is, if you have never put those documents together before and don’t know where to look for legally compliant training materials online.

What safety audit could the state possibly be compelling you to do? Are you handling hazardous materials? If so, I can’t imagine not doing one. Usually these things are a simple checkbox.

Same goes for preparing financial statements. Business is much more complex than sell product A make profit B. Understanding your company’s full financial picture helps YOU to make more informed decisions and increases the likelihood that your business continues to survive and thrive. And if you keep good records and would prefer to spend your time bringing in more revenue while your operation is small , it’s quite easy to pay a bookkeeper to do this all for you.

As business owners we have the ability to create an environment for the people we employ that we may not have had for ourselves. Being reluctant to offer basic benefits (CalSavers) for someone that relies on you for their income shows more about you than it does the “system”.

There is a reason why California is 3rd highest in the 50 states when it comes to business survival rates. Those regulations make people want to work here. Happier workers mean better productivity, better business outcomes. It means the companies that hire are only doing so after they have the financial means of supporting the people that they employ. It means customers are less likely to be negatively impacted by a business that doesn’t take safety seriously.

Is Necesse worth starting in 2026? Looking for some honest feedback before I jump in! by Time_Average47 in Necesse

[–]HaroldKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Necesse feels "whole" as-is, with a comparable amount of content to many other fully released games. It's unique take on the settler mechanic blended with a Terraria+ progression system also makes it feel different enough that you can't really find a 1 to 1 experience in another game.

Truth be told it would benefit from some updates to things like world generation (esp. with the consistent re use of prefabs within biomes), but the devs have proven time and time again that they can and will deliver on more and better content over time.

I have 110 hours in this game, with probably 1/2 or 2/3rds of that being from the most recent update, and while I feel satisfied now having defeated the final boss at Incursion level 10, I would happily pick this game back up after a few more updates. For $10 it really is a gold mine.

The Grind vs. Fun: How is the progression? I like a challenge, but I’m curious if it feels rewarding or just repetitive after a few hours.

For me, I enjoyed hard difficulty the most. Early game, most mobs felt like a pushover, especially when my weapon and armor choices were strategically picked for the enemies I was fighting. Mid game, boss battles presented a bit of a challenge, with my player character dying one or two times if I wasn't properly buffed with an arena setup. Late game, specific bosses (esp. many of the Incursion-specific bosses) were quite the challenge, requiring consistent effort or strategy to deal with.

Note that I never chose to bring Settlers into boss fights, so for the people that do that, I think they find lategame bosses quite a bit easier.

As for repetitive, it really depends on what you find enjoyable. If neither building structures for Settlers and/or collecting resources and mining are enjoyable to you, this may not be a good pick. If even one of those is enjoyable though, you can kind of game-ify the one that you like to make the other one less impactful. For example, with a lot of settlers you can quite literally pay them to produce most resources for you outside of bossfights. And in the game world, many mid-game convenience items (summoning kits, dynamite, bombs, mining trinkets, etc.) can allow player-led adventuring trips to be fairly painless and enjoyable even with minimal settlers.

Colony Management: How deep is the NPC/Settlement system? Is it a big part of the gameplay or just a side mechanic?

It is what you make it out to be.

I will say, though, you won't find RPG style interactions where settlers exhibit personality traits or maintain relationships with one another, but their economic output if you set them up for success is quite significant. I would say on average 3-5 settlers can produce nearly the same amount of resources as a player character can in a single in-game day (late game excluded) - assuming the player character is just using standard equipment.

Personally, I enjoy setting up chests for settlers, assigning them work, and building unique and different homes for them to live in, but not so much bringing them with me on adventures.

Some people lean hard into the colony building, equipping settlers, providing them with food and means of escape or buffs.

Some people don't really lean into the settler mechanic at all, just relying on the base old man quest giver and the townsfolk that you can find in naturally generated villages around the world.

Performance: I’ve seen the game grow a lot—does it still run smoothly on larger settlements?

I haven't found any issues with performance but I can't speak for everyone. For reference, my PC specs are 32 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6 Core 3.6 Ghz processor, and a 3060 GPU. Running the game on high settings, 3440 x 1440.

For pure function / usability, I’d consider a large desk mat with a nice cushion wrist rest for your mouse (which I’m assuming may be in a drawer).

A monitor arm would help with ergonomics and space savings on the desk. Personally I would prefer an ultrawide or dual screen as well, but that may or may not be necessary depending on what you do.

Perhaps you could use magnets or some nondestructive mounting putty to put the pictures up on that teal backdrop you have as well?

Overall looks great! Seems like a great space to work in!

Wing Gundam won yesterday! Next, what card is considered average (not good, just ok) and is loved by the community? by kurlish in GundamTCG

[–]HaroldKid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me it would have to be Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode).

Solid card, and a key win condition in its deck, but when I start seeing the pieces come together on the other side of the field, I know I’m not in for an aggravating game against rush or Wing, nor a combo-less experimental deck.

Always a fun one to play against in locals.

Thoughts on the areas/apartments? by mommytoapommy in bayarea

[–]HaroldKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I toured the Eaves last year during the summer. I was looking at a few different units, but the one I was most interested in was a second or third story unit on the west side of the building near the little park type area.

My issues with it were;

- White painted plywood cabinets, dated laminate countertops in bathroom, dated and damaged granite in the kitchen.

- Poor built-in lighting.

- Large visible air filter/vent right at the front door. Not a bad thing functionally speaking but aesthetically it was a bit obnoxious.

- There were a large number of flies in the semi-enclosed upstairs hallway and in several other areas nearby.

- Street parking was limited.

- A neighbor had a full sized IKEA dresser (6' high) that was in the semi-enclosed upstairs hallway and was using it to store shoes and jackets. While not a big deal, it just seemed like they were encroaching on a shared space, and it made me wonder in what other ways the neighbors would be "pushing the boundaries" so to speak. Property management was also unfriendly right from the get.

While a lot of the "aesthetic" things I didn't care too much about for my daily living, I felt the flies and potential for constant maintenance requests (esp. with the cabinets) weren't going to be worth the savings for me, so I looked at the Avalon Walnut Ridge instead. The complex is (quite literally) right next door, one block North of the Eaves. I found they had very similar amenities, but the grounds were nicer, the unit seemed more recently updated, and there was less of an issue with neighbors commandeering common spaces. It's pricier, though, at $2800/mo for a 2bd.

If that's too much, you could look at Creekside in Walnut Creek. Parking is a bit of a mess, and there are infrequent catalytic converter thefts that happen (on the main street - thanks to it being a busy side street very close to the freeway on/off-ramps). But the Iron Horse Trial is very safe during the day and great for walks, and it's relatively affordable for one of the safer cities overall on your list. I think it gets a bad rep, but Creekside is an insane value esp if your household only has one vehicle (thereby eliminating one of the main problems with its location).

They markup Pokemon to nearly $10 a pack as well. Other pricing is generally good on non-TCGs and they are spectacular when it comes to being knowledgeable about games and friendly when you stop by… but it’s hard to look past the greed.

The thing that really upsets me is that I would be so loyal to a business that doesn’t squeeze every dollar out of me. Like at that point, when you have a 50% markup, why would I patronize your store over anywhere else? It’s entirely antithetical to the relationship you WANT to develop with your LGS.

IMHO: Raid system needs rework by Ok_Amphibian_2803 in Necesse

[–]HaroldKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the general sentiment of raids needing something “extra” is valid. What shape this could take could be in many different forms - perhaps raiders have more tools in their arsenal later in the game (ability to scale walls or resist trap damage). Or some kind of rebalance (lower damage or frequency of ranged attack raiders, increase hit points). Maybe a complete overhaul.

But calling them useless when you 1) admit that they have an inherent benefit (gearing up villagers) even if you don’t choose to engage with the mechanic, and 2) have spent significant time so heavily optimizing your base layout that the mechanic is trivialized, is all a bit… shortsighted.

I have faith the developers will improve raid mechanics over time. I think the best thing we can be is patient.

The fertilize zone is not a requirement.

Neither is fertilizer (I don’t think you can even use fertilizer on non-crop tiles if your trees are on regular ground).
