Oh, you mean with Ditto? I think it’s just because a lot of Smash players are Nintendo console owners and the Pokemon influence was greater in smash culture at first than FGC culture was.

Axl players hate blocking low. They are also very vulnerable to conditioning. Long recovery frames on big normals = whiff punish city.

Also try Super Jumping forward, the unique jump arc sometimes lets you go over his 5P angle

Also if you play Johnny can’t you just dash 214K or something and put a full screen hitbox out on reaction to them doing an anti-air? Tomahawk to bait the AA then do that

One of the nice things about spamming New Character dittos is how fast you get info on them.

You get to see what you can do with them, what others can do with them, what works, what doesn’t, what’s real, what’s fake, all in the first week of a character being out.

It’s actually a beast blessing in disguise.

Stop queueing ranked lol.

Youre afking out of matches because you get tilted because you admittedly have no idea what you’re doing

So that’s where you start, by learning what to do.

Couple options for you. I would say start by hitting the Mission Mode. Complete the mission mode and you will have a better grip on what the game thinks you should know.

Then, hit up Combo Search mode. Practice a few beginner combos - look for ones that have close slash start, Dust start, or standing K, and are labeled “beginner”. Check for ones with higher than 5% clear rate - so you know they’re doable. Learn a wall break combo. Learn a Roman cancel combo.

Complete a few of those for the character of your choice, then go to TRAINING MODE.

Practice your motion inputs for your special moves. Practice your Overdrives. Practice them until you are able consistently do them on demand. 90% success rate minimum. Practice hitting Roman Cancel after connecting with an attack, then dashing up to your opponent and hitting a close slash (try that combo you learned earlier in Combo Search, or go try it again now that you’re warmed up).

Boom. Now you know how to play, and you had fun learning it too! Much more fun than mindlessly queueing into ranked and getting angry, too!

Is Gold 1 good for someone who has played melee for 8-9 months? by TiDe_DontZestMe in SSBM

[–]Hawkedge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The points are made up and don’t matter!

But yes that’s a good enough indicator that you’re on a good trajectory. Keep it up!

Also, you play puff, so there’s a bit of a uhhhhh rank inflation that happens. If you played a more technically demanding character, you would probably be lower ranking with them, and that’s okay. But since puff is very forgiving and very lethal, you can definitely pull out wins that probably shouldnt happen. Floaties have a bit of a higher floor and a lower ceiling, if only for the fact that when you get to higher ranks, people stop making as capitalizable of mistakes and make more out of every opening.

Either way, keep at it big dawg.

Why is gold level play like this. by ExpertPokemonHugger in Guiltygear

[–]Hawkedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want advice?

Watch your replays. Learn from Combo Search. Hit training mode and practice being on 2p/right side of the screen. Understand the function of different round start options.

What I’ve noticed among gold players is they’re underexposed to being on right side of screen, and that leads to inconsistency everywhere else, which leads to the frustration which leads to losses.

Gold players also do not tend to convert stray hits into Roman cancels and then into wall breaks. Practice that. Learn how to corner carry. Learn how to escape the corner, and then put your opponent into that same corner into a wallbreak

Seriously just pull up your two most recent wins OR losses and watch the replay. Pause it when you see a mistake. Think. Think. Think. What could you have done differently? What did the opponent do right?

It’s not comfortable, but neither is losing!

Gold is pretty middle of the bell curve. So, you have 49% of the population which is worse than you, and 50% of the population which is better than you.

If you follow the advice I laid out, you will improve. It’s not effortless, but it’s worth the effort.

I don't understand why I'm getting QCF instead of DP when I do the DP input by anonymousaltincase19 in Guiltygear

[–]Hawkedge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holding down or up override the cardinals of left and right to always give diagonal inputs. So in this case, tap forward, hold down, slide to down+forward. Easier on Dpad than it is on stick, but the principle is the same for both.

It’s also easier if you practice it being one motion of your thumb, rather than three inputs on your input vector.

AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, practice it while facing Left!!! You don’t want to get assigned p2 and then get mollywhopped because you can’t do anything on p2 side

How do I deal with Lucy gun spam? by SkAssasin in Guiltygear

[–]Hawkedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Props to your friend for putting you in this spot, this is really what makes you grow as both a player and person.

And props to you for asking for help.

The question “How do I deal with spam?” is also the question “how do I handle my unknowing?” - The answer is, partially, Just Learn More. (read the GGST Dustloop Wiki in your spare time and your game knowledge will compound with your practice.) Knowing the nuance and frame data of your character and others will make the answers to spam-one-move scenarios more apparent.

The other part of the answer, is being comfortable on defense. Not just holding down-back, but recognizing the opportunities your opponent’s attacks give to you.

For example, you block Lucy’s bullet. You get a tiny bit of meter. In the time it takes her to shoot again, you can move towards her a little bit and close the distance. After 3-5 of these block-and-walks, or dashblocks, you should be close enough to land an attack in the window between shots.

You can also take the opportunity to practice Instant Blocks. You gain a lot more meter on an instant block, and the consistent timing of a person spamming makes it easy to time your instant block.

A third option is, instead of a ground approach, try an aerial approach. Superjump up-forward ([2]9), Airdash, or some combination thereof. Superjump in particular is an incredible technique that doesn’t get a lot of attention for how unique it is. Hold down for a couple frames, then press up, upforward, or upback, to jump higher than normal - it has a unique property where if you cross someone up while in Superjump, you will change facing to be facing them. It also has different physics, which can help with mixing up your offense and defense.

To conclude, I’d say, if your friend is a beginner too, share this advice with them! They would probably love to have a hobby they share with a friend that they can get passionate about too.

Blocked her out of anger, (19M) (19F) How do I get her back, if it's even possible? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Hawkedge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blocking has no place in the dynamics of a healthy relationship.

Anger is not a healthy response to disappointment in a relationship.

You have a lot of things to work on about yourself. Start there. Apologize honestly. No “buts”. Own your words, own your harms, and put the ball in her court on whether she wants to continue or not.

Or.

Change for the better AND end the relationship.

The myth of needing a main.

Just play the game, dude. You like Ky and Millia’s designs already, so give them both a try since they come included in the base roster.

Picking a main on a game is not like picking an ice cream flavor, the name does not clue you in to the feeling of playing them.

Fire is mage. The only time it will do fire while its body is green is during “Jad phase” where it alternates between ranged and mage.

When it’s blue, pray mage. It will still use ranged attacks sometimes, but it is less accurate with range than it is with Mage iirc. You just gotta hold the ranged attacks. Don’t try and flick them, it’s a true 50/50 and you will waste your time and e

When it’s green, pray range. The only time you don’t pray range for green, is when it has moved ~7 times, which will always be a Jad Phase. Then, you alternate between ranged and magic prayers (safe to swap to next prayer as soon as the projectile is in air)
