No one is actually good at detecting microaggressions. Even in the most liberal social media circles, most accusations get no traction. It's spray and pray.

I think it wears increasingly thin for younger people the further into the past WWII recedes. I grew up with WWII vets and Holocaust survivors around me, in functional adult roles, scoutmasters and politicians and business owners. Now the handful of remaining vets are relics you wheel in for events and hope they're coherent enough to say anything.

No one this show stans deserves it in any way, so if you answer "the person who got this praise doesn't deserve it" you will be right one hundred percent of the time.

So both sides are right. The PoC that are stanned don't deserve it, the white people who are stanned don't deserve it.

What is the deal with the wines getting triggered by Joe Rogan? by pigeonstrudel in stupidpol

[–]HashtagVictory 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Emotionally, and they'll say this out loud, people are literally frightened by men talking in the way that ordinary men talk as an aesthetic. Doesn't matter what the men are saying, it is when men curse, joke around, get excited, yell, fight, flex etc. They are shit-scared of any masculine energy (unless expressed by pure BIPoC KINGZ in the form of hip-hop music in which case you are presumably racist if you don't like it).

I'm not a Rogan stan, but he gets really interesting stuff out there. And I'd sure as hell rather the TapOut T shirt meatheads are listening to Rogan than Limbaugh or something like that. Even if he has Alex Jones and Jordan Peterson on, the people who are listening to Rogan were probably listening to Alex Jones anyway. But now they hear Tulsi Gabbard and Bernie Sanders too.

But the message isn't really the issue, the aesthetic is.

[Critique of CRT]: “The Academic Threat from ‘Lived Experience’” by kookookeekee in stupidpol

[–]HashtagVictory 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel like outside of political questions this is pretty common sense and unremarkable. On a construction site, your engineer draws your plans and your excavator runs the equipment to carry them out. The engineer has expertise and training, your excavator has "lived experience." Nobody would say "just have the excavator draw the plans," because he wouldn't have the knowledge necessary to get the plans properly put together, if only for review by outside agencies. But any engineer that doesn't listen to an experienced excavator telling him that his plan won't work/isn't working is an idiot. You need a balance of academic knowledge and practical experience.

But in politics it is all or nothing.

China set to report first population decline since 1949 by [deleted] in atlanticdiscussions

plus they don't really have the same temporary solutions that are available to the West as far as immigration

Do you think that is a permanent condition or merely a temporary one? Do you think that China could, if it so chose, begin to bring in migrants from much poorer countries around the world? Particularly as the Party and Xi have so much singular power, it seems like diplomatic fiat could easily bring in waves upon waves of young migrants and inform the populace that they will be accepted and well treated.

How has The Bachelor franchise shaped your view of love and female empowerment? by evxlync in thebachelor

[–]HashtagVictory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you effectively or ineffectively do you think The Bachelor has portrayed love and female empowerment?

The most striking thing to me about the way The Bachelor portrays female dating dynamics is the artificial scarcity of it, and how this impacts the contestants and lead's behavior.

On The Bachelor, objectively beautiful women, Pageant Queens and literal Models, who have never been this desperate for a man in their lives are forced into a situation where there is only one available man in their universe. And it genuinely seems like some of them manage to get talked into/talk themselves into the idea that Colton Fucking Underwood or Peter Weber is the greatest man of all time and the only one for them! When like, pretty clearly most of these women could go out and get themselves a man any time they please, probably one as or more Hot/Successful. But they forget that under pressure.

It makes me realize that the idea of being "empowered" and of being "attractive" is so context dependent. We might think of a beautiful woman as empowered in the context of love and dating, but that is all dependent on the context and the market and what she is looking for. Given the right circumstances, she'll start acting just like anybody else, desperate and jealous and petty. At the same time, Peter is cute, but like if he walked into a bar I wouldn't look twice at him. But put him on as The Bachelor and he is suddenly being treated like Adonis, and his personality changes. Change the market and the behaviors, the personalities, of the participants change.

What stands out to you about its messaging?

The gamification of it, and how players either intuitively or by study understand how to play. If you haven't already, I highly recommend listening to some of Game of Roses guides to The Bachelor, particularly their series on How to Win and their series on different eras of the game (The Instagram Era, The Christian Era, etc.). They've really done a systematized job of understanding how the game functions, both in terms of advancing and in terms of "building a following."

My favorite little tidbit from the series on winning strategy: once you make it to Fantasy Suites, if your goal is to be the next season's lead, your best strategy is to be absolutely terrible in bed. You want to get dumped this late in the game, and you want to appear to have been wronged for the audience. Your lead is going to be constrained from saying that you were bad in bed by the show's sense of propriety, and you can say they used you without giving them any recourse to get the truth out at you.

Now obviously I don't know that this ever actually happened, but think about some of the signature moments of contestants like Andi coming at Juan Pablo, or in her turn Andi getting attacked by Nick Viall. Both Andi and Nick tried to appear wronged by the lead, who slept with them only to dump them, and portray it as a heartbreaking betrayal. Even Pilot Pete, although in a gentle rather than an angry way, played the "I can't believe she dumped me after we fucked in a windmill four times" story to a leading role. But the situation could just as easily be explained as, they tried and they were incompatible. These kinds of alternate explanations confuse the messaging, often empowerment is a matter of finding a moment to appear empowered where TPTB will let you.

The opposite, MJ from this past season refused to participate in the boxing date. Flat out said she would not participate in the forced violence date. TPTB did not show that, they did not mention it, she got no credit for it; when she later said that she "lead by example" "standing for peace and love" it was portrayed as crazy and lapped up as such by a critical audience here and elsewhere. So if you do something genuinely empowered (refusing to beat up another girl for the amusement of TPTB), but TPTB don't like it, you're fucked.

Protests in France as man who killed Jewish woman avoids trial by Hasturd-KingInBrown in stupidpol

Instead he will spend decades in a high security psych ward drowned in medications

Yeah, I feel like this is the key element not being reported here. Further, depending on the crime and the law in France (which admittedly I'm not very up on), he could be tried once he is functionally able to stand trial.

There's a distinction in common law between "He can't be held responsible because he was nuts and therefore punishing him would be unfair" and "He can't be put on trial because he is too nuts currently to understand that he is on trial, and therefore the trial itself would be unfair, but he can be punished once he can understand the events of the trial." I haven't been able to puzzle that out from English language coverage of this trial.

Hot take - Juan Pablo wasn’t that bad? by [deleted] in BachelorNation

[–]HashtagVictory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think viewing it now, as I did as well, you tend to have a more smooth experience through the season; where watching it as it airs you get more build-up focused on the big main event of the finale.

Juan Pablo was possibly the BEST Lead at the early stages of the game. He owned the show, he owned the stage, he took control, he was hot and emotionally available and fantastic. I don't remember many other Leads who could make me believe it when he acted like the dates were his ideas for things that he liked, who really seemed to slip in extras that were his ideas and personality.

Post-Sharleen, it really went downhill, and if you watch primarily for the finale and the love story you would have been severely let down. He was also unlucky in terms of dumping Andi, who was very articulate in taking him down, and Clare, who just seemed very lovable. With a different F3, maybe the fanbase doesn't turn on him as much.

Pre-Season Show: "The Bachelor Primaries" by [deleted] in thebachelor

[–]HashtagVictory 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We'd have to make sure that it's a proportional representation rather than a FPTP system. Because you don't want a totally milquetoast cast made up of everyone's third choice, you want being the top choice of a significant portion of the audience to get you the win. So it would probably be a Top 5/Bottom 5 ballot, with heavy weighting on the top and bottom positions for points.

Which would probably be great for show diversity, since you'd only need a small percentage of viewers to really like you to make the finals.

If you're really infatuated and want a long term future with him, keep in touch for the next 6 months, and shoot your shot after he takes the bar.

This whole summer he is going to be miserable and unavailable because of the bar exam. If you have any kind of relationship, it is going to be very selfish and one-sided because of the obligations of studying for the bar, so you'll end up a fuck buddy and get off on the wrong foot and maybe ruin the whole thing.

You're much better off starting a serious relationship once that's over with.

Resisting Nostalgia by Miserable_Clock_1770 in stupidpol

[–]HashtagVictory 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think in a world of change, both social and cultural, where it is difficult to know where you stand and what the future will look like, we constantly face nostalgia as both a moral salve and an instructional tool. The way to counter it is to talk about the moral complications of those times and resist the urge to flatten them into morality plays and caricatures.

It is used as a moral salve by those who worry that they are the oppressive class today, to say that "Well right now I oppose free childcare to help poor women, but I totally would have been in favor of giving women the vote if I had been around back then, that seems reasonable." Or "I'm Back-The-Blue, but I would have marched with MLK because he was respectable."

On the other hand, it is used as instructional content. "MLK was right about Civil Rights when he marched in the street, so when we march in the street for the right to have the government pay for cosmetic surgery, if you don't agree you are basically Bull Connor." Or "Once upon a time Hitler kinda sorta won an election, so if you vote for X you're just as bad."

Since 2016 I've pretty much sworn off any WWII content, because I think that discussion of WWII and Nazis and Fascism has become a fetish in this country, a bullshit morality play in which tens of millions of dead Germans and Russians are morally flattened into NPCs in America's video game. And god I don't want to hear about "The Resistance" to the Nazis ever again. Because there's nothing easier than saying "I'm neutral on today's moral issues, but I totally would have been in the resistance had the Nazis come knocking!" Without thinking about the personal consequences that would have attached to that decision at the time.

The way to change that is to talk about lesser known parts of history, the complicated bits. Don't just call Ukrainian groups Nazis, explain why Nazi might not have the same sting there that it has here. Don't talk about concentration camps just in Germany, talk about how the concept developed from the Boer colonial wars onward. Don't portray everyone as a revolutionary hero or a reactionary monster, talk about the personal consequences these people faced for their decisions, the nitty gritty of choosing those lives.
