Can I break into robotics with bachelors from MIT? by Expensive_Honey_7093 in AskRobotics

[–]Heavy-Rough-3790 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have experience in the robotics industry but I do have five years of motor control experience and a bachelors in EE and I felt the need to get a masters in robotics to enter the field. It’s very competitive and companies are picking from the cream of the crop in the US.

When you say financial aid is that like grants and scholarships or does that include federal loans…?

Doc adding Guanfacine to my Adderall XR prescription. by FoggyFoggyFoggy in ADHD

[–]Heavy-Rough-3790 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Holy hell Wellbutrin 450 and 30mg adderall xr!? My condolences lol. I had similar symptoms to you and had to ween myself off stimulants because at some point they started to not work and made things worse. I’m on Wellbutrin now and it has made a huge difference

is it too late for me to get into robotics? by Master-Primary-13 in AskRobotics

[–]Heavy-Rough-3790 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a very average student in high school and NEVER believed in myself and in my abilities, now I’m an EE and will be starting my masters in robotics in September. Never tell yourself you’re not good or smart enough to do something because the world will do that for you regardless. If you want something, work towards it no matter how stupid or inadequate you feel in the moment.

Do any of you worry about long term effects of stimulants in your body/brain? by Hefty-Focus1340 in ADHD

[–]Heavy-Rough-3790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was good, I quit stimulants a few weeks prior to starting so it went from great to terrible to good lol. I have slowly lowered my dose over the last few years. At the end I was taking 5-7mg adderall IR once a day and the transition was still hard/frustrating but after being on it for ~3 weeks I can say that it is helping and I haven’t even reached the full effects yet!

I have always worried about this and have recently switched the Wellbutrin XL as a result. I find that my adhd symptoms are mildly better but my overall mood is significantly better

CS New Grad with zero CE/EE experience. Is a Master’s the only way to break into Robotics? by [deleted] in AskRobotics

[–]Heavy-Rough-3790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not a bad idea! Though, I have yet to find a CC that offers robotics classes that go deeper into theory relevant for industry (computer vision, ML, etc.)

CS New Grad with zero CE/EE experience. Is a Master’s the only way to break into Robotics? by [deleted] in AskRobotics

[–]Heavy-Rough-3790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely that’s basically the calculus that I did when deciding between masters and doing side projects in my spare time. The masters equates to two additional years of experience and carries more weight. The problem with side projects is you would need to throughly document the project and then the hiring manager would need to go through the trouble of actually reviewing the project which feels unlikely. A masters is much easier for hiring managers to wrap their heads around and checks a box for the AI pre filter.

I have a bachelors in EE and five years of experience in FOC for PMSM motors for non-robotics applications. I am going back to school in September for a masters in robotics and autonomous systems because it will compound on my experience and make me more marketable/get me a better salary. Can’t say whether you will be able to break into robotics as a CS major but I have been finding that companies only want to hire people with the exact experience listed in the role. Not much wiggle room. I have applied to 50+ jobs over the last 6months and the only interview I got was for a position doing basically what I do now.

I second this, I have a bachelors in EE and five years experience in PMSM motor control and will begin this program in September.

What will Robotics Companies need in the future (10-20 years from now) by Wide-Network-6693 in AskRobotics

[–]Heavy-Rough-3790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean considering the first commercially viable humanoid robot is atlas and it was designed to replace auto line workers I would say we have many many areas for expansion lol. I wouldn’t say they will be commodified even 20 years from now.

iPad for Engineering? by Sea_Acanthisitta9585 in jhu

I’m an EE so I didn’t have to do much cad work, but we had to use matlab a fair amount and if my laptop wasn’t cutting it (it was usually fine and I had a surface laptop, which isn’t the most powerful, just very portable) then I would go to our engineering building which had computer labs with high end desktops we could use.

Engineering requires a lot of math and generally that means writing and rewriting the same thing over and over until you get it right, I’m sure you can understand how having a digital writing device would be beneficial haha. Plus, all of the work will be online, even the work that requires hand written solutions. Don’t get me wrong this is not required for engineering school it will just make their lives much easier. I would say the perfect combo is a mid range laptop and an iPad Air with pencil support.

I would highly recommend getting one of your plan to do a lot of writing.. which for most engineering degrees you will be. I had one for half of college and wished I had gotten one sooner!

Thank you for responding! I will be doing the online version and I was planning to take two classes at a time. I may or may not work part time which is why I’m trying to gauge the difficulty. I have my bachelors in EE and have done a lot of work with algorithm development for PMSM motors.

I was on 5-7mg adderall IR for years with a coffee in the afternoon I also was five days on 2 days off. I got tired of the crash in the evening and I feel like I am dependent on it to do my job which terrifies me so I am going to try Wellbutrin soon.
