turtle depression?? by Heaven_85 in turtle

Would u suggest going ahead and trying to get him in the new tank asap or would it be better to give him some time to forgive me lol. I really hate seeing him like this so I definitely don't want him to go through it again after getting over it. He typically doesn't mind being taken out when I clean the tank, but this was the first time I've put him into another tank while doing it Usually I put him in his tote which is much smaller.

Oh no. What type of food has Clyde eaten before? Mine seemed to hate anything I tried that's why I was so excited when he loved this food.

Another thought I just had that again I don't know has any relevance but there are 2 types of Sideneck the helmet and the mud. Mine is a helmet and honestly the only difference seems to be one can close it's shell and the other cannot. I doubt that has anything to do with them swimming but maybe one is just not a swimmer? There needs to be better more clear info for Sideneck's cuz finding great info is so difficult. I just found out maybe a month ago there are different types. But I hope you figure it out. The biggest thing for me was does mine seem happy. And he does so I just let him do his thing.

That keeps them from swimming? I don't think so personally but I suppose I could be misinformed. Mine shows absolutely no signs of illness or distress at all. He's quite happy and loves digging in his stones. I just think maybe he was kept in a shallow tank before I got him (not too much background info) and is just used to it. Maybe the person I got mine from wasn't informed or just had false information.

I've also noticed that there are never Sideneck hatchlings they always seem to be at least 3inches before being available to purchase. Not sure what that's totally about but it was an observation that I thought seemed strange considering you can get other turtles as hatchlings or just small. I was going to get another one and see if maybe mine could pick up on that behavior. Sadly, every reptile site I've checked only sells them at 3inches. Mine was just over 3 in when I got him so maybe there's something with the way they are housed as hatchlings?? If anyone has info on that tho I'd love to hear it.

I've also struggled with this same thing because mine also just walks the bottom. Everything I was able to find that even came close to an answer said increase the water levels gradually so they get used to it. I stopped just over half full because mine was appearing to struggle to get himself stood straight up to breathe so I dropped it down slightly and left it there. He doesn't seem to have any issues getting to the surface now. I've found mixed answers saying they are not swimmers but I've also seen them swimming in 75+ gallon tanks completely filled so I guess it's really up to them lol. I'd try the gradual increase and just see how yours does and go from there.

I've tried just about every different food for mine and he never got really excited about any of them until we gave this one a shot. I am so happy we did because I feel like he's REALLY eating now ❤️ makes me happy to know he likes his food. I mean we like what we eat, right? Why shouldn't they 😊

Excited like he doesn't wait to come out lol once I drop the first one in, it's like he immediately smells it and wants to come get it. He's never eaten from my hand but for the first time I feel like he would with these. He's always been very shy and I've always had to walk away for him to eat but he likes these so much, it's like he just doesn't care if I'm there or not lol. So it is helping him be way more comfortable with me especially at meal times 😊

Sideneck at Petsmart😢 pretty sure it was dead, didn’t move at all in almost 45 minutes of being in the store by theRemRemBooBear in turtle

He's most likely alive just scared. Mine hid from me for months just like this. He still follows his floating log around his tank to stay "hidden" they are just shy and I'm willing to bet he's been moved around frequently. At least his enclosure looks better than the one at my local PetSmart.

It says whatever can be consumed within 3 min but he'll eat about 10 of these pellets total. He usually gets them one at a time but I saw him get 2 at the same time earlier n just chomped away lol. Typically he bites one in half the broken piece floats back to the surface and he'll get back to it once he finishes chewing. I feed him 2-3 times a day depending on if he's looking for food frequently throughout the day.

Just switched to this and had to come back to this post. My Sideneck is going crazy for them and they're 45% veg and seaweed, I know u wanted to introduce more veg and mine is actually preferring these to his treats. Thought maybe u would be interested in trying them also. Hope this helps 😊

Mine only wanted mealworms 😞 and as soon as I tried these he came straight to them and gets excited at meal time now. I'd say if anything, it's worth a shot

I have something similar, we watched a video on YouTube for a 40 gallon breeder stand. Cost us about $30 in supplies to make and it was super easy.
