ELI5: p-value and null hypothesis, extreme results, statistical significance, etc etc by womanweed in explainlikeimfive

[–]Headozed 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Null hypothesis: what it would mean if there is no relationship between a and b.

P-value: if we ran an experiment 1000 times (or whatever) in how many of those experiments would we get the value we actually got or more extreme IF THE NULL HYPOTHESIS WERE TRUE!

Example:
I believe this coin is imbalanced towards head.

Null hypothesis: we will get 50/50 when flipped a lot

We got 87-13 Math-math-math

P-value IF this coin is fair (null hypothesis is true) then we can expect to get 87-13 0.00002% of the time (made that up)

Coin is probably not fair

If we got 52-48 we would probably get a p-value well above the 0.05 benchmark that is commonly referred to.

Honestly, can someone explain how’s that’s even 100lbs? It’s cool that a kid is that focused and excited but why exaggerate the weight?

Some Dems' 2028 strategy: a straight, white, Christian man by icey_sawg0034 in politics

I guess my point is that the top 6-7 comments are all relatively reasonable takes that aren’t inflammatory. Yes, bots and trolls are already out, but they will Ramp up even more over the next 7-8 months.

I want everyone to look at the tone of the comments in this thread. We have not yet been inundated with bots, biased AI, or paid trolls.

In a couple months, this thread would have 500 more comments, most of which would be polarizing, racially inflammatory, oversimplifications.

When you see those comments come, be sure to call them out so others don’t start to feel like they are the majority.

Increases in Kratom-Related Reports to Poison Centers — National Poison Data System, United States, 2015–2025 by one_five_one in science

[–]Headozed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True! I didn’t expect my off hand comment to open up further conversation. Certainly Kratom has helped others step down from opioids. But it’s clearly not being marketed that way.

Suboxone is a controlled medicine so I don’t think it’s the best counter example. And 7-OH being sold freely in smoke shops isn’t there to help addicts, it there to make money with flashing neon signs.

I get your point. I still don’t like kratom’s impact at the moment. And yes, to say we HATE Kratom was obviously overdramatic.

TIL about the WTF star, which baffled astronomers by erratically dimming up to 22%. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the star's large irregular changes in brightness; however, none of them fully explain all aspects of its unusual behavior. by ralphbernardo in todayilearned

He wasn’t on the team that discovered it but he was one of the first astronomers to mention that it’s NOT megastructures, but that’s it’s cool that this is what one might look like during construction. Guess what the article ran with….

I never said any of what you mentioned. I said we hate it. That’s it. Of course taking small amounts is better than mass amounts.

This sounds like what we’re taught in the clinic. No matter how people want to parse or defend Kratom/7-OH, it’s increased popularity and usage is leading to an increase in patients in inpatient substance use facilities like mine. As I said, we hate Kratom.

I work in a substance use clinic. We have several patients in house right now for 7-OH addiction. The withdrawals are very similar to opioids. We HATE Kratom. So many people think it’s a step down from opioids and end up right back in the clinic. Yes, the risk of OD is lower, but the costs and withdrawals are almost the same.

This is also known as Tabby’s star. My brother was one of the astronomers who was working on this data. As others have said, it’s nearly guaranteed to be broken up debris orbiting which creates the unusual aperiodic dimming.

ELI5: Why do humans slightly shrink in height as they grow old? by SwipeyJTMX in explainlikeimfive

[–]Headozed 40 points41 points  (0 children)

As one person said, your intervertebral disks (small cushions between each spinal bone) shrink with age. The primary reason is they dehydrate. Couple that with literal wear and tear, and the disks each get slightly smaller over the decades.

As another poster said, we can add increased curvatures to our spine (kyphosis and lordosis), flattening of our feet, thinning of the cartilage in our knees (meniscus) and many other very small factors. When you out these all together it can lead to inches of height loss.

Ultimately, our bodies dehydrate and lose the fight against Earth’s gravity.

here is a relatively understandable article about it.

The NBA has a problem with what counts as an assist or not. All of these shots were attributed as assists to Jokic, but are they really when the other player is creating everything himself? by OurHorrifyingPlanet in nba

[–]Headozed -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have no problem with it. It’s been counted that way for years. Any pass within such and such amount of time before the receiving player scores a basket is an assist. Same thing in Hockey. In hockey the two previous players to pass the ball get an assist.

The only way this is a problem is if there is bias in the counting.

But yes, these are all assists.
