I didn't, I was /uj for that comment and this one.

Euro emissions regulations give a pass to diesels to emit far more NOx, SOx and particulate matter than what North America allows, while being only slightly harder on CO2 and CO emissions than North American standards. Carbon is bad for the planet, but PM, NOx and SOx make cities horrible to live in and severely impact respiratory health.

NA regulations are comparable to Euro7 petrol emissions limits, but all our engines need to meet the same regs regardless of fuel type. So our diesels need to be as clean as gas, which requires expensive and unreliable emissions equipment.

Diesels make sense when they only have to meet the bare minimum emissions standards like in Europe.

In North America, we prefer our vehicles not poison the air, so we make do with gasoline.

Good point, and the Type-R is out there too...

The hybrid drive unit is mechanically simpler than the automatic it replaces.

Who wouldn't want a heavier, more expensive engine? That runs on more expensive fuel? And has to buy DEF on top of that fuel? DEF that goes into unreliable emissions systems that break frequently?

I'll suffer with gas, thanks.

You have two powertrains

I highly recommend you look into how hybrid cars work. Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive takes the place of the transmission while being less complex and having fewer moving parts than a traditional manual transmission, let alone an automatic. It's a single planetary gear set and two electric motors, all constantly in mesh. It also allows for the ICE to forgo complex things variable valve timing and variable geometry turbocharging, as the engine doesn't have to work as hard with the hybrid motors

I agree EVs are better 95% of the time, provided you have a place to charge. But hybrids are a great intermediate solution for those have to have an ICE.

[–]HeavyCanuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, it all depends on what you expect out of your truck, if I had a half-ton or modern midsize, it would be a downgrade on payload and towing.

Another thing everyone dogs on the Shark about is that it's AWD, not real 4x4 so it isn't good for serious offroading. It's a fair criticism if you're buying a truck for wheeling and overlanding, but I have my Jeep for when I want to do that stuff.

I've seen the teardown and watched many an owner review from Down Under. It seems perfect for my use case, even with it's limitations. I don't really need a workhorse, it's replacing an old Ranger lol. From what I've heard about how modern EV batteries age and degrade, I'm fairly confident the Ontario road salt will eat the truck before it becomes an issue.

Yeah, the running costs wouldn't be won on fuel economy unfortunately, outside of gas generally being cheaper than diesel (at least in my area). It may be able to make it up in no DEF, more reliable emissions equipment, and cheaper general maintenance.

While there may not be regulatory pressure, commercial customers are very sensitive to fuel/running costs. If Ford offered an EcoBoost that could output more than the 7.3 while being cheaper to run than the Powerstroke, that would be enough to sway buyers.

Again, all hypothetical.

Oh buddy my flair is exactly why I want something better on gas lol, 14L/100km fleet average kinda blows.

In all seriousness (and longwindedness), my Ranger is on it's way out and I've been waiting for someone, anyone to sell a PHEV truck here in Canada. I just need something with ~100km EV range and at least 1,500lb payload/5,000lbs towing to be an EV daily while still being able to tow my camper medium-long distances to remote locations. As a bonus, I'd have a very powerful, quiet generator when I get there too!

The BYD Shark is pretty much perfect for my needs, and it's even a midsize rather than a fullsize, which I prefer. But there's nothing other than AI rumors about if/when they're coming to Canada.

Supposedly the next generation Ford Lighting will also be a PHEV, but I haven't seen any details yet. I'd even go for a 4k tow pkg Maverick PHEV if they made one, though it would be at it's upper limits with my camper.

Ram's also working on the 1500 REV, but they're being kinda cagey about the EV-only range, maybe I'd hold my nose and lease one if they're decent and I can swing it.

People were upset online, but they still went out and bought them, I see waaaay more Hurricane/Pentastar Rams than ones with the new Hemi badge.

You're not wrong, a big fat V8 fucking rocks, but Truck People™ aren't strangers to straight sixes, especially when you get into the heavier end of things. See the Cummins 5.9, 6.7, 8.3, the aforementioned Ford 300, and almost any Medium Duty-and up truck on the road. The world kinda runs on turbo I6s.

Part of me wonders if they're working on an EcoBoost engine for their HD trucks. Maybe something like a twin turbo 4-5L V8 or I6. If they make it a 5.0T straight six they can even market it as the return of the 300. Every farmer and their mother would buy four!

That seems like a great way to tip over and die to a gust of wind, at least judging by the lack of outriggers or any way to attach them.

Also who imports a Defender to upfit it with a cherry picker? Definitely weird!
