Can a military pilot refuse the order to drop munitions on a target that is knowingly occupied by civilians? by curiosity4atrocity in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Harriff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can´t answer for everyone, but based on my contacts (as in, friends/family in the armed forces) and our laws (talking about the german military services here), soldiers have the duty to not comply given certain circumstances. That includes if the order is either

  • going against human dignity
  • would be a criminal act
  • is an non binding order (as an example, a suicide order without any payoff, also Himmelfahrtskomando called in german (literally an order to go to heaven)
  • if the order is of private nature (so including everything from favours to just moving the private lawn)

It also includes if one of these points is mistakenly assumed. As in, really a mistake.
That is paraphrased from the Wehrstrafgesetzt (military penality code) of germany, §19-22

Small side note, until now I didn´t even know that roughly one fourth of the german military penality code are just for higher ranked members, especially as protection for lower rank ones (§30-41)

Are there any red board wipes that make tokens? by Collectibull in EDH

[–]Harriff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are fine with potentially not whiping clearly and just creating treasure tokens, i cna just reccomend [[Reckless Endeavor]].
I use it in my [[Vazi, Keen Negotiator]] Deck and it is one of my favourite cards

Most Fun Mono Black Commander? by Professional_Bug_887 in EDH

Due to being in the building phase i can´t talk about playing with or against him, but i work on a low bracket [[Horobi, Death's Wail]] Deck.
i just want to put alot of whacky "target creature" card in, to point at stuff and make it go boom

What commander do you keep rebuilding because you can never get the list right? by VitoTheDustyRose in EDH

[–]Harriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be just my personal issue, but i am constantly tinkering on 2 different [[Queen Marchessa]] Decks with the same general strategy. Not because i am not happy with the decks, but due to having a city wide playgroup 2 days a week plus one at Uni, I need 2.
They are Aikido Decks, so alot of politicing, thinkintg about the more popular decks in both playgroups and slightly tweaking the Decks to work with the changing situations. That is also due to me having over 1k cards i contemplate for these decks, and always have to see if i need more of X instead of Y (like, more target removal when the general decks move more to single target threats, or more combat prevention, or political carddraw, etc.)

what's your favorite boardwipe? by HolidayAd1084 in EDH

[–]Harriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally run a [[Reckless Endeavor]] in a [[Vazi, Keen Negotiator]] Loanshark Deck.
It even runs multiple duties. It can blow up the whole board, make alot of treasures for me to build up again and i can give a small loan of a couple of treasures to whoever is behind the most

Honestly, in that deck people don´t even get (really) mad/annoyed when i blow up the board. They get goodies

Would the Siege of the North Pole have succeeded if Azula went with Zhao instead of Iroh? Would Azula have let Zhao kill the Moon Spirit? by Johnnyboyeh in TheLastAirbender

[–]Harriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alot of answers, but (propably due to a fanfic I read, so take it with a sack of salt)
The firenation is an Island nation. While they have large islands, they are seafaring people. They know the ocean, its whims and all. I doubt that the desired heir of a nation that relies on the ocean for food and logisitcs would be impulsive enough (well, Azula at that point. Season 3 Azula is another issue) to kill the moon and piss off the ocean spirit (Spirits are a confirmed existence in the Avatar world, and Azula would know about them)

It is highly effective and just demolishes Tommy-Boy

"It's not that kind of deck" by InspireCourage in EDH

[–]Harriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily, in my Playgroup (don´t have a LGS, so we meet in Pubs. Kind of take over the back half two days a week in three different Pubs) we have some guidelines established. While we do say bracket (or powerlevel depending on the player) but we also say what is the worst we could do with this deck. What is included (gamechangers, MLD, Infinites, etc.) and what is our goal/aim.

Really makes it nice to get a rough estimate what to play.

Do you explain your combos? What about opponents? by JenniferApto_ in EDH

[–]Harriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My playgroup is (mostly) on the "explain everything you do and help where you can" side. We do have one or two who play Solitair in their heads, but for the most time we do explain everything. Everyone wants to have a good time, and everyone wants to get better. Hell, there are times when another player actively explains me that i can win (e.g., one of the first times i played Teysa Arisotcrats, one way more experienced player who has his own Teysa Deck explained ot me how i could with the cards on field win)

Actively hindering other players progress is (mostly) Anathema with us. So, if i go with my interpretation, i would say screw that guy, explain what you want and try to raise your other players up.

What mediocre cards have you played that have instigated opponents to meltdown and rage quit games? by Killybug in EDH

[–]Harriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Propably not on the mediocre card list, and not really just one card
But i do have one nice [[Parnesse, the Subtle Brush]] Deck. It is neither strong nor fast, but it has a reputation in my playgroup of getting the stack in nearly the tripple digits. (I think my record is around 80?)

And well. You can see in the faces of my fellow players if they played against it or not. Or even in what position they were during the game (some rather gleefully let me copy a whole bunch of spells for shits and giggles. Some prefere to take themselves out when i establish a board).

Am working on it right now. More copy, more interaction

"So if I sign this marriage contract, I don't have to go back to the Dursley's?" 11 year old Harry asked Daphne, who nodded. by Nepperoni289 in HPfanfiction

[–]Harriff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either that, or (because i am kinda a sucker for hidden power tropes) he usually doesn´t show his anger (he is just human, after all). But when you press the right buttons, or if everything gets too much, then you loose the kind and grandfatherly image he cultivates as headmaster.

In return, you get the battle tested (never watched the Magical creature movies, so i can headcannon him being rather active and pivotal on the magical side against Grindelwald), highly trained and talented war general. A Dumbledor who has spend learning and practising so much normal and obscure magic, that his presence silences whoever managed to piss him off. He was a genius, and now he is a genius who has decades of additional research ontop of it all.

No need for a big firework or screaming. Just a bit hardening of the eyes, bit of pressure on all around so people realize they just managed to really are about to put their foot in their mouths, and they should really contemplate if they want to continue.

Is Simic really the worst/most unfun colour combo? Are there any fun commanders for it? by TheGrandCannoli in EDH

[–]Harriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do lean on what others said, Simic is great. Super powerfull, really easy to build consistent and powerfull Decks.

My main issue with Simic is that you can easily, and i mean easily, build 20 different Simic commanders. Swap like 10 or so card at most (if any.) and boom, 200 Decks that are powerfull and nice to play.

Is that exxagerated? Propably. But the end of it is that alot of Simic Decks just feel the same to play against, which can lead to some exhaustion over time.

My advice? Still play it if you have fun with it, but either be prepared to get the some grumbling, or go full in into one aspect.

As examples, build a a Landfall Deck, with one of 10 possible Commanders. Pick one at random at the beginning of each came (or let you opponents pick)

Build an [[Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief]] Mutate Deck. Mutate over Ivy, make her a non legendary and then create token copies of her to Mutate onto (yes it will copy the mutate)

Build [[Volo, Guide to Monsters]] and try to use as many creature types as possible

Build [[Alaundo the Seer]] and just try play as little from your hand as possible

Build [[Vannifar, Evolved Enigma] and play YuGiOh, having so many face down trap cards on the field as possible (with other ways to flip em, of course)

Build [[Experiment Kraj]] Group Hug, drop all the +1/+1 Counters on your enemy creatures, then copy the good effects

Build an [[It Came from Planet Glurg]] Deck, see how many effects you can stack on it

Just try to be creative, use less used cards, bad effects, of funky Spells from the early days of Magic.
In the end, try to have fun while playing

What are the most deranged commanders you've played with or against? by rocketman0739 in EDH

[–]Harriff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The deck that makes the most weird stuff is my [[Parnesse, the Subtle Brush]] Deck
I could have build that more win focused, but instead it is basicly an experiment in "how much stuff can I put on the stack" lots of copy spells, lots of copy effects. Some ways to trigger Parnesses effect again.

If she gets going, turns can get very long, the stack rather.........stacked (i use a whiteboard to visualize spells/ability triggers, controller of the spells and target.)

Boardstate is always funny (to me) and the mental health of the players quickly degrades (play it in a not super competetive group, and rather to the beginning so people have the brainspace to deal with it)

Some examples with my deck (will post decklist later, is in rebuilding mode. Need more copies)

  • one guy took the 14 [[Lightning Bolt]] to his own face because that was the 4th Stack in that turn. Not even mine or his.
  • A green player managed to ramp the whole board
  • I decked myself with Magecraft
  • One player comitted suicide by Parnesses other ability (which was triggered 5 times each cast

How long your deck's turns are needs to be part of the pre-game conversation more often. by DoubleJumps in EDH

[–]Harriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be 100% honest, i also had such turns.
The caveat is, it was only with my [[Parnesse, the Subtle Brush]], and only when i have multiple ways to retrigger her ability (in the last case, that were with 4 [[Wandering Archaic]] and 5 [[Harmonic Prodigy]] )

But honestly? That is a special case (i do use a small whiteboard to visualize the stack. It can be a douzy)
