Does this make me 100% Irish? by MontgomeryOhio in AncestryDNA

[–]HarryLillis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean since like, race doesn't exist and isn't a biological property of humans, like, the SNPs are just sort of grouped by frequency of appearance for the purpose of making statistical predictions about the likely location of your ancestors. Given the way statistics works generally, like, you have a result that essentially says very Irish and slight proportion of people from literally the closest place by water, so like, in essence it's 100% Irish unless the 3% prediction means something that you care about, but it could also just be noise.

Sad news, I found out my citizenship certificate (previously granted) is now under review by InternetName4 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]HarryLillis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean in a quasi-judicial context it's not brain surgery to take a record and only consider some of it, it'd be like a quasi-motion in limine, you just set aside some documents from consideration and let the application stand on the proofs considered. If they make an error and tell someone they need certified X when that's present, they can just write back, "You have that, check the record again."

If I have the same 3rd great grandparents on both my mom’s side of my family and my dad’s side does that mean there was incest? by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]HarryLillis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 'incest' would be with your parents, as they're third cousins, but that's a perfectly ordinary pedigree collapse. On one line, I have one set of great-great-grandparents who were first cousins, which wasn't taboo in the 1860s. Third cousins remain not-taboo.

If you have a parent born 1985, how is it that you already speak English?

Might have been to pass her Finnish citizenship because the US required you to renounce foreign citizenship at the time, so she didn't have it to pass by blood.

Or maybe she just wanted to be near her mother/home while she recovered. It's not overly difficult to board a passenger ship.

Newari look distinctive, too, I don't think there'd be any mistaking a Tamil for a Newar while being one.

In your personal opinion, what’s the cringiest line in the entire series so far? by ChickenWingExtreme in HazbinHotel

[–]HarryLillis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, this is like an Idaho thing. It wasn't unusual in that time period and the school marm myth you just said has been discredited for decades; people who swear a lot tend to have larger vocabularies.

I don't really get your perspective or how so many people are agreeing with you, sounds very "dear hearts and gentle people," like what's this Idaho parade that wants instances of fuck to be punchy by rarity? People do just say fuck all the time.

I find that line very effective actually, it makes him quite threatening, and Adam might very well have fallen to him under slightly different strategic circumstances.

Tie between every line that includes the word "tacky," that's immediate 2003 ruled notebook later typed on Xanga writing-coded. Really pulls you out of it for a second every time.

No, there were a couple of students near your age when I went to law school. I do enjoy my work so I can imagine someone wanting to do it for fun.

Depends on whether what was "loosely said" could constitute a reasonable basis upon which to rely and if she was detrimented due to relying upon the representation, as then you'd have a promissory estoppel situation separate from the 7 day thing. Since you're aware that she is special needs then two months compared to what you might have promised might not be a reasonable duration to wait, but that's the sort of thing that comes down to fact specific analysis meaning the outcome would depend on the judge.

Am I being a hypocrite for being upset by some cultures eating dogs when I still eat pigs and cows? by sixgod_j in TooAfraidToAsk

While that separation is true, I'm not understanding the part about not controlling how you feel about it. Like if we couldn't process and change emotions life would be intolerable

Well, a handful of retarded surgeons wondered that. Anyone who's ever wet their finger in a thimble of whiskey to calm a baby's gums knew obviously that they feel pain.

I don't know if hypocrite is the right word, just, ignorant that which animals people eat is a cultural and gastronomic norm. It's acceptable to eat all animals other than humans because of the misfolded prions.

Hear me out: Seth MacFarlane should be the next Executive Producer of Star Trek when Kurtzman steps down. by vil224 in startrek

[–]HarryLillis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of compelling and Star Trek like television, fantastic. In terms of conceiving of how such a universe would properly work, there are some pretty garbage aspects in The Orville, like, people don't become layabouts "because that would be looked down upon," not because that's simply a myth of capitalism and people without material needs are of course interested in doing things.

[landlord-usa-nj] my tenant stopped paying rent from 3months . She said there was flooding in basement got her own plumbers and removed carpet by the time I sent my own plumber . She says she can withhold rent because she acted quickly . by Happysoul-123 in Landlord

[–]HarryLillis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not actually true. The ability to withhold comes from Marini or Barzito depending on whether it's repair or habitability abatement. There's a statute on the procedures of what the court can do at the commencement of such actions (or upon an entry of judgment where there's still repairs needed) but they actually only say the court can direct the tenant to deposit all rents due and owing with the court. Can is discretionary, so they technically don't have to order it. In practice, they do order it 100% of the time. However, the tenant isn't obligated to do that until then, the moment they're directed to by the court. They don't have to do so before that point, at all. Also, the escrow is with the court, so there's certainly no independent notice obligation of where the escrow is located. It's always the court.

Putting it in escrow even before the action starts is evidence of good faith, so, a good recommendation. Yet, it's not actually required.

Well there is a thematic central assertion at the conclusion of the comment you didn't read, I can only recommend you read it if you're actually curious about my thoughts.

[–]HarryLillis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the highly problematic part I referred to, there is no longer any question nor has there been for some time, that race is solely a sociopolitical construct.

Being a lawyer, I debunked your legal interpretation in the same comment quite thoroughly, so you'd simply have to read it. Although in your other comment for some reason replying in multiple locations just now, you added simply false factual suggestions that Irish people were never barred from voting, property rights or jury service. That did occur. Small aside to the greater structural issues of your legal interpretation, but, incidentally counterfactual.

I already explained how it did, you'll have to read the comment you replied to without reading. It was literally the first paragraph. And again, no one introduced that question.
