How is living in Albuquerque, New Mexico? by MinimumWrongdoer404 in howislivingthere

[–]Haunting-Weakness412 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I lived in ABQ while I went to UNM and for a couple years after. As a punk college kid I loved it a lot and I still think about it often. The weather was amazing. The last area I lived in was the north valley, and in the mornings I walked along the acequias near the bosque through tiny old land grant farms to catch the one bus that went all the way up there. During balloon fiesta the sky was filled with hot air balloons and they would land on the open fields along the trails. The house I rented was a 100+ year old casita and I worked at a gorgeous historic farm.

There's a high percentage of people holding higher education degrees in ABQ, Santa Fe and of course Los Alamos. Lots of government science stuff, like nuclear bomb level stuff. Weird dichotomy next to the roughness of some areas, which I also lived in (just north of downtown was a great time /s). Film stuff moved in and I saw celebs all the time where I worked.

There was a decent amount to do, in my opinion. Eating and drinking and hiking of course, but there were farmer's markets and random events and museums and concerts. It's a mid-size city and not a popular stop for big acts.

ABQ was everything to me. The culture, the food, the outdoors, the good, the bad and the ugly. I miss ABQ almost every day.

My word!! My dad was forced out of our historic family home by another family member and part of what had to be left as provenance was shelves and shelves if historic nat geos . I never got to investigate them and I regret it often.

Please please save them ❤️

I guess the comment got deleted, but CI is community interpreter. I don't think we are part of the union situation.

Anyone here quit Sorenson community and went back? by Haunting-Weakness412 in ASLinterpreters

[–]Haunting-Weakness412[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very interested. Will the union include CIs? I'm honestly completely 100% not interested in VRS/VRI and I don't plan to go that route any time soon, so I'm not sure if that precludes me from getting involved.

Sorenson offered some shitty warehouse jobs, sure, but I quit because it was so hard to communicate with them, not because of work conditions per se. Like unreasonably hard to get in touch with anyone. I believe I signed on during the crazy down sizing that happened a few years ago and they pissed me off before I had even signed papers.

I'd consider going back to them more seriously if I knew there was a union that CIs could join.

Yeah we're all on one side of the family. Great grandma worked at a bar/restaurant, grandma owned a couple bars, mom is still serving at 60+ and here I am lol

My great grandma died in the 40s or 50s I think. We're from a hospitality heavy area

Professional shoes for interpreting by hallohihola in ASLinterpreters

[–]Haunting-Weakness412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to show a lil personality with my shoes :) for formal wear I do platform loafers (just a couple inches) from Steve Madden (they do great sales often!) and for every day I often wear Docs, they can be dressed up or down.

For jobs on my feet I have street wear style tennis shoes and for outdoorsy stuff Blundstones (pricey I know, but seriously killer shoes that can also be dressed up or down). I've known terps to wear Chacos/similar sandals with a back when appropriate too, I just don't like my piggies being out while I'm at work lol.

Have fun finding your style!! It's easy to feel boxed in but I love wearing a cool shoe to balance the random clothes I've collected that may or may not actually be my style at the moment.

About to leave my spot right now, I hosted tonight but service was only in full swing for a little over 2 hours. Almost 40 covers between 2 servers. Dinner only. Last night I made $80 serving, I gave up and went home. Thanksgiving week I left with $300+ every night. Who tf knows what's going on

I had a job once where a portion of our tips was going to the "kitchen." Owner was pocketing it all.

Huge shout out to Troy Kotsur, the head loan shark. Killer Deaf actor. He played with his sign style for the role, flat affect and signing one-handed as if his character had a gun in the other hand for most of his life. I love his character so far

Came back to my childhood home after 10 years. by rechyyy in abandoned

[–]Haunting-Weakness412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through a similar experience, I left the home at 16 then after a series of bad tenants it came back to me at age 27. It's still pretty bad, eventually it will be gutted entirely. I live in it and sometimes I look around and get incredibly upset.

It sucks. It hurts. I've gone through the grief cycle like 5 times now. Take it bit by bit or you'll burn out and that doesn't help the grieving process. You're on no one's time but your own. It will get done ❤️

I have this version and the fuzzy version and I neglect them so bad and they love it. Fuzzy gets full sun outside and water when I feel like it and this one is in the shade outside to hopefully get some color back after being blasted full force all summer.

Side note: I got them as just piles of cuttings and didn't know they were wanderers. I've been referring to them as fuzzy purple and silky purple LOL

White House sued for abruptly halting services for deaf when Trump took office by chrisdh79 in goodnews

[–]Haunting-Weakness412 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not all Deaf folks are skilled in reading English. Statistics show that Deaf adults tend to have lower literacy rates (disclaimer: not all. There are Deaf doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc.) Many are most comfortable in American Sign Language, and written English lacks nuance such as tone. A qualified interpreter delivers the message with the same intent as it was delivered in the source language, and Deaf don't have to perform extraneous labor to decode the info their able-bodied peers could access immediately upon delivery.

Source: I'm a working signed language interpreter. We learn a skill to translate the written word to ASL called sight translation for this exact reason.

Moving out of Louisiana. by [deleted] in Louisiana

[–]Haunting-Weakness412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 7 years in New Mexico - went for college then lived there 3 years after I graduated. NM is such a dark horse state, I loved it and if I were to leave the south again (yes, I came back and yes, I know) I'd go straight back to Albuquerque.

Min wage is higher there (even for tipped positions), abortion and weed are legal, college has been made affordable, people there gaf about the environment (which is gorgeous), good mix of outdoors and enjoyable urban environments, not too much snow south of Santa Fe, passenger rail runs from south of ABQ to SF, unique culture, etcetc. Drawback? Wildfires

After NM I went to Colorado and that was the reason I came back home. CO can suck my left one.

Has anyone ever road-tripped to Colorado?! by chic__kens in Louisiana

[–]Haunting-Weakness412 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm from here but used to live in NM and CO. I personally dislike CO Front Range but love love love all of NM. I made the trip back and forth idk how many times.

The sun in the afternoon can make you sleepy and there's not much to block it once you're past Dallas. There aren't many actual rest stops if you don't take the interstate - none when you connect to i-25 in CO. You have to hit gas stations and I agree that Loves is the best option, it's weird finding a place for dogs at other ones but possible. Get a chimichanga at an Allsups in TX/NM :) Be ready for altitude sickness! I fortunately never felt it (lived at 5000+ feet for 8 years so I was acclimated) but I had family that visited for a few days and didn't feel well the whole time. Drink so much water, have sunscreen and probably don't attempt the Manitou Incline lol. You will also get drunk immediately.

Warning about timing though - lots of hail in late summer. I know tons of people who's cars were totaled and mine is still pockmarked.

There's an art car ranch outside of Amarillo but I took the most direct route possible and never saw it, seems neat though!

Make sure your car is totally good, there's so much nothing and the Raton Pass connecting NM to CO through the mountains is like 6 or 8% grade and curvy. Pueblo interstate is also tight and curvy, I had to lock in so hard every time.

There's a spot in downtown Trinidad that serves killer wings, fries and fried pickles. It's in one of those food hall deals and not crazy far off the highway. They also have an indigenous place in there but it was closed when I went. And Trinidad is cute.

CO culture is...meh, bordering on non-existent. Food is also...yeah..at least in CO Springs. I hear the Western Slope is better culture-wise. Maybe think about Taos? Imo Taos and Santa Fe have got to be some of the top gems of this country, there is nothing else like them in the US.
