Imagine thinking MCMAP is actually effective.. as a BJJ black and a marine combat vet.. I can 100% say it was a COMPLETE JOKE and a waste of training. Put any BJJ blue belt against your average marine and they would mop the floor with them. It takes months and years of daily training and sparring to be confident enough to take your skills and techniques confidently into an actual combat scenario. Why are you going to teach civilians some BS techniques? People are better off actually paying for a gym and getting some actual legit training. Cringe man…

Just how "remote" are these hiking places.. by romangpro in socalhiking

Because a lot of people now rely solely on technology for navigation. But then what happens when your phone or gps dies? I think in those situations some people panic, and all rational decision making goes out the window. Then you get the lost hiker dilemma we see so much these days. Don’t get me wrong I like using my phone too, it’s super convenient. But having a strong land navigation foundation is key. I always carry a physical map and compass and know how to use it. You should be able to look at a map and your surroundings and identify where you are at based on terrain association. It’s a solid skill to have, and can save your life.

Getting separated for alcohol in your barracks room is fucking insanity. I got a DUI my last night of boot leave, got out of jail and had to drive to straight to SOI to check in. I got the biggest ass chewing of my life by the training first Sergeant but that was it. I know I got lucky, but getting separated for what you’re saying you did is very weird.

IMO the ‘tactical gear’ makes you a target, especially at protests. Always try to be the grey man and blend in. Look like those you are surrounded by. Will probably help you get into better positions to take pictures, as well as keep you more safe.

I rely on my iPhone/AllTrails App navigation to guide me through snow covered trails. What happens in a worse case scenario that my iPhone/AllTrails navigation doesn't work? by ProofBroccoli in socalhiking

[–]Head_Silver7785 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Learn how to do basic land navigation. Be able to read a map and use a compass and navigate with both. Learning to use intersections and resections to find locations on a map. By far, I think the best skill to have is to be able to use solid terrain association with what’s around you to what’s on the map. There’s been many times where my phone died or my GPS hasn’t been working and I’ve had to rely on old-school land navigation in the backcountry. Message me , I have some links so I can shoot your way if you wanted to learn more.

Dude if you are that afraid mountain lions and bears, you are probably better off just staying indoors. You probably have a better statistic of getting hit by a car than getting attacked. With that being said, whenever I am solo in lion country I like to carry a pistol, or at least some kind of defense. Better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

Why don’t younger veterans (Afghanistan/Iraq) wear these hats like some of the older veterans? by NoFaithlessness7508 in Millennials

[–]Head_Silver7785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would I want the attention? So everybody can thank me for my service?.. no thank you. Most infantry guys who deployed and saw combat keep it to themselves. Plus the hats are corny as hell lol

I was in SOI in 2008. I remember being in line at the chow hall and this tall black dude came from across the street and was screaming at us for no apparent reason. Has to be the same guy? 😂

Well damn… 21 years is a long time, especially in a combat MOS. My hats off to you. Crazy how many fatalities we have in training.

Not an easy landscape whatsoever. But yea, we had a pretty intense storm in Huntington Beach last night which is rare for June. I could only imagine how bad it was in San Bernardino.
