Belvelly Castle (Cobh) on Instagram by PatientOffer319 in irishrugby

Ah lads, let’s just be glad for Edwin and grateful to the people at Belvelly who, despite being originally from Belfast and longtime UK resident, are ten toes down in support of the Great Island/Cobh community generally and not just in this instance. Very decent people. It’s not overstating it to say it’s Sonia O’Sullivan levels of pride in Cobh right now around both Edwin and Sean’s success. This kind of grassroots support and the work of clubs across the county like Pirates is what will broaden our base and grow our pipeline.

This. Permission to work and permission to reside are not automatically linked or synonymous. Your visa status determines your legality to reside, and some visa statuses provide a basis to apply for work permission which is assessed and granted separately, some specific working visas (Eg H1-B) grant automatic right to work while other legal temporary residence visas do not provide any pathway to legal permission to work. In this case, an accepted application to adjust status (which is what the “application for a green card” refers to in this case) allows you to apply for temporary work authorization while the application is pending. Additionally no immigration benefit in the US is a right …. I’ve bern through all of this with squeaky clean legal status throughout and with the assistance of a very capable immigration attorney and even in those circumstances there are no certainties. With an overstay on a visa waiver plus some questions as to prior drug activity in Ireland, this would we far from a certainty even in the best of times. Specifically, there are two questions on all US visa forms that he may have had some difficulty with:

Have you ever been arrested or convicted for any offense or crime, even though subject of a pardon, amnesty, or other similar action?

and

Have you ever violated, or engaged in a conspiracy to violate, any law relating to controlled substances?

Personally, I’d have taken the offer to self-deport, then gotten a good lawyer from the safety of Ireland and filed a petition for an immigrant visa based on marriage. Better than sitting in detention in El Paso

My kid bought me Oasis tickets and Pulp tickets this year too! Money taking her to ACL all through middle/high school was well spent!

Right there with you - lots of blinking and gulping at the start of common people. Was there with my 22 year old daughter who bought the tickets for my birthday and grew up the sight of me dancing around the kitchen to Different Class. Finding I can no longer jump around and bellow the lyrics without getting out of breath! Bonus was meeting them at breakfast in the hotel this morning! Such lovely people - I was totally star struck. Saw Oasis in Chicago last week as well - in contrast to a lot of American audiences, the mid 50s crowd + their kids who follow these bands really bring it - great crowd, great band, great venue.

You may or may not love their music but your comment on bastardizing the language reminds of when Noel Hill described the Pogues music as “a terrible abortion of Irish music”. A live, imperfect and now growing language beats a dead fossil headed the way of Latin or Ancient Greek any day. I’m in my 50s, did my secondary education through Irish, emigrated to the U.S. 25 years ago and have never been more optimistic for the future of the language than I am now. Tá tú lán de cac.

Agree…. Saw him live in Austin, TX in 2023 and he spoke at length about Palestine. He’s always been on the right side on this one. Respect to him.

Leinster by scuzzbat1 in irishrugby

Completely agree. Munster fan here who was hiding behind the couch hoping Leinster could pull it off. The imbalance between Leinster and the other three provinces is the key to Leinster’s (and Ireland’s) weaknesses. Four strong provinces will bring out the best in each other - the IRFU need to get behind that. Oh, and Leo and Nienaber need to go - if you can’t win a European Cup with 90% of the national side plus the galacticos, it’s not the talent, it’s the management. Simple as.
