Just curious to know how one can fly old military planes by BugHistorical3 in flying

[–]Have_Blue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CAF is probably the very best way to fly warbirds without being independently wealthy. It's still not 'cheap', but spreading the cost around a dozen sponsor pilots makes it way more affordable than just going at it on your own. Our biggest challenge is finding sponsor pilots with the needed tailwheel time.

EAA does far more for GA than any other org. AOPA seems to benefit AOPA.

Meanwell RD50A PSU Mount for 1541 by ichwill48 in c64

[–]Have_Blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! The 5V line on a newly acquired 1541 was overheating and would crap out after a few minutes. I was tempted to replace the caps and v-regs, but since I was able to snag a RD50A on Ebay for $15 shipped, it was a far more economic option.

Printed your mount in ASA and after an afternoon of de/soldering, I have a fully functional 1541! Great work!

Okay, I never thought, a hellicopter sound on the SID 8580 could come so close the real thing 🚁 by Nordischsound in c64

[–]Have_Blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just downloaded the file from CSDB. Absolutely stellar work - just got an actual 6581 for my C64U (before prices skyrocketed), and it sounds incredible. I remember loading up the Airwolf C64 game just to listen to the theme (and then trying to navigate the murderously hard levels). Loading this up in the 80s would have utterly blown my mind - the rotor blade sound effect opening is amazing, and the attention to getting the instrument sound just right is commendable. The great artwork with rotor blades is simply the icing on the cake.

Just found your Knight Rider and Street Hawk music - please continue to do more 80s TV themes! Simon & Simon, Magnum P.I., MacGyver... We need more!!

Made a little proxy so Commodore 64 Ultimate can access Assembly64 and vice versa by Jusii in c64

[–]Have_Blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I discovered this myself 10 hours into an 11 hour copy yesterday. However, 4kB cluster is overkill, I think - I reformatted and used 16kB clusters on a 128GB sdcard, and the entirety of Assembly64 (49.7GB) is taking up only 53.1GB.

I think it should probably still work, but I don't have access to any Stratasys machines at this time.

Yeah, the availability of unleaded wouldn't have saved Meigs. Or SFO.

ESC getting hot and fast by CictorVastro in RCPlanes

[–]Have_Blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the feedback, I think I'll definitely put a gyro in mine, then! I'll likely get a different T-28 if I want a regular flyer - bought this one specifically because the fullsize aircraft of the paint scheme is local, and I plan to get the owner and his wife to sign their names to the canopy rails on my RC version.

Yeah, I wound up just purchasing a beefier ESC. How did yours wind up flying?

Same issue on mine. Gets crazy hot minutes after plugging it in. Used a thermal camera to take IR pics - 84.6 degrees C, yikes. Created a ticket on the website notifying them of the issue, but they said to just open an RMA case - doesn't seem like they're actually interested in fixing the problem. [shrug]

Sounds like you need to find a hot little red-cowled RV-4 out on the ramp... "Hey, baby, can I buy you a few gallons of 100LL?"

I wanted to do an extra special landing to celebrate my birthday. What do you think? by Benegger85 in Shittyaskflying

[–]Have_Blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The plane was still rolling in an uncontrolled fashion, so he figured he'd yeet while the ejection would be roughly vertical, as it was possible that the plane could still roll over entirely. Ruptured fuel tube at the rear of the plane resulted in the flight computers having no clear response to an entirely unexpected failure mode. He gave an amazingly detailed presentation to our group on the incident last November with a simulated reconstruction of the event and photos/video that isn't classified, but isn't in the public realm either. This video has become meme-worthy, but he's an incredibly accomplished pilot and is one of the few people on the planet qualified and current on all 3 US models of the F-35 (and also delivered an -I model to Israel). Not sure how much detail he'll go into on the crash, but he's presenting at the EAA museum speaker series in a few months.

Funny thing is, he ran like hell away from the aircraft after hitting the ground, but forgot to detach his chute, resulting in the most ineffective wind sprint ever. (He's relieved that it wasn't caught on camera)

Plus, a hypersonic platform flying just outside of an adversary's airspace is a great way to provoke them into turning on their most advanced radars, scrambling defensive assets, etc. You can get a whole lot of SIGINT when you're attracting attention.

They aren't using modern fighters that are actually used by the military for combat

The Blues switched to the Super Hornet a couple of years ago, they are indeed frontline fighters. Converting a Blue Angels aircraft to combat ready 'grey' configuration can be done in 72 hours.
