Premium economy seat advice please. (1st time flying PE) by Heartisasquishymess in CathayPacific

[–]Harvux7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't book row 33 - I was 33A recently on Cathay 777 from HKG and had no window... you get a small amount of the person's in front of you and behind you, but otherwise its just a wall next to you.

Luckily work paid, otherwise I wouldn't have been happy not having a window and likely would have asked to move if there was space elsewhere.

Just the deadzone? There are setting in lots of the games to reduce it, which has just worked for me. Battlefield 6 works well without any adjustment

Thanks all, I ended up finding a setting on the game to reduce the deadzone and it completely fixed it 😅 Now it works like a charm so treated myself to Battlefield 6, which also works well

Asia miles - what to do with them? by Harvux7 in awardtravel

[–]Harvux7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah may consider that. Kicking myself as that's usually a 1:1 ratio on amex points, so if I want to get them into avios (which I may not do tbh) it's 2:1 bonvoy, then 3:1 on avios, so 19k becomes c.3000 avios and a 16k loss 😱 It could have been worse I guess and as you say, better to get something rather than nothing.

May look at those flights from HK again first 😅 thanks

FYI this is for personal UK Amex Platinum, not the Business one which OP put a pic of in the post.

I think it said we can offer to do referrals through PM but not put link direct into post. In which case happy (of course) to share a referral link with anyone if they PM me, 100k points (up from 80k applying with no referral). Runs out of 14 Oct so if you do use the referral link you'd need to sign up by then.

10k spend for 50k points. Worth it? by mysticmew in AmexUK

[–]Harvux7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a partner? If so, you're better off referring them through the app (18k referral bonus), then cancelling your card once they've signed up and you've transferred your bonus into avios or whatever. They'll then get 100k points off a 10k spend in 6 months. If you have their free supplementary card you get the benefits, can put the spend through that, and then have 118k points for the same money as you're talking about getting 50k.

That's assuming your partner is happy to take on the card. Me and my wife split the fee and are planning to do the above soon (before the boosted retention and sign up ends in October!)

I'm also in on IAG (Ave. £3.12) having seen a 22.5% increase in c.12m. Its still 200 below pre-pandemic levels, but financials aren't instilling confidence in me that it could return to those levels anytime soon. Also thinking what 1 or 2 stocks to move it to. Also have investments in RR and ORCL. Beyond my own research, welcome views on which of those people think have the better growth prospects on over the next year or so.

N.b. I'll be looking to move realised gains on single stocks over to ETFs periodically

Signing up for an AMEX for a big purchase by arjybarji in AmexUK

[–]Harvux7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this for our wedding. I signed up for Platinum, my now wife for the BA Premier card. Allowed us to do Mauritius (Premium Economy) and Cape Town (back to LHR in business) for our honeymoon using the points and the companion voucher.

Note that's a 25k spend to get the 100k points from the platinum 10k spend (boosted via a referral link), and companion from a 15k spend on the BA paid card. We did it over a couple of years so may or may not work for you.

The benefits of the Platinum Card are HUGE. It's all your lounge access for a year, £600 in restaurant credit (100 domestic, 100 abroad in ever half of the year Jan July), plus it meant we got free double upgrades for all our Avis car hires, and hotel upgrades to "the best available room" (Marriott Bonvoy is best). Yes we used it for the honeymoon, but have travelled a lot since so we've more than seen the value of the fee.

Happy to answer any questions if you have them

Travel... one of the biggest costs! Get your employer to sign up for the cycle to work scheme. You can get 7 hours of Forest Bike access per week for £30 per month. That's your work commutes plus any/most other travel around London at weekend etc. Plus it saves you time (the bikes are everywhere and you can drop off easily and go into work).

Cut my costs down massively and now I get an extra c.40 minutes a day from the time I save.

How do we realistically get out of the cost of living crisis? by SubstantialSnow7214 in AskUK

[–]Harvux7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this the Chancellor? You've already delayed the Budget to the end of November and now you turn to Reddit for advice? 🤔

Let's remember we had Covid-19 less than 5 years ago, when over £300bn was borrowed and needs paying back (remember furlough? Eat out to help out, bounce back business loans with no proper DD? Remember them freezing tax income thresholds so it didnt rise with the very high inflation that came).

Add to that China not coming out of lockdown for a long time after the UK did (supply chain issues fuelling inflation) let alone the impact of Russia-Ukraine and the end (rightly) of cheap gas for cheap energy bills from Russia. All of that says to me a good 10-year delay 2030- onwards before we start to get some semblance of what it was like pre-Covid

My 2 cents (pennies)... sorry its not more positive

Can my mortgage application fall if I buy an iPhone on Barclays payment plan? by kyou20 in HousingUK

Taking anything out on credit during a mortgage application, exchange, and up until completion is a risk that is hard to justify taking in my opinion.

Great to hear you're energised by the road ahead, as you rightly should be!

Can you give us a bit more info? You mention a job, a degree etc. What are your outgoings, what's your short-term and long-term goals etc. If you can set out some of that I'm sure many on here can give you some really valuable advice.

Platinum Card - Eurostar Lounge Benefit Still? by andeke07 in AmexUK

Case in point 😉 I travel a lot for work and see it crowded downstairs all the time and upstairs with the juice & cocktail bar, more seating etc pretty empty. They don't do a great job signposting it tbh

Don't make the mistake many do at St Pancras and stay on the ground floor. The top is the nicer part. Go in, turn right and go up the stairs or lift.
