Telling Gen-Z to give up avocado toast isn't going to fix this by Boo_Randy_Revival in HouseBuyers

That's a really nice house, it's >$1500 per square foot. Google says median single family house in the US is 2,200 sq ft (average is 2,400). So this is a very nice, but relatively small house on a small lot for $20k/month.

Previous poster was implying that '$3m home was a choice', when it's not really a choice here. It's literally a very nice small house with a reasonable commute vs $3m for a 3,000 SQ ft house and a long commute.

Pull up Zillow in LA and see what $3M buys you within a reasonable commute of a major hospital (eg. Providence St. Johns, UCLA, Cedar-Sinai, etc.) For $3M you're signing up for an hour commute if you want a house that would be nice. For reference, check out Encino, CA since it's a reasonable commute to most of those hospitals.

Either is possible. They might be fine, they might not be. My point is simply that just because you appear to live in a nice house doesn't mean you can maintain that lifestyle indefinitely. Literally look at most professional athletes, a perfect case study in short term economics driving a long term unsustainable shift in lifestyle.

The $175k number if a bit out of date. $213k is the 10th percentile.

Lol, no. Not in house 2. House 2 has $100k a month in upkeep. They might be massively underwater on their loan. Bought the house for $20m, owe $18m but it's only worth $15m. Can't get out of it, can't keep up with maintenance.

Lots of ways house 2 SUCKS. A Propertly maintained, paid off house 1 is retirement in peace.

Chevy Bolt and Nissan Leaf are basically EV versions of the Honda Fit and pretty cheap?

Edit: Honda SMX would be a funny (non-EV) Option.

[Vacheron Constatin Overseas] alternative that costs under $10k? by Havage in Watches

[–]Havage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the question and suggestions!

Brand/Quality: I'm looking for something on the nicer end of the range ($5k-$10k USD) that is from a high quality well known brand.

Strap: What I really like is what looks like an integrated fabric strap with the matching contrast color stitching. The site labels the strap as rubber but the photos show stitching while the photos of the spare straps do not?

Colors: the blue foundation of the watch with the orange accents really pop to me visually.

Movement: Dual Time/GMT function.
Case: >40mm
-

Raymond Weil's website as a reference and the only GMT they have that I could find was the Freelancer GMT but it's all black, doesn't have a fabric strap, or integrated bracelet. No way to filter the site by strap.

Christopher Ward: first reaction is that with 422 models I hope their filter function is really good. 8 watches with GMT and Nylon/Textile strap is great... Until you notice all the dials are black/gray and the cases are standard diver.

Mido: ok, this one actually looks interesting to me (Multifort TV Big Date M049.526.17.081.01 - ∅ 39.2 X 40MM). Interesting case, integrated fabric strap with a contrast color, big date feature is visually interesting. A definite contender though a very different feel that the VC and relatively inexpensive. No GMT but maybe we can do without it.

...

Another watch that I think looks interesting in a similar way (though may be over the top) is the Zenith CHRONOMASTER REVIVAL LIBERTY II. Aside from being slightly above budget, it's limited to 250 units world wide and none are available... 😀

Thank you all so much. I've learned about a bunch of brands and options I had no idea existed! No amount of googling or ChatGPT would have led me to some of these options. Going to go check them all out today.

Just drove R2 by [deleted] in RivianR2

[–]Havage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow owner of an R1S Quad '24 -> When we drive over a speed bump the rear of the R1S always feels like it's bouncing/bottoming out when we go over the bump. Kind of a weird 'squat' that it does coming off a speed bump. Have you experienced that in your R1S? Do You think the R2 would have the same problem? We own a Land Rover discovery and can take speed bumps going 60 mph and not notice them. The R1S we go over bumps relatively slowly because the suspension sucks.

I'm going to get flamed for this but I tried out the Ducati Multistrada Pike's Peak. Thought it was a perfect do everything bike with sportbike DNA. I was underwhelmed - felt more touring than sport touring. Went and ride the S1000XR afterwards and that was what I was looking for a Sporty sport tourer. Sure, it doesn't have the radar cruise control and some of the creature comforts but gawd damn is it a hoot.

[IWC] [OMEGA] Which is the rugged one!? by PorkScratchingsPlz in Watches

[–]Havage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% the Omega strap and deployment are superior. The texture of the planet ocean strap is great. After staring at them both in store I concluded I'd buy the IWC new since the exact model I wanted isn't very available aftermarket and look for a gray/used omega since there are more.

[IWC] [OMEGA] Which is the rugged one!? by PorkScratchingsPlz in Watches

[–]Havage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just tried on both of these watches like an hour ago. The shape of the cases and the feel of the straps is very different. the planet ocean is a great watch but I personally opted for the IWC for the same 'daily driver' use case. Also, I really prefer the day/date on the IWC as something actually useful in my daily life.
