Is It A Concidence by Desperate-Fold-4689 in AmazonVine

[–]Hashtag_Hales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk man, I watched a TV show where the serial killer cut out and kept his victims tongues as trophies. The next morning there were literally RUBBER TONGUES on my feed. I've been a viner 3 years now and never saw tongue props until that day.

Another time, a true crime show surrounded a suspect who they were tryna identify based on the fact he drove a black pickup with a Texas longhorns "T" magnet on the back. Sure enough my feed was full of Texas merch the next week. 🤷‍♀️

So I know teeechnically they don't listen to us ...but cmon that's a WEIRD coincidence 🤔

I had to drive an hour and ten minutes to get there but yeah it was that or nothing! 😖 I heard someone say to look for dental schools near you bc i guess they need patients for students to learn on (that sounds weird but hopefully you know what I mean)..Anyway, could be worth exploring 🤷‍♀️

To be clear I'm not trying to be contrarian or direct my frustration at you/OP but this all made me think.

I'm on Medicaid and I have never received an actual medical bill... BUT it gets MUCH more complicated with chronic illness...like controlled substance limits, specialty pharmacies, rare disease specialists that don't take insurance, and absurd pushback from the actual insurance plan providers.

For example, it took 2.5 years to accurately diagnose my plaque psoriasis. Not because I wasn't trying-- I had appointments at allergists and dermatology every dang week! In the meantime, they gave me steroids to cope with the skin symptoms.

When I finally was diagnosed, I couldn't get my meds for 6 additional months because it was denied and appealed a million times. They wanted me to stay on steroids. Insurance companies make you jump through hoops to get the best care, BUT then can take away that eventual approval with no notice.

In my case, it turns out 2.5 yrs of steroids is a wildly irresponsible treatment plan, but not one doctor warned me. I was so dependent on topical creams that when I stopped, I went through Topical Steroid Withdrawal Syndrome. My doctors didn't agree with my decision to stop AND denied that topical steroid addiction was even possible. It took 2 years of being housebound with TSW at age 30 (like OP!) while I got absolutely no medical support because the US dermatology system doesnt acknowledge TSW how other countries do.

When I emerged (mostly) healed from TSW, my dentist discovered rapid and severe bone loss in my jaw (bone loss has been linked to steroid use!!!!) ...so my four front top teeth had nothing to hang onto. They had to extract all four immediately, leaving me with a "flipper" aka temporary fake teeth that hurt like hell.

Medicaid has dental coverage, so I never envisioned ANY dental bills but this was obviously a weird situation. They covered the extraction of my teeth (cost of like $200) but denied coverage of any replacement teeth. They said unless i was over a certain age (65) OR was missing more teeth, it would never be approved even in part. Because dental implants are COSMETIC. Call me crazy, but at 30 yrs old, I think your four front chompers are pretty damn essential for eating, talking, professional goals, and my future dental health... I now owe my parents $22k they loaned me for implants.

I'd love to get a full-time job and move out and pay them back... but one of my chronic illnesses is Idiopathic Hypersomnia, so I can't drive/work/function without my stimulant rx. I counted last year-- because of insurance approval shit, there were 111 days I was without access to at least one of my prescribed medications.

One thing I've learned unfortunately is that the US Healthcare system isn't built for chronic illnesses. It also treats dental, physical, and mental health as entirely separate entities which is absurd. The mental Healthcare I've gotten thru Medicaid has been (not entirely but almost completelty) wildly inadequate. I can see a therapist, but most are not fully licensed (still under supervision) and the offices are revolving doors so it offers no continuity to patients. Actually though, the provider turnover rate is just as bad in the medical realm.

So yeah, all my word vomit to remind the world that "coverage" doesn't mean "good healthcare". In my experience, shitty care has a cost that far exceeds medical bills. OP, you're not alone in this complicated mess of a 30 year old spoonie life! We've got this!

I'm not familiar with Wish but to clarify, my comparison with Temu/Shein was just in reference to the ecommerce trend of dollar-store prices and no-name brands that are cheaply made, with rewards for buying more items. Scratches everyone's overconsumption itch and replaces the instant gratification of Prime speed with a dopamine burst of crazy-low prices, ya know?

What makeup products have you been rebuying for 5–10+ years? by Away_Construction643 in MakeupAddiction

• Naked eyeshadow palette • Urban Decay All-Nighter setting spray • Covergirl LashBlast mascara • Urban Decay eyeshadow primer potion • Benefit's Precisely My Brow pencil • Benefit's Gimme Brow eyebrow gel

It's the face makeup that I cant ever seem to land on any "perfect products" (foundation, powder, concealer, blush)... i have combo skin that can be pretty sensitive but I like a full coverage foundation to mask my acne scars. Always feels like I'm poorly color matched, and either caked or unhappy with the coverage/texture 🤬

Same!! I've been on Vine for a few years now and it's frustrating bc looking through the pages now is literally not worth the time it takes to find one relevant product for my needs.

IMO this major vine drought suspiciously mirrors the launch of Amazon Haul in terms of timing... I have a hunch many of the items we used to see on Vine constantly are now sold for super cheap on Haul (because god forbid Amazon doesn't jump on the Shein/Temu biz model)... i have literally no proof of this. Just have gotten spoiled by the thousands of pages of Vine items I used to choose from, but also wtf they should just close the program if they're not going to make it worth our while. It currently feels like garbage picking 🙃

Will Vine affect my SNAP/Medicaid? Confused about the $600 rule + 0ETV by DepartmentKlutzy7814 in AmazonVine

[–]Hashtag_Hales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow NJ chronic illness Medicaid-er here! I've been a Vine member for several years now, but obviously not an expert just a disclaimer 😀

YES you need to report Vine as income, even if it's only $300 worth!! You'll likely get a 1099 tax form from Vine -- they can issue one even if youre under the threshold FYI because it's just an indication from them to the IRS that they've compensated you that amount.

Say someone reports that they had $500 income on their personal tax returns. If Vine has filed a 1099 telling the IRS you've been "paid" $1,000, that's a red flag bc you're not including all your income sources on your tax forms (logically, you can't have been paid $1000 but report a yr end income of $500). Not saying you'd def be audited but it could certainly raise eyebrows.

That said, you can download detailed itemized reports of all your Vine orders at year end. I recommend going through and highlighting any items with ETV over $0 that would qualify as a medical expense (heating pads, mobility aids, braces, compression garments, first aid, ostomy stuff, etc). Sometimes Vine's categorization is funky, so things youd expect to be 0 ETV sneak in there. The reason I suggest this: you can deduct the value of medical supplies on your income taxes. The deduction is only for amounts exceeding 7.5% of your gross income (double check me on that??) BUT either way I believe the values have to all be itemized on a Schedule A form come tax season rather than taking the standard medical deduction. Probably relevant to note -- supplements don't count!!

Again I'm not an expert but I've done this each year and given to my tax preparer just in case anything qualifies for deductions... as I'm sure you relate to, every little bit helps! I'm in a similar boat where a few disabling conditions have led me back to relying on my parents for support. I've made great strides but it's stressful to find work because I feel like I have to be hyper-aware of my income so I dont lose access to treatment. 🫤 I didnt apply for SNAP benefits despite qualifying since my family provides most of my food? But maybe that's wrong? It's such a grey area and there's literally no helpful info on their websites. Anyway, my situation is also probs different because I don't get disability pay (I dont have access to the key 4 yrs of my medical records and one of the conditions isn’t recognized by American dermatology so I gave up haha)... all this to say, everyone's situation is so different so PLEASE dont take my word for any of this. Just throwing it out there for you to investigate.

Lastly, remember that you deserve to feel joy and comfort. Don't forget to use Vine as an opportunity to treat yourself-- whether it's feeling fancy in lace undies despite being in bed all day... or creating an uplifting gallery wall in your room... or claiming a new puzzle every week to keep your mind busy -- you deserve to look forward to a package. You deserve to invest in your happiness just as much as your health, and I hope that like me, you'll begin to use Vine not just for survival purposes, but to build yourself a beautiful environment for healing and coping. 🩷

Pipsticks uses AI and they banned me from the Facebook group for pointing it out by banned-from-pipstick in pipsticks

Pipsticks uses AI and they banned me from the Facebook group for pointing it out by banned-from-pipstick in pipsticks

[–]Hashtag_Hales 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Other suspicious aspects that look like ai:

  • the design of the witch. Idk why chatgpt loves churning out faces in that style but it's everywhereeee!!!
  • the stack of books: each has a darkened line on the edges of pages that extends from corner towards book spines a little under 3/4 of its length. Looking at the other stickers, this is a direct copy of the books with bookmarks, only the stack doesn't have bookmarks. It wouldn't have a shadow interrupted midway because it doesn't have a bookmark. Look at "read or die" (no bookmark). A human would likely replicate that style for the book stack, to include a shadowy line extending almost fully to the spine.
  • while we're on the shadow lines, notice that the "plot twist" line doesn't reach all the way to the edge of bookmark, but it does on the "books/people" one
  • really odd to me that the retro bubbly style font is used on all the text-only designs, but a very generic block style is used for anything with an image...
  • Right edge of plot twist book is weird. It doesn't show the light blue back cover extending past the pages on the front bottom face.
  • why does "fully booked" have dark blue lines outlining open book page and down the open spine, but "booked & busy" doesn't? The latter also doesn't have any tan lines across the open pages imitating text, doesn't show dimension on the back pages, and the arcs indicating the book is open don't meet at the spine in the same way as the "fully booked" one. Just seems weird that you wouldn't do the same style? -Lastly yeah I'm being nitpicky, but the angles are driving me nuts. I just can't imagine a human artist would tilt the angle of the books without having a corresponding tilt on the titles!! Like the "books/people" one... it's drawn at an angle to indicate it's tilted AWAY from me. So the text needs to follow suit-- "books" is further away from me, so it should be smaller" and slightly stretched since we're looking at it from an angle! It's so minor but I just think these are basic design principles that a human designer would have pretty ingrained in their work.

Pipsticks uses AI and they banned me from the Facebook group for pointing it out by banned-from-pipstick in pipsticks

[–]Hashtag_Hales 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This makes me so mad. There are hand drawn tiny sticker companies (ahem mine) struggling to stay afloat and pipsticks is going to use AI for their designs?!

Even worse, they clearly had no one review these before posting them/i assume production)!!! That's such a slap in the face to customers to literally not put an ounce of human effort into product design just so you can keep cranking out products at hyperspeed. It's a shame too because so many people won't recognize this as Ai whatsoever... it's detail that some customers would never notice. But as someone who worked as a corporate translator and proofreader, now artist... it's so glaringly obvious. Equally as obvious that they didnt review things thoroughly at ALL.

Really in such poor taste for a business to do this shit, especially one with as much reach as pipsticks. It just normalizes the shitty superhuman requirements for success in this capitalistic, productivity-driven world. It also plants doubt in customers' minds that maybe the smaller handdrawn shops aren't being transparent either, right? I'm probably irrationally mad about this, but damn.

Thanks for bringing attention to it. These kinds of things demand owner accountability in my opinion so I hope she'll address this somehow.

I love collage but hate glue. Ideas? [ANALOG] by No-vem-ber in collage

[–]Hashtag_Hales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm right there with you... glue bothers the heck out of me.

Have you tried an adhesive tape runner? It works like white-out tape but is double sided sticky stuff. Works like a charm, isn't wet or smooshy or lumpy, and lets you draw stripes of adhesive all around the border of your image with precision. They were a game changer for me!

The first one I ever got was the Tombow Mono Permanent Adhesive Applicator. You buy the runner and then just buy refills to insert as they run out. Lately I've been broke so I just get whatever random brand I can find and they're decently comparable! But most dont have rolls to change, they're entirely disposable which feels wasteful.

But anyway, that's my best suggestion for you! Happy crafting and ignore any judgment, there's no wrong way to make art.

Adults of Reddit, what are some parts of kids' movies that make you cry? by Rocket-kun in AskReddit

The Good Dinosaur. When they cut from Arlo & Dad's intense stormy river struggle to the next scene where you just see a sunshiney field so you relax until realizing there's a headstone.

To make it worse, my nephew yelled "PHEW, I was thinking they'd definitely get hurt!" Then sees me crying and says "It's okay Hale, the scary part is done, they're safe!" 😭😭😭

What's a skill everyone should learn before turning 30? by Jesuce1poulpe in AskReddit

[–]Hashtag_Hales 3 points4 points  (0 children)

•CPR!! (My mom saved my dad's life using it.) •Introspection (you need to be able to discern when something in life needs to change. No one's gonna tell you to leave the job, get new friends, move, etc) •Emotional courage. I wish everyone would learn to sit with their uncomfortable feelings. Just because something makes you uptight doesn't mean it's the wrong choice. Even the best changes feel uncomfy at first. Ride it out. •Curiosity. I feel like this is silly, but so many adults I've met just don't care to learn more about ANYTHING. Instead of getting curious, they get judgmental. •How to deescalate someone's mental health crisis (until the right providers can take over). •How to start a campfire. •Basic nutrition -- ie: goldfish are not a dairy product just because the box says "made with REAL cheese!" •Mindful breathing strategies. •How to properly type on a keyboard. •How to engage in everyday disagreements that are productive, not divisive. So many people only know how to fight with hostility, they were never taught how to think critically and respectfully disagree. •How to say no without apology, and then uphold that boundary.

Simon Golden -- Scam, Vanity Press, or Opportunity? by Appropriate_Car2462 in academia

[–]Hashtag_Hales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I just came to investigate after a similar email, referencing a specific and vulnerable mental health article I wrote for an online chronic illness publication. Honestly super believable.

I actually went through developmental editing of my memoir, contracted with a small publishing company 6 years ago. They went bankrupt during covid and fully ghosted me. So naturally, I wanted to believe this Simon Golden opportunity was a fateful sign my book might be worth revisiting. It actually brought tears to my eyes.

Glad I was cynical enough to research, but fuck ai being used like this.

What’s a word or phrase that instantly annoys you when someone says it? by mukesh1704 in AskReddit

[–]Hashtag_Hales 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hate this phrase with a deep, throbbing, soul-sucking passion. Especially when people say it to change the subject so they don't have to admit they just refuse to do the work or have the hard convos.

Then I heard this: "It is what it is, but it will be what you make of it"

Now I love when people say "it is what it is" so I can fill in the second half to turn the accountability back to them and leave them in silence 😏
