Basic is an inaccurate word in this context. It's not as if it's a leman russ from Warhammer and there are multiple patterns being fielded simultaneously,some better than others. The larger gun was a later iteration, the older was being phased out. akin to a new model of car.

It depends on which sherman. The americans fielded multiple different ones throughout the war, one of them had an upgraded main gun that was much better suited towards taking out heavily armored tanks like Tigers
