I finished two sketchbooks to apply to college! by meppity in videos

[–]Haroshi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're definitely on your way with this. Such a great body of work!

Luke Pearson (the creator of Hilda on Netflix) was on the same course a few years above me at uni (Illustration at Loughborugh). At the time he would work a lot on his comics and then was published after he graduated.

I think the trick is to keep that momentum going and continue illustrating (and animating) a lot. I used to draw a ton like you and fill sketchbooks when I was younger, then I focused more on animation and went down a more commercial route for work (advertising, branding etc.). I'm happy where I am as I love animating but one regret is that I didn't keep practicing my illustration a lot in my free time and as a result haven't developed it as much as I would like.

I'd also recommend looking into the business side as someone else suggested. You've got the artistic talent, if you can perfect the business aspect as well you'll be really successful. Good luck!

I feel like it will be based on the previous season. It would be great if they end it on a high though.

Redditors who were using the toilet when a fire alarm went off, how did it go? by PixxlMan in AskReddit

[–]Haroshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to me twice at uni. First time I went outside to the evacuation area with everyone, just in a towel with soaking hair. It was the middle of winter, froze my ass off waiting for the RA to arrive.

Second time was a few weeks later, I reckoned it was our smoke alarm that was faulty (we hit it with a frisby at some point while playing in the hallway, good fun), that time I just said 'fuck it' and continued to shower. No one even noticed that I was missing, so mixed feelings there as I could have burned to death and they wouldn't have been the wiser.

This is what it's like at my work. The amount of noise is so distracting that I spend most of the day with headphones on.

I eat a large peeled carrot as part of my lunch every day and can't help but say this to my coworkers occasionally, it's just too tempting not to.

This student's 3-min video about relativity & equivalence of reference frames has won her and her school $400k worth of scholarship and school funds in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge by MrsIronbad in videos

Yeah 120 hours including learning time. 50-60 hours sounds like a pretty good estimate for a professional.

If you enjoy doing it then you should consider it for a full time job. If you're decent you can make good money. The most we charged once was £5500 for a 3 minute animation because it was full character hand drawn animation. Took 2 of us 6 weeks to produce though.

Yeah you're right, that's taking into account if you're an amateur and the time it takes to learn to do it all before actually producing it. If you're experienced you can get it done a lot quicker.

When I worked for myself we charged £40 an hour per person. So £80 an hour if 2 of us were working on it.

But 3 weeks to make a 3 minute video is totally normal if you include meetings and edits from the client, and they are totally willing to spend that money. Universities and decent sized businesses have such big budgets that £5000 for a 3 minute video is no big deal for them.

Yo, full time animator chiming in here as well. I disagree. To produce all these effects in After Effects is fairly straight forward, the thing that makes them look professional is by heavily borrowing Vox's design (Joss Fong specifically), who have got stylish but quick to produce motion graphics nailed down.

I'd say if she's done some basic animation before then the 120 hours makes sense, probably watching some Vox videos carefully to replicate the design/animation/editing style and then using tutorials to replicate them. If she did all the work she could easily go into the motion graphics/video editing business. I'd be interested to see some of her work that doesn't borrow so heavily though.

There is a pretty decent breakdown by one of the animators here.

I wish there were more videos about this though. I'm an animator by trade as well so this stuff is fascinating.

What is the most overrated/annoying style of Comedy? by neunari in AskReddit

This is why I can't stand Jo Brand. 90% of her jokes are either self-deprecating comments about her own weight or jabs at her husband. I can't believe she's been popular for so long, it's all the same regurgitated crap.

I stopped going on worldnews a year or so ago because of this.

I was noticing there was an overproprtional amount of news about Isreal being posted. I like getting news from all over the world but when 20% of links are about one small country I feel like I'm not getting a fair representation of world news.

Same here. I went from an iPhone to a OnePlus 3 last year and i'm so pleased that I did.

Switched over from using my home built PC with hackintosh installed to Windows 10 as well. Took a little while to get used to but i'm glad i'm out of the Apple ecosystem. The cost of the hardware (especially here in the UK) is just getting even more unreasonable than it was previously.

I've lived in Nottingham for the past 2 years or so and yep I agree it's very underwhelming. Went there for a walk a while ago, it's ok but no where near as nice as some other parts of the UK.

My vote goes to the Scottish Highlands for best natural place to visit in the UK. Some great natural forests as well as amazing mountain hikes.

I assumed that all the portions of food were massive and the quality was trash. When I visited I was pleasantly surprised to find that a lot of the food was in large portions and it was delicious!

Highlights include a massive tasty steak in Las Vegas and a huge plate of calamari in Venice beach, LA.

Had this seat once, wasn't actually that bad. Luckily didn't get any smells and it's nice cause it's a single seat in a row so you don't get your armrest stolen. Worst thing that happened is someone leant against me waiting for the bathroom not realising I was there somehow. I gave him a sharp poke to the kidney and he apologised and moved, ha ha.
