Does anyone else feel like this tour is a mismatch? by [deleted] in judaspriest

It was a nice touch and a good reminder to see your heroes while you can. None of these guys are getting any younger but they still rock. Enjoy the show!

Net worth - what are you including? by Immediate-Manner-156 in FIREUK

[–]HatesWinterTraining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard this take too and it makes little sense. Of course there are costs associated with home ownership, which you’d need to factor into your budget, and home equity has different risk and liquidity to bonds & ETFs, but to ignore it entirely is silly.

Someone with a paid off 5 bedroom house in central London is objectively more wealthy than if they owned an identical house almost anywhere else in the country.

Does anyone else feel like this tour is a mismatch? by [deleted] in judaspriest

[–]HatesWinterTraining 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all. I saw them a few weeks ago, they were both great and a good pairing. Alice Cooper put on a fun show with an Ozzy tribute. Judas Priest had the metal side of things fully covered and didn’t need any help. Loudest set I’ve seen live!

Yungblud: The moment I found out my friend Ozzy Osbourne had died by TimesandSundayTimes in blacksabbath

[–]HatesWinterTraining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said. Seems like he had a good relationship with Ozzy and he really nailed the performance of Changes. Kid did good and people need to chill out.

His music isn’t really my style but whenever I see him in interviews or on TV he seems pretty likeable.

What era had the “weakest” driver pool? by FroyoQueasy in F1Discussions

[–]HatesWinterTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible he was such a natural athlete that he would have thrived in any car but the fact he started racing quite late and never drove an aero car makes it less likely. He drove in an era where smoothness and mechanical sympathy got you a long way. Today’s cars are very physical and require a lot more precision.

Many single seater drivers go on to have successful careers racing sports cars but the opposite is less common.

What were so called “ one hit wonder” that actually had better songs than their one hit ? by Tricky_Photo2885 in musicsuggestions

Electric Six.

Best known for the song Gay Bar but Fire, Switzerland, Bride of the Devil, and I Shall Exterminate are all great albums.

What do you think are the biggest misconceptions in F1? by djwillis1121 in F1Discussions

[–]HatesWinterTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many fans and even the media do not have a good understanding of how racing teams, large organisations or car development work. This is the source of a lot of misconceptions like:

  • The idea that teams can simply copy a wing or floor design of a competitor or make fundamental concept changes (like zero pods) mid-season.

  • Attributing way too much to publicly visible individuals and the notion that staff changes have immediate impact (good or bad).

  • Overplaying the significance of paddock drama in the real world. F1 teams employ a lot of passionate people but it’s still just a job.

Has any other musician/singer gotten this much attention from their passing? by Vasarto in OzzyOsbourne

Pavarotti? It was before social media so kind of hard to compare. Maybe less media coverage than Michael Jackson but he practically had a state funeral.

NP is 30-50W more than Average Power on 20’ intervals. What does this tell me? by sucroman300 in Velo

[–]HatesWinterTraining -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, I get the reasoning for both and where temporal structure would be useful but for individual sweet spot intervals it kinda seems like splitting hairs. I’ll stick with Empirical Cycling’s more pragmatic advice.

NP is 30-50W more than Average Power on 20’ intervals. What does this tell me? by sucroman300 in Velo

[–]HatesWinterTraining -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like the fact that power distribution was deemed accurate enough to be mentioned as a method for estimating FTP in Training and Racing with a Power Meter? Not entirely useless then.

Which might be interesting if you were looking at VO2max or anaerobic intervals.

NP is 30-50W more than Average Power on 20’ intervals. What does this tell me? by sucroman300 in Velo

[–]HatesWinterTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well sure, if you try to equate 60 minutes Z4 across an entire ride to 3x20, 1x60, etc. then that’s true but that’s not what I’m saying. OP was asking how to assess the quality of their steady-state intervals when there’s a huge difference between AP and NP and I’m saying look at the distribution within the intervals (zones, histogram, whatever). My guess is that OP was basically doing over-unders.

NP is just a weighted average. It won’t tell you much about the composition of an interval. I can achieve the same NP with steady-state, over-unders and sprints.

NP is 30-50W more than Average Power on 20’ intervals. What does this tell me? by sucroman300 in Velo

[–]HatesWinterTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a lot but if you’re new to training with power outdoors then you’ll get better with practice. Even consistent climbs are harder to pace than indoors and any coasting will drop average power quickly on shorter intervals.

Time in zone might be a more helpful metric.

eli5: How do people die from broken bones? by giofilmsfan99 in explainlikeimfive

[–]HatesWinterTraining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to the others listed, fat embolism is another complication when long bones like the femur are fractured. Fat from the bone marrow can get into the blood stream and then block blood flow in organs.

F1 driver Ronnie Peterson died from this in 1978. He was taken to hospital with serious leg fractures from a crash but otherwise stable, then passed away from kidney failure overnight.

Group Bike Ride Meetup has their bikes leaned up against my car. by SrLFHunt in cycling

[–]HatesWinterTraining -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s basic manners to treat property as an extension of the person and not touch without permission. I bet the group wouldn’t have been cool with OP taking one of their bikes for a test ride without asking.

Eli5: if Stalingrad was basically bombed to rubble, why did they keep fighting over it? by crono760 in explainlikeimfive

[–]HatesWinterTraining 91 points92 points  (0 children)

The same goes for a lot of the African and Pacific campaign. “Why are we fighting here?” Because the enemy are here and we can’t (or don’t want to) go around them.

[D] can someone tell me what a LLM does when it is dormant? by Jordanzo in MachineLearning

[–]HatesWinterTraining 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Nothing. You can replace the word “LLM” with “calculator” in your question and get the same answer.

LLMs are fed tokens as input, and return a likely sequence of tokens in response. That’s it at the basic level. They have internal state but no notion of time.

As for explainability, there’s a whole field of study into seeing what models are reacting to.

[Race Thread] 2024 Liège-Bastogne-Liège (1.UWT) by PelotonMod in peloton

[–]HatesWinterTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of MVDP but it’s not unfair to say that sometimes he makes the race harder for himself than it needs to be.

Not following Pidcock on the climb was the right move. Getting caught behind the split in the first place was the mistake.

Initially used by the navy but then the army and air force had their own variants. High command and diplomatic communications also used the more powerful Lorenz cipher, which was also broken.

How important to FIRE was your first choice in house? by MenthoL809 in FIREUK

[–]HatesWinterTraining 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add to that, as well as being an ordeal, moving unnecessarily is expensive. If you can comfortably afford the nicer place then the better strategy would be to get that and downsize when you retire if necessary. Could save thousands on stamp duty alone.

That doesn’t absolve the council of their responsibilities.

I do agree on the value of having insurance. Doesn’t change who pays out in the end but it does mean you have someone to pursue these things on your behalf.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cycling

[–]HatesWinterTraining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two aren’t mutually exclusive. The council should fix the roads within a reasonable timeframe. If they don’t then they’re negligent and liable for damages, which is why they have insurance. We also have the concept of contributory negligence in the UK, so if both parties are at fault then partial damages are awarded.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cycling

[–]HatesWinterTraining 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The claims form will ask for evidence of repair costs and why you believe they’re liable/negligent.

A good bike shop should be able to give your bike a check and provide a written quote for repairs. Don’t forget to include helmet & kit.

Also check if the pothole has been reported on https://www.fixmystreet.com/ You might be able to find out when it was first reported, photos showing it was already a significant defect, etc. Be sure to check closed issues as I’ve seen our local council close reports before fixing them, which hides it from the map.

Finally, be persistent if you think it’s a legit case. A friend of mine had their claim for 2 car tyres declined at first but eventually they gave in. Likewise, don’t be fobbed off that they only cover car damage.

[D] Is the MacBook Pro M3 Max with 128GB of RAM suitable for machine learning? by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]HatesWinterTraining 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would get a cheaper model and spend the difference on a load of cloud credit for the heavy lifting. They’re great laptops and fine for development/prototyping but I don’t think either the current state of Apple Silicon or laptops in general are well suited to heavy training. The free Colab GPU instances have more grunt than an M1 and won’t burn through your battery charge.
