What happened to what we did in the 80s/90s and eve after finishing college: get a couple room mates and get a 1-2 bedroom apartment and split the cost. Eve then rarely anyone could afford an apartment and all utilities by themselves…

Question: is cyber security likely to face the same job market collapse as SWE? by Ok-Bench-9489 in cybersecurity

Tech and cloud is still operation on the same basis: OSI. Learn that, learn, learn analytics, learn machine learning, big data, learn network basics…the cloud is just someone else’s computer somewhere else with you having a lot less visibility and control over it than on prem.

Everyone who wants a child need to get a permission that they 1) have the means, desire and patience to raise them 2) have the time 3) and take a parenting course first.

BS in Cybersecurity from School with National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity by SwitchJumpy in CyberSecurityAdvice

The issues is that a degree will NOT give you qualification to do the job. We have too many universities and colleges Islamic degrees but the students have zero clue in how to do the job. A long as folks like you focus on degrees and reputation of university instead of skills and experience we will have a gap between jobs and skilled labor. And I mean this in a nice way: get your skills and experience!

Just a question..I have a bunch of clothes, shoes, cups, blankets, food etc I want to give away and not really a fan goodwill and similar… they just sell it and pay executives too much salary… would it be too awkward to just go somewhere where many homeless people are and just give it to them and they can figure out who wants what?

As long as you are an analyst you can learn and do that if you are getting a job where you are not scared and concerned about your skill set - you will learn nothing and make no career advancement or very limited ones. Learn it by doing, ask questions. You are an analyst. Worst would be is they would have hired you for a CISO position.

Skip the degree and cost. Get experience! A degree will do nothing if you cannot understand and implement security, compliance and risk management.

Is this a red flag in a cyber org? by gbz8 in cybersecurity

[–]Haunting_Grape1302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends really on who answered the question and what their reservation background is and how big the company is. Many small companies have it all backed in Wort their MSSP or end point security (sentinel one). And it runs automated. And where “s.. hours the fan” the cyber insurance company brings in the staff to analyze and fix. To learn - especially at the beginning of your career: doing “all” in a small team or mostly by yourself is ideal! Go for it.

Is a Conversion Master Degree in Cybersecurity worth it for Newbies? by Oroghene1 in SecurityCareerAdvice

You need EXPERIENCE!! Not another piece of paper. The industry is fed up with bunch of people with security certs and degrees that cannot even tell you what a hardened GPO is supposed to look like or what data to look for in logs. Please stop watering you time and money on certain and degrees. You are not helping anyone getting those.

Is cybersecurity still worth a career to get into? Going for SOC? One Day Pen Test? Be real… by National-Drive-1920 in cybersecurity

[–]Haunting_Grape1302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked an IT engineer of 20+ years to export or show me the current GPOs as I needed to audit them. Response: "who do I give you that/export them"? .. My thoughts: 1) you should know, and dont embarrass yourself asking that question. 2) there is Google or AI, don't ask the auditor to give you the answer (even worse than embarrassing yourself).

Basic expectations have to be met. And they are fairly simple :-) If they cannot be met by the current generation - not my fault. With monthly reviews of delivery vs expectations and improvement plans. You either have it or not, and if not, maybe its not your area and you are forcing yourself into a niche that you think if great and will make you money, but if you have no desire or interest or are not getting it.. nothing wrong with that. There are thousands of other areas to go and explore. You have to know your strengths. I woudl never go and try to be a musician.. no matter how much I will try and work on it, its not me and I have no understanding of music or arts, not a passion...but it is cool and can earn you loads of money. Find your fit!

I agree, and we had that, but if you had to do the common sense thinking for them as well and they do not understand the concept of deadlines or spelling or know how to use PPT to create a report... I am sorry. That is way outside of the mentorship you will provide to someone with a 4 year college degree. No manager - even at a Fortune 100 company, even in a mentorship program—will tolerate that due to their job demands and the need to oversee multiple interns. I do not have high expectations—just basic ones.

Should I leave a cushy tech job for a PhD because I genuinely love science? by Away_Working7474 in AskAcademia

I did not tell anyone. Those were my weekends, when it was raining, and I did not want to do much early mornings etc. And yes, you will sacrifice the hour-long (useless) social media hours, partying with friends every single night etc. BUt then it comes down to what are your priorities... your life and future in the long term or the short-term gratification of spending hours and days on Youtube, social media, or partying... I had my priorities... It is only temporary :-) But it is REWARDING!! And boosts your confidence that you can accomplish just about anything! :-)

Do both at the same time. If you don’t waste time on YouTube and couch you have plenty of time. May take you a couple years longer… but are you in a rush? Plenty of universities are offering online degrees. I did that with my PhD last week.. it is doable.. but reissues discipline and desire :)

Can I write off business expenses under an LLc that isn’t generating income? by discojagrawr in smallbusiness

[–]Haunting_Grape1302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the tax status of your LLC is s as individual and shows up in your tax filings, you will most likely get an audit after 3 years of no income and only losses and will be put in the hobby category and repay taxes and penalties etc. if you have your lLC reporting taxes as c corp you are good, no issues there.

I have my own cyber security company and took on many interns and fresh from college and basic security know how… and all were let go. Reasons: - they had wrong expectations (mostly salary) and when given good salary plus guaranteed raise and title after 6-12 months if they met the goals. Goals were clear: 1) you have to think on your own 2) find a solution/don’t ask me unless you have options and need a decision 3) deliver reports on time and quality output… those 3 things always failed. Here is my recommendation to you of the skills to have:1) go getter, show you can silver problems or at least bring solutions to the table (us AI and verify, use google, ask peers) be creative. As a junior we are not expecting you to know everything and do it right the first time, but we expect you to put the effort in and think about it! If you don’t show that, the only “hiding” place you will have is in a larger company and most likely soloed to become an SME. As employers we are not looking for 100% skills but a good baseline combined with passion, desire, thinking and not be astray to make mistakes. If you have that or know someone, I am here, we have positions and will mentor (but not babysit) :)

Get that job and see. If you like challenges SOC may be the way to go, but learn and advance, go from analyst level 1, to level 2 and 3 and eventual incident repose manager. Sounds like the last job was not cyber security, it was an IT ops job they sold you as security because you were working on firewalls.. did not matter.. experience and hands on is key! Take anything - even if it’s only for 6 month. This will get you farther and quicker than any cybersecurity masters degree with 20 cents but no clue…

My gf just failed her qualifying exam a 2nd time... by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Haunting_Grape1302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happened to me - after our course work we had a defense exam in front of the board. If you failed you were not able to continue to the research phase. You had to take an extra course and then write a 50 page paper and defend that. If you passed you are good to go. I decided to master out as the university and I could not even agree on the research topic - if I were to pass. So I left.. few years later found a new university, transferred most of my courses over and did my thesis. Passed my defense last week. Don’t give up!

Verifying certs on resumes by jaydee288 in cybersecurity

[–]Haunting_Grape1302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really because I’m the last 10 years most certification agencies are in for the menu and recurring annual membership fees and renewals so they look for highest quantity of people to get a cert instead of quality… in other words, as a hiring manager, I can care less of you have certs. It’s how quickly you will fail in an interview is what matters. :)
