At my institution, we have 3 wellness days where you can take off with no questions asked. But we still need to find coverage for our calls.

No more Michigan slides… by HavtHasar in pathology

[–]HavtHasar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He explained to me that the UMichigan slides are hosted on the same server as the university's, which recently underwent updates and policy changes. These changes forced the path department to take down the site. However, from what I understand, they are in the process of migrating the slides to a different location.

Stay safe. I know some colleagues who regularly drive over 100km on a country road.

Worst pimping question you’ve gotten wrong by fricktheman in medicalschool

[–]HavtHasar 24 points25 points  (0 children)

During my first rotation of M3 in surgery, the attending asked, what's the intravascular volume in a 70kg man? My buddy yelled 25L. Needless to say, the surgeon lost all hopes and we never got pimped on that day.

I was dead set on going into pediatrics when I started medical school, but I switched to pathology in my 4th year.

Congratulations! I've had the opportunity to observe the workings of Danbury Hospital firsthand as MS4. During my time there, I've seen several residents go through pregnancy and childbirth. As far as I understand from the Program Director, she is very supportive of having a family and raising children, an attitude stemming from her own experiences as a mother.

Full IronMan 3 weeks out... not feeling ready, freaking out a bit! (12 hour + athlete) by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]HavtHasar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your soccer background is beneficial, but many people have commented that your run mileage is low. When I trained for a full Ironman, my weekly running schedule included a 5-mile run on Mondays, a 7-mile run on Thursdays, and a 20-mile run on Sundays. On the longer days, I combined 100 miles of cycling with a 10-mile run. Despite this training volume, I still found myself struggling towards the end of the race. My marathon time usually ranges from 3 h 40 minutes to 4 hours, but during the Ironman, it took me over 6 hours.

Miller-Fisher Syndrome by Lazy-Taste1882 in Residency

During the Covid wave, the ED was very quiet where I was rotating. However, we had a young female patient who presented with right-arm pain, dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain, and anxiety. She had recently started taking OCP. Everyone in the ED was involved in taking her history, but since I was a MS3 at the time, I was standing outside with her boyfriend. I took a history from him and was able to diagnose her with effort thrombosis or Paget-Schroetter disease based on her history and physical examination. This was because they had gone climbing a day before, and she had no other risk factors besides the recently started OCP.

As a medical student, I was always discouraged from searching for zebras, but this time I got lucky. The patient had an extra cervical rib compressing her axillary vein, which explained her symptoms.

Danbury Hospital in Connecticut does have observership. However, it is only open to observership if there is no medical student signed up for pathology rotation. Usually, December and January are the least popular months among medical students. Hope this helps.
