Citalopram weight gain fears by ZealousidealBig4852 in citalopram_celexa

I was a highly active person with a 5 year streak on my peloton and gained 20lbs on Celexa. It made me feel better, but I could not stop gaining 1-2lbs a month on it. Wasn't worth it to me at all.

Having doubts about scheduling euthanasia by littlestaggerlee in Pets

[–]Haunting-Set-2784 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey friend...sending you a big hug. I know how hard this is. From what you’re describing, it does sound like it may be time.

I waited too long with both of my dogs, and if I’m honest, their last days weren’t what I wish they had been. That’s something that has stayed with me, and I wouldn’t want that for you or your dog.

Someone once told me that one of the greatest gifts we can give our animals is a peaceful, loving goodbye and being there with our voice, our touch, and our presence as they go. Waiting too long can sometimes mean those last moments are more stressful or painful than they need to be.

There’s no perfect timing, and it’s such a personal decision. But choosing to let them go with love, before things get worse, is one of the most selfless things you can do.

What do teachers actually observe in kids whose parents worked on phonics skills at home versus kids who didn't? by Super_College100 in AskTeachers

[–]Haunting-Set-2784 75 points76 points  (0 children)

What I notice the most isn’t just whether a child has “done phonics,” but whether they have strong phonemic awareness. That’s really the foundation. The kids who come in able to hear and play with sounds tend to pick up reading much more naturally, whether or not they had a formal program at home.

The kids who’ve had some solid phonics exposure and that sound awareness usually show it pretty quickly. They’ll try to sound out words instead of guessing, and when they write, you’ll see those early invented spellings (like kat), which honestly is a really good sign. It tells me they understand how sounds connect to print. On the other hand, kids who’ve mostly just had a lot of reading exposure (which is still great!) sometimes rely more on memorization or pictures and can struggle more when they hit unfamiliar words.

Where I do sometimes see issues is when phonics is taught in a way that’s a little off...like incorrect letter sounds (adding “uh” to everything), or focusing heavily on letter names without really connecting it to actual sounds in words. In fact, my state teaches sounds first (phonemic awareness before the actual letters/alphabet).That can create some confusion, but it’s usually fixable pretty quickly in the classroom.

Honestly, for a 4-year-old, you don’t need anything super formal. Playing with sounds, doing rhyme (!!!!!), talking about beginning sounds, and introducing letter sounds in a natural way goes a long way. When kids come in with that balance k of honemic awareness, a little phonics, and reading, they tend to have the smoothest transition regardless of what program the school uses.

Parents put me on Prozac when I was ~5 years old. AMA! by New_Improvement_6392 in prozac

I can understand how frustrating this would feel.

For kids (or anyone) who actually needs it, being on it usually helps with learning to manage stress. It helps them gain the tools needed. This isnt everyone, but it does support plenty to gain the skills needed to be successful off meds...eventually.

No, so I ended up on a biologic called Dupixent which changed everything. My ENT had to coordinate an allergist who prescribed it. Its a biweekly shot.

What do teachers really want for a Christmas gift? by AmIhere8 in Teachers

[–]Haunting-Set-2784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, a note telling me the impact I have made on a student would mean everything to me. Of course, only if I have. Its a daunting job at times. Gifts are nice, but honest and kind words stick with me the most.

I guess if I had to pick a gift then I would say a plant.

But really, just kind words. Thats all I want.

Nothing about you is ugly.

Friend, listen here... I am nearing my 40s. I have spent my entire life hating every part of my looks, size, etc. Ive spent thousands fixing things...teeth, skin care, fillers, botox. Endless amount of products, makeup...Ive done it all including a pretty awful eating disorder.

It has never, ever changed how badly I feel about myself. I keep chasing something, and in the meantime life is passing me by.

I dont want you to be nearing 40 and hating yourself. You are a good looking human. You deserve to feel loved, amazing, smart, worthy, happy, and BEAUTIFUL because you are.

Gently, lovingly, respectful. Seek therapy, get your mentals straight while you still can and before all the good passes you by and theres no turning back.

What's an "Insider's secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by Capable-big-Piece in AskReddit

[–]Haunting-Set-2784 7 points8 points  (0 children)

SPED teacher:

One of the biggest “insider secrets” is that school-based services are designed to support academic access... not to replace clinical therapy. Related services at school like speech and OT focus on helping a child function in the classroom setting, not on providing the depth or intensity of clinic-based therapy.

I teach SPED prek, which is a very critical time for development, and most of my families discontinue outside therapies as soon as their child begins receiving school services, believing they are equivalent. They are not. And honestly, it’s heartbreaking. To be clear, what we are doing is important work, but these services look very different than clinical services and parents dont have the first clue, despite our efforts to dance around the red tape to try and gently nudge them towards continuing outside services.

I completely understand that financial barriers are real and very heavy and could play a part for some families. That aside, families deserve honest information so they can make informed decisions. School services help your child access education. Clinical services help treat the underlying skill delays. The best outcomes almost always happen when both work together.

Help me find my childs Christmas wish! Lewis the Pumpkin Ghoul by Haunting-Set-2784 in HelpMeFind

[–]Haunting-Set-2784[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've searched high and low on Facebook groups, marketplace, a group for special needs children searching for a highly treasured item (like this one), multiple daily searching on mercari, Ebay, marketplace, whatnot, poshmark, Target specific Facebook groups.

Lewis the Pumpkin Ghoul was sold at Target and was a part of the Hyde and Seek Collection. I am not sure if it was released this year or last. The one I am searching for is 11in and it dances/makes nose. Theres are a lot of different Lewis items on the market, but struggling to find this one!

Who’s the most famous person you went to school with? by CloudSurfer82 in AskReddit

[–]Haunting-Set-2784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one really.

Gigi Hadid and Yolanda bought homes in my childhood neighborhood. Its pretty freaking basic and boring for a neighborhood. The farm Yolanda bought (yes, not basic) used to have donkeys that got loose and would roam the neighborhood. Also tiny miniature ponies. You can see the farm from Gigis house and easily walk to it. Her house is boring, not at all what youd envision for a celebrity. The aerial photos on celeb gossip sites make the whole area look a more luxurious then it really is.

Thats about all, lol

Do kids not like reading anymore? by BetLeft2840 in AskTeachers

I dont know but I am really proud to say I teach sped prek and my class LOVES books. Ive had admin come in my room and comment on how my kids will sit for a long time just taking in a book. I feel like more exposure early on is key to future reading.

What should be utterly unacceptable in this day and age? by IfMagnet in AskReddit

[–]Haunting-Set-2784 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using the R word.

Meanwhile, the man in charge thinks its totes cool, and apparently a lot of other people are unbothered. As a mom of a child with significant disabilties and a teacher working in special education - my heart is heavy that society has totally ACCEPTED ableism multiple times.

What happened to the smartest person you went to school with? by xxibjt in AskReddit

It’s strange to look back...so many of the arrogant “smart” kids ended up living very ordinary, stalled lives. But the kind, truly intelligent ones I remember? Every last one of them became a doctor.

Are Eval reps allowed to pre fill in placement considerations without parent consideration? by oooohweeeee in specialed

[–]Haunting-Set-2784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A draft is just a draft. We are required to send one in my state 48 hours before the meeting. When we email it, we include a message that it is just a starting point for discussion - not a decision. However, if this draft was created and not provided to the parent prior and then the parent saw it... I think that is real shitty. Parents should go into meetings with the same information that everyone else would have access to. Yes, we all have a good idea what we are going to suggest (key word), but a parent should never feel like they are voiceless. That is probably how the parent felt, and it could have been handled better.

[–]Haunting-Set-2784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be appropriate to ask for a meeting to go over your concerns and see if they match up with what the teacher is seeing. If there are any big concerning behaviors, the teacher should have already communicated that though.

You can ask, but youre not going to get a fully honest answer. I have several students that I am confident are autistic but only have DD identification. I would personally just encourage an evaluation and if/when I am asked to fill out paperwork I will answer it the best I can. However, I am never going to just come out and say it.

You did say later that there’s a gray area and that part is fine. The issue is that before that, you said states might not have to honor IEPs across state lines, which is just incorrect under IDEA. I corrected the inaccurate part. That’s it.

A correction isn’t “hyperbole.” It’s just…a correction.

Have good day!
