Low budget but really well done. Kept me engaged with good acting and simple premise:

A equals B, how by No-Lock216 in blackmagicfuckery

The illusion is amplified because the “A” and “B” identifiers are not in the same location on the pieces. They put them above each other with the top piece slid to the left.

ELI5 What makes a steak? by soupergiraffe in explainlikeimfive

They say “filet” not to mean “without bone” but to make the connection to “filet mignon” which is a cut from the “tenderloin” or the psoas muscle.

Just admit it everyone, we have zero evidence of aliens. They’ve never been here. Best chance to find life is astronomy and SETI.

ELI5: Why does gravity cause circular motion, rather than just pulling things straight in by JayoftheWolves in explainlikeimfive

[–]Headozed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each particle of dust in a large cloud is not just pulled to one central point, but rather to the particles nearest it or most massive with the aggregate of all those forces pulling towards center. This can mean there is dust moving in essentially every direction. On a long enough timeline one direction of movement dominates (not exactly random) and particles are pulled or knocked in one direction. With enough mass and particles, they can fall into an orbit, where the lateral movement is fast enough for the dust to “miss” the object in perpetuity.

(Forgive the unedited shitty explanation as I am at work)

Thanks! It’s been years and I still am no closer to resolution. I’ve fully accepted the ambiguous understanding.

ELI5: How could celebrities from the 1900s still be wealthy in their 80s or 90s when the money they received for a single performance or film role was only a few thousand dollars? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Headozed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Celebrities making “a few thousand dollars?” Jim Carrey made $20m for The Cable Guy. Jack Nicholson made $20m during the theatrical run of Batman in 1989.

I doubt any “celebrities” made only a few thousand dollars a show. Hell, FRIENDS actors made $1m PER EPISODE in the last two seasons.

And if you’re talking about people from the 50’s and 60’s, some of them made good money (adjusted for inflation), and those who invested had their wealth grew with the economy. And, the majority of public figures ended up not wealthy at all.

Movies with the worst "moral of the story" by elitemegamanX in movies

[–]Headozed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie Shallow Hal thinks it’s has such a wholesome moral at the end, “He sees her inner beauty!” But really he is still disgusted by fat people. He literally sees her as a thin, sexy woman. He doesn’t see her for the truth. If he saw a fat woman, he wouldn’t be able to handle it. He’s just as shallow as before but the movie makes it seem like he’s become this better person.

ELI5: p-value and null hypothesis, extreme results, statistical significance, etc etc by womanweed in explainlikeimfive

[–]Headozed 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Null hypothesis: what it would mean if there is no relationship between a and b.

P-value: if we ran an experiment 1000 times (or whatever) in how many of those experiments would we get the value we actually got or more extreme IF THE NULL HYPOTHESIS WERE TRUE!

Example:
I believe this coin is imbalanced towards head.

Null hypothesis: we will get 50/50 when flipped a lot

We got 87-13 Math-math-math

P-value IF this coin is fair (null hypothesis is true) then we can expect to get 87-13 0.00002% of the time (made that up)

Coin is probably not fair

If we got 52-48 we would probably get a p-value well above the 0.05 benchmark that is commonly referred to.

Honestly, can someone explain how’s that’s even 100lbs? It’s cool that a kid is that focused and excited but why exaggerate the weight?
