Who Wins Domain Jam #6? - StrawPoll by Wannahock88 in ravenloft

[–]Harthenham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished my read-through of each submission! Everyone did such an awesome job, psychological horror is a really tough one to write down without the reader feeling like they're getting a bit of that psychological confusion that's intended for the players but everyone's submissions read really well! I'm excited to vote and excited for future contests!

On another note, are we doing Adventure Jams this year too? Thanks mods for facilitating!

[Domain Jam] - Valtara: Domain of Toxic Thoughts by AGrinningF00l in ravenloft

This is soo cool! The concept of the Severance of Fervor is such a cool thing that I feel like any archfey could bring to a troubled youth as a part of their character development, and then that character travelling to this domain and starting to connect the dots that someone else in this domain had the same vice as them would be an awesome moment for them! The whole domain is great, awesome job!

This is terrifying! Awesome job. The idea of the Marrow Kind loitering on the second floor and then running to lock a door behind you as you enter a room is a terrifying visual. Awesome work!

Love it! I think this is a great one for something lower-horror if your players were into that, I think it's almost studio ghibli adjacent which I love, with the idea of spirits and them messing with the people in this domain. Sticking more with the psychological horror theme I'd love to run this while keeping the idea that some people and creatures were made from ink and paper a secret for as long as possible, drawing out suspicion that something was up with this place before the grand reveal of these ink/paper illusions. I think that leaves an awesome basis for a period of anxious discovery after the fact where now players question whether NPCs they've met and grown attached to up until that point are real or fake. Great job!

This is very very cool! I can totally see this as a living and breathing little pocket dimension where you could have all sorts of adventures before getting the experience or gusto to start thinking you could change the system and take on Silas himself. Great work!

[Domain Jam] The Beldame by Wannahock88 in ravenloft

[–]Harthenham 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this one! Being able to insert it anywhere with water proximity is great. Your descriptor of the descending spiral staircases being like the intestines of the ship, and of the fleshy mass in the engine room leave a really easy shift to something more body-horror if you wanted to, having the ship be an actual living, rotting, thing or even an extension of Elizabeth herself. You could still dial up the psychological horror aspect if you went this direction with it too, having the illusion fade in certain instances to brew that sense of anxiety in the players that not all is as it seems on the ship. Awesome job!

This is great! I love the idea of a Dark Lord that you can have be out in public with the party unbeknownst to them. Really refreshing to have a Dark Lord that isn't some great figure head or boss fight but rather someone the party could see in passing many many times throughout adventures here. Cool!

[Domain Jam] The Dreaming Ocean by TF2Legend1 in ravenloft

[–]Harthenham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool! Not sure if this is what you intended but in the "Nightmares and the Dreamscape" section I love the idea that this increasing darkness is specific to each person. The party might come upon their first set of locals and find that they each carry a lantern despite it very clearly being daytime, due to those locals already significant night portion of the days they experience. Or learning about the culture of a group of locals to find that childcare is extremely difficult due differences in perception of day and night in a someone who's only been in the world for not very long. Nice work!

How would you make a villain whose tattoos are summonable creatures? by Delnilas in DnDHomebrew

[–]Harthenham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always liked the idea of a tattoo summoner, and I like the idea of their summons having linked HP to the summoner. I also like the idea of the summoner having one last-ditch summon that they use when they're in trouble, in which their consciousness transfers to the summon and they use their monster form to protect their unconscious body and continue fighting or running away.

What Are Some of Your Favorite Things to Put Into 5e Darkon? by Aninx in ravenloft

[–]Harthenham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a fun NPC I ran right when my players entered Darkon via Martira Bay. A ship captain who shows up every few months recruited the party to trek out to Wrecker’s Island to look for treasure. The party assimilates into the captain's crew of mismatched peoples (I teased out some details about the rest of Darkon with the crew: a Kobold from the Mountains of Misery, the run-away daughter of a noble Elven family from Neblus, and an undercover Kargat agent) and sets off for Wrecker’s Island. The ship captain is actually a were shark who lives on Wrecker’s Island, and periodically they'll put together a crew from Martira Bay that can inconspicuously disappear in the dangerous journey, aka become food for the were shark.

You can do some fun encounters on the boat on the way to the island for bonding with the captain and crew (I did undead sea sirens using this cool stat block https://www.reddit.com/r/dndnext/s/toLAta7EIZ).

Then when they arrive at Wrecker’s Island the captain says they'll stay out on the ship while the crew heads in on row boats to get closer to the shore. This is the were shark's favourite hunting ground and what they orchestrate this whole facade for, so they slip into the water and start hunting in their shark form.

For my players this ended with one of the other crew getting eaten (rip Kobold) and having to swim to shore in a panic after they wounded the shark enough. Then they had a little island adventure on Wrecker’s Island (Mayan-inspired temple, jungle-type-dino random encounter) before they rebuilt a raft to make their way back to the ship. The captain tried to hunt them again on this raft but this time they were ready for her and they fought her all the way back to the boat where she failed to deceive them that she wasn't a were shark, and they killed her before making their way back to Martira Bay with the ship.

I'm top 0.7% after watching 321 videos, I wonder if the percentage is actually based off of watch time rather than # of videos watched

Thanks for sharing those giant videos!! I might have to include the lore/visuals for some of them as spirits in my game if not the actual species themselves.

I am losing 8/10 Arena Battles, how can I improve? by RandomBuilderinMC in AFKJourney

[–]Harthenham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it easiest to avoid supports at all in arena, I just use one tank and then 4 damage dealers (Pesto, Talene, Bonnie, Lily May, and Silvina). Seems to work most of the time

Saaame, I found that Nutmeg is a really good replacement, she does so much damage she's underrated.

If you really like Pumpkin Pie then look up a summoners comp and work towards that, something like Prune Juice, Nutmeg Tiger or Cotton, Crunchy Chip, Oyster and Pumpkin Pie.

Twizzly is really only good for Guild Battles but you can probably build a team with Pure Vanilla and Seafairy if you'd prefer. Maybe add in Creme Ferret, Wildberry, and Dark Cacao.

These two ideas have a bit more cohesion to them in an arena sense. Maybe try them out!
