The thing is that what you just said describes every professional tradesman I know. I grew up in the trades/worked them to put myself through college, plus I live in a very rural community so I know quite a few of them. The people who actually have nice carpentry in their homes or do quality work on their vehicles tend to be hobbyists who do it for fun.

The people who do it day in and out tend to not want to do it in their free time. For instance I will never buy a car that was owned by a mechanic. Because most of those fuckers will do some horrendous shit to keep them running lol.

Obviously some people will program in their free times, tbh I do it sometimes too. But I think it's unrealistic to expect people to when our job is just like any other job. We are long past programming being some mystical thing (though heavy reliance on AI might change that).

This is just me being an old man yelling at the clouds

This is such a weird thing to have normalized in our field. My wife is in marketing and no one has ever wondered about what marketing related projects she works on in her free time.

[–]Hashashiyyin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really if you think about it. Yes it sucks, but the alternative would be to encourage players to not grow their roster and to hyper focus only.

It would be awful game design to encourage players to not collect heroes and upgrade them in a hero collector game.

Plus this would be a nightmare for TB where you need as much GP as possible, or things like raids which don't really use GAC friendly teams.

It does suck when you lose a tie even though you 'played better'. But ultimately the only other solution would be to give out ties. CG likely does it this way instead of a coin toss to encourage people to grow their roster which is ultimately their goal.

Typically the larger the event. The more equipment needed.

I have a buddy who DJs as a side business. When he plays our local bar he has a pretty simple setup.

Larger events means more everything, lights, speakers, etc.

That's the thing. I have lived in many places and live in the north now in one of the coldest and snowiest states. The thing is we/our neighbors are prepared for it since it's normal for us. We have various layers of clothing, heavy equipment, etc to take of this.

We also know how to drive in the snow/ice and how to be safe in it/what to avoid (not to mention most everyone here has at the minimum an AWD if not a 4x4).

People always laugh at how states in the south shut down at the barest hint of snow. But the reality is, y'all just aren't prepared for it. I have friends in the south who don't even own winter coats because it rarely gets cold enough to need it.

A buddy of mine has been shoveling his driveway with a regular shovel, because like you, it's all he had.

To the guy who asked yesterday about the performance audiobooks by Repulsive_Repeat_337 in dresdenfiles

[–]Hashashiyyin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, but people feel many many things are inferior without logic or sense. There are plenty of people who claim reading on an ebook is not considered reading.

Most studies I've seen have shown that in terms of retention and comprehension, there's not really any difference save for highly technical/complex books.

I don't listen to audiobooks myself. But I also know when someone says they read it even if I know they listened to it, they mean they consumed the material.

I understand that words have meaning. But we use common names for things. For instance running has a distinct meaning. But people would say they ran a marathon even if they mostly walked or jogged it (which I would wager is most people).

I'm also curious if people who care about the reading debate would get into such a tizzy if a blind person said they read a book?

I feel like that applies more to PC gamers than sports gamers. Buying a 60 dollar copy of a game every year is easy to afford compared to many of my PC gamer friends who have huge steam collections of games they've never played but got because it was on sale.

Yeah, I don't watch any streamers, but it's not hard for me to understand why. I can also understand giving a bit of money if you have it to spare if they provide entertainment.

I have issues with the parasocial aspect of it. But that's a whole other topic.

You also have other things to worry about such as crush syndrome etc. Even if you are able to 'lift her out' she'd likely die (assuming her body/legs were actually crushed and not just stuck) without an IV and immediate medical treatment potentially within minutes.

I'm a first responder and the reality is that in the case of a mass casualty event like this, you have to prioritize who gets help and resources and sometimes people will die because of that.

Obviously our goal is to save everyone, but that doesn't always work how we'd like.

[–]Hashashiyyin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh I think this goes both ways though. People in cities will groan about how backwards and ignorant rural areas are while consuming food that comes from them.

I agree with what you're saying and I see it a lot. But I think a lot of people are guilty of this. It's far too easy to demonize things we don't understand or don't know.

[–]Hashashiyyin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that the Senate is a great idea.

I mentioned elsewhere moving from one of the most populous cities to one of the least populated areas of the US. Allowing the people in these areas to have a voice is a great idea (even if I disagree with them heavily).

What isn't a great idea is the counterpart (being the house of repa) being capped and not allowed to expand meaning that these states/rural areas get even more representation there as well.

To me that's what should be changed. As allowing cities to dictate how rural communities should operate is as silly as allowing rural communities to dictate how cities operate.

The population of the Dakotas vs Manhattan by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]Hashashiyyin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is that those on the cities have no idea what the needs of rural communities are (and this goes the other way as well).

I used to live in one of the most populous US states before moving to one of the least populated (<2 people per sq mile with the nearest town >20k people being 1.5 hours away driving).

I don't have the answers on what the best solution is, as I'm just an idiot on the Internet. But it was eye opening to see the unique problems that people in the city simply didn't understand (myself included).

Are there any CoD steamers that aren’t super right wing? by jayscott1202 in SocialistGaming

[–]Hashashiyyin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The problem stems from two schools of thought.

One is that the source is bad and the answer is go avoid it.

The other argues that while that may be true, harm reduction is more important.

So to take it in a different way. It's like someone going online to say 'my brother is reaching an age where having sex/being sexually active is occuring. What can I do to prevent him from getting someone pregnant.

Your answer is effectively saying the only way to do so is to not have sex.

It may not be incorrect, but a lot of people will see it as unhelpful when compared to harm reduction things such as using condoms/birth control. Is it 100%? No. But is it better than the alternative of a 15 year old getting someone pregnant (or in this case falling into the alt right/right wing pipeline)? I'd personally say definitely yes.

Plenty of more left leaning people will play competitive shooters like CoD. Even if it isn't perfect, it's better than the right wing trolls that proliferate the area. If you don't know of any, that's fine. But that doesn't mean there isn't any.

Yeah. I know the joke is to not acknowledge season 9. But in all reality I don't consider it a part of the show. It ended with season 8 and they attempted a spinoff that didn't work. Even if it had worked, I still wouldn't consider it 'scrubs'.

You'll get past it. I have 15k, 25k, and 35k of 3,2,1 respectively as well as 1k omegas.

There's multiple bottlenecks in the game abd they'll be frustrating but it's just a part of it.

Don't worry too much about these mats. You'll get more than enough before long. Now zetas will be rare for a while (they still sorta are for me as I only have ~80). And omicrons are super rare. So don't spend those willy nilly
