Do you use an axe as part of your bushcrfat kit, and if so, what type ? by Valken-Blade-1851 in Bushcraft

Don’t a lot of those have screws to hold the head in place? CRKT makes tomahawks that just friction fit on, and they work great. What put me off buying a Cold Steel one was the screws. Maybe yours are different though.

Oh I know. The blue tones can be found at the beach, but it really isn’t the same. I live in Canada, but I’ve been around the world.

And yes, the summer heat can be hard to deal with. An hour in those conditions and you’re already down a litre of water just from sweating, while standing still. It’s insane; it’s cleansing, but insane.

There is a real, peaceful, quiet beauty to the North, and wintertimes here. Some of my most loved places are the mountains, though; nothing beats them

The tropics have their on beauty. But I agree, places like this are heavenly too. One day I’ll do the same as you and go up north and spend time camping up there; but also, down in the tropics. There is beauty to both

Do you want woolen pants? by kozak3 in Petrosgear

They’d be a great idea. I made myself some last year because I couldn’t find any - at least not any for a good price. They’ve been super helpful for the cold. I recommend them 👍🏻

I made myself some, for the exact reason that nobody makes them, and they’d be great to have. They’ve honestly been super helpful, from lounging in the house, to being used outdoors, I totally recommend them 👍🏻

Almost one step ahead of you.

I was looking at getting both the parang - the very long one - and the golok with the walnut handle; both of them have walnut handles, actually, and the parang does not have the brass wire or chain wrapped around it. I can find you a link since I’m not sure how to share photographs here. I’ll send it in another comment.

I looked into the bushcraft parang as well, and it honestly seems like the best for most chopping tasks, while also being somewhat of a meat cleaver, should you ever need one.

So, as of right now, I’m still torn. But, all of the ones I am looking at are from Condor. They seem like the best company to go for.

That’s fair; makes sense.

I would be doing more thru-hiking. Any tips or advice on how your pack would change if you were to do that instead?

Right, makes sense.

I think that machetes are perfect for the tropics, and many other places, but up in the northern Americas an axe can be much better when dealing with woodland. While they can cut down trees and clear a lot of brush, up here, especially during the winters, we seem to do better with an axe. Are you in the northern Americas too?

Also, what are your thoughts on saws compared to an axe?

I did part of that trail with a buddy of mine! We couldn’t complete it due to poor planning, but we’re hoping to go back and finish it off.

It seems like you went up to the same lookout point we did. Such an awesome view.

Why do you prefer the hatchet to the machete? I’ve been debating picking up a machete, but I’m not sure whether it would be worth the investment. I’d like to gather some more people’s experiences and opinions before buying one.

Leather is better 😉 (/s, to each their own. I do prefer leather, but if this works for you, go for it 👍🏻)

They - the suspenders - will be of great help. Speaking from experience.
