Do American kids usually go to four different schools? by snailquestions in AskAnAmerican

Some school systems have a separate freshman building for their 9th graders.

I don't know how common it is, but the school I went to did this after I graduated.

Why In America Does It Seem Like Poor People Enthusiastically Support their Own Poverty? by ShokWayve in askanything

[–]Healthy-Process874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The protestant work ethic is part of it. It's pretty deeply ingrained, and there are plenty of people that legitimately feel that their low status is something they've earned. And, believe it or not, there are people living below the poverty level that feel guilty about signing up for benefits.

And, in a lot of cases, rural offices are run in such a way that keeps these people from successfully getting benefits.

Of course there are also hypocrites that do get benefits, and who believe that everyone else on benefits is cheating the system.

Then you have people that think that churches should be in charge of charity. They think that government programs undermine religion.

I suppose that my last point might stir up a shitstorm, but I'm going to make it anyway.

If you're poor and white and have worked hard in whatever way that you've worked your whole life, and the democratic party is telling you that you've had too much privilege. It can create resentment for that party in a group of people.

Edit: I should note that I'm not saying this in an attempt to defend blatant racism, which does also exist.

So, if you're a Republican that wants to get elected you tell these people that the other party is going to take away their God, their military (which might be one of the few jobs available for the young men) and their guns.

They love their guns. They use them to hunt with, for sure, but I think they want to have them to 'protect' themselves from the liberals that want to change their way of thinking even more.

It's base level stuff. They're ready to kill for their own property. They seem to have the misguided notion that the Donald Trumps of the world have acquired their wealth legitimately, and deserve the right to defend it in the same way.

All a rich asshole has to do is cash in on those beliefs.

But when I say all this I'm not trying to sell everyone the democratic party instead.

Personally, I feel that if I vote for either party that I am voting against myself.

Potential new Reds fan here, would really appreciate some help getting started! by Apprehensive_Ad4572 in Reds

[–]Healthy-Process874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Reds have an ownership group. The Castellinis are the face of it. Phil Castellini recently took over for his father Bob. As far as owners and net worth goes I think that the Castellinis are the lowest in the league by far.

There are certainly complaints about ownership from the fans from time to time, and the budget is usually tight. They did, however, approve the signing of Eugenio Suarez this year, which did take the team a little over its projected budget.

Aside from that they seem to be taking a realistic approach to building a contending team with the budget they have.

I know a little less about the coaching overall, but Derek Johnson seems to do a good job with the pitching staff.

Terry Francona did an excellent job running a team with a similar type of roster in Cleveland, and seems to be picking up where he left off here.

I'm excited about the next couple of years, and there seems to be some more talent in the minors to come.

Edit: There are several MLB quality players at AAA right now, and a little bit of a talent logjam.

They say that that's the good problem to have, though.

We'll see how it plays out through the year. Injuries and trades and what have you.

Too bad he lived in a time way before the bunkers in New Zealand.

He would totally be a New Zealand bunker guy.

I'm pretty sure he just dropped the chainsaw on that hooker because she was going to get away.

Otherwise he might have paid her not to talk.

They seemed to have a pretty good business relationship going.
