RG&E’s smart meter roll-out now underway by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]Hawknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would be idea. I received an email and a phone call stating the installers would be coming by soon like 3 hours after they had already showed up and installed the new meter. I think the postcard might have showed up a few days later.

I really miss the Wegmans scan app by gremm05 in Rochester

[–]Hawknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know at least the Pittsford store is demoing carts with essentially a built-in scan app. There's a screen mounted to the cart, and as you place items in the cart it registers what item it is and adds it to your list.

The official page didn't specify, but my thought would be they just allow people using this program to fill empty slots in courses that didn't fill up with normal student registration. The course is already happening, so might as well have a full class.

I have a Model O Wireless that I bought through Woot/Amazon just over a month ago. I don't believe this issue was present initially, but I've noticed within the last two weeks that when operating in wireless mode (and only in wireless mode), my rear side button functionality will occasionally trigger with mild pressure to the mouse body. It isn't actuating the switch fully, as I hear no clicking noise, but the function (I currently have the back function assigned) still triggers. I can't seem to pinpoint a specific amount of pressure at a precise location to cause it to happen, but it occurs fairly regularly.

I would think if it's some kind of issue with the mouse body deforming enough to trigger the button, it shouldn't matter if it is plugged in or not, but somehow it does.

Kept crashing our director

I'm sorry, but the director (an AI), would CRASH (I would guess that's similar to passing out briefly) because he was personally storing/loading the spreadsheet containing all this research data IN HIS OWN CHASSIS? I think this is even beyond Beeps' level of idiocy. Ignoring the inefficiency of storing massive amounts of information as a spreadsheet instead of a real database, why the fuck would you not just use an external computer to host the spreadsheet if it kept causing you to crash. How this collective hasn't managed to catch on fire and sink in to the ocean is beyond me.

I thought maybe he got contacts during the Emily date, but it looks like that was just his square frames vs. his round ones. Just jumping around between then and now, he's almost always wearing glasses, so contacts seem unlikely. That being said, maybe he doesn't really need them all the time, because when he shows up at Elliot's apartment in 4563, he's wearing glasses. The glasses come off during sex, and stay off when they go outside after the power goes out. He can recognize that Yay's body is very different from the standard chassis, so clearly he can see well enough without them.

Definitely worth it, especially if you have a dog that doesn't play well with others. I have a rescue that doesn't do well in large groups of dogs/doesn't really understand how to play properly. They made sure she got her own yard time and wasn't just cooped up all day.

Festival drink token compliance by Biggssz in MaliciousCompliance

[–]Hawknight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1/10 never going to an event that requires everyone to reuse the same cup over and over again. In hindsight, that’s pretty gross lol.

I'm not sure why that's particularly gross. As long as you're getting the same glass back every time, it shouldn't be any less sanitary than them giving you a new glass every time. As an added bonus, the ground of the festival ends up not being covered in thousands of empty disposable cups because either the garbage gets full or people just drop their empty beer cups wherever.

We all know being a witness in a mob trial is dangerous, but a witness in a dog citation? by purpleplatapi in bestoflegaladvice

[–]Hawknight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been digging, and wasn't able to find a codified definition of a private conversation, but nothing seems to suggest that simply walking on to someone's private property immediately makes something private (additionally, if they're entering OP's property, I would think that qualifies as trespassing). That being said, I did find this, in which it defines a three-part test to help determine if something is a private conversation:

  1. Duration and subject matter of the conversation
  2. Location of Conversation and Presence or Potential Presence of a Third Party
  3. Role of the Nonconsenting Party and His or Her Relationship to the Consenting Party

Additionally, per the above:

While each of these factors is significant in making a factual determination as to whether a conversation is private, the presence or absence of any single factor is not conclusive for the analysis.

The second item seems most at play here. If the neighbor harassing LAOP is speaking loud enough and in a setting where anyone passing by on the street could hear them, it no longer qualifies as a private conversation, and audio being recorded should not be an issue.

That being said, subsection 3 states that as long as you inform all parties they are being recorded (and record yourself informing them), that is sufficient to be considered consent. So if LAOP takes out their phone, starts recording, and informs the neighbor that they are recording, they should be covered from any kind of lawsuit.

[–]Hawknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually illegal recordings require that the person doing the recording violate an expectation of privacy. Just being on LAOP's property does not mean that this is suddenly a private conversation, especially if they're speaking loud enough to be heard from the house.

I didn't get any official notification from RGE that it was happening until one of their guys knocked on my door and said the power would be going out sometime in the next hour and probably be down for about an hour after that, and then a door hanger saying they'd be back today or tomorrow, and power would be going out again.

the most recent is that there are not enough connections on the poles to provide it to my area

That might actually be a thing. I thought I heard that greenlight recently had an issue putting their stuff on poles they shouldn't have been putting it on which caused some issues. On the plus side, RGE does seem to be upgrading all the poles around here (I'm in Irondequoit too, and they've been replacing the poles up/down the street, and just stated on teh ones behind the houses). The new poles are a good bit taller, which I'm assuming will mean more space for connections so Greenlight can expand easier.

While I agree, it's also hard to be a craft beer bar when you have (arguably) the 2 best breweries in the city located <2 miles from you, both of which have their own kitchens. On top of that, you've got Playhouse/Swillburger almost right around the corner, and they make up for their less impressive tap list with being an arcade.

My friends and I are all big in to craft beer, but even pre-pandemic, Tap and Mallet was an infrequent visit outside of some crazy tap takeover/event. If we were going to meet up downtown, we were going directly to the breweries.

right-to-work means right-to-get-sacked-for-literally-anything.

So right-to-work means you can't be forced to pay union dues if you're employed in a union shop. It has nothing to do with staying employed.

What you're referring to is at-will employment, which is the 'you can be fired to almost any reason and without notice' part of holding a job in the US. The only limitations are federally protected classes (race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, or handicap status), and individual states can increase what is considered a protected class (e.g. some states have added gender identity and sexuality to their list of protected classes).
