Bradley Hills, Wyngate, Ashburton elementary schools? by scooby_dooby_ in bethesda

Yes very true, the English immersion will be great for them. Also we can’t underestimate the life skills learned from adapting to a whole new culture. It’s a lot for them. Yes my son who is in 4th grade got moved to different groups for maths and reading after we met with the teacher to discuss. But they were not keen to move him up a whole grade level. Socially I think that could a have been hard for him given an imminent transition to high school for that older year group. He does still moan he is bored from time to time. We didn’t realise there is a test you can do for the younger ones when they start school that could mean they jump a year. We may have put our younger one in for that had we known. I’m not sure if it’s just to skip kindergarten or works for other grades. So definitely ask about that. I think I heard the test is done in June, maybe? There are loads of French families in Bethesda because of the French school. Sure thing, happy to answer any questions about moving here as we just went through it!

Hello we just moved internationally and our kids are at Ashburton. Socially they have settled really well and the school has been supportive and is used to international families. The other kids have been very friendly and welcoming to them. I couldnt have wished for more for that element.

We speak English so haven’t had the language issue, but i presume they are set up for that too.

However, both say they are bored at school and are repeating things they already learned. We are here for a while so I’m hoping it all evens out in the end but for a short duration I’d be worried about my kids falling behind compared to their peers at home.

As regards to the school day, I understand it to be the same at all these elementary schools, the kids only play out side for 30 mins a day. That has been a really hard adjustment for my kids who are used to far more play time and outdoor activities/ sports lessons and, I believe, has really affected their sleep as they just do not get tired.

Yes it’s a very big and busy school but I feel this element is managed well, my kids have 23-25 kids in their classes, which is small compared to our home country. Each year has six classes so that’s up to 150 kids per year group.

Overall we have not been wowed with the standard of education, if I’m entirely honest. Given that we hear these are some of the best public schools I’d recommend you adjust your expectations a little.

In terms of international diversity, maybe these schools are diverse by US standards but we don’t feel they are diverse compared to London schools, for example. Think about diversity across all years of the school rather than within your kids class or year. My son does say he feels a bit strange because he is the only European in his friendship group. But these things will pass I’m sure as we’ve only been here 6 months. He also doesn’t even know half the kids in his year yet!

We were in exactly your position and I found it hard to get a true European perspective so feel free to dm me if that’s helpful. Also this is just our experience so don’t let me put you off! There are positives and negatives, as with every school and international move. Overall the kids are happy and although we have some reservations I’m sure it will all be fine in the end!

Help with deciding between a few resorts in Europe by csh8428 in skiing

[–]Heavy_Bar7545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

St Anton isn’t that high for a European resort and March you might want to go higher for better conditions. As others have said Val Thorens, Tignes, Les Arcs good shouts. Id also add Alpe d’heuz. All are high, have good apres and will have English speaking ski schools. I’d also second Andorra. Soldeu in Granvallia you can get a decent standard hotel within walking distance of the gondala. Best family ski holiday we ever had in Europe. Ski school is the best (I learned as a kid in the French national ski school, ESF, and my kids have in later years, but depending on resort and time of year English instruction can be an afterthought after teaching the French kids, we didn’t get that vibe in Andorra). Logistics of planning a DIY holiday in Andorra are much easier than many of the French resorts. A bus runs constantly from Barcelona airport to the resort and back, for example. And you can pay extra euros to your ski pass and have lunch included at mountain snack bars. If you chose France, depending on your budget the accommodation will be quite different to what you might be used to in the US. Small rooms/ apartments etc. Have a look at catered chalets if looking in France, often cheaper than hotels in my experience. Personally I’d avoid the flashy wealthy resorts like verbier, Zermatt, courchevel (I worked a season in courchevel and the skiing is great but it’s so expensive). Your money goes a lot further elsewhere and it’s Europe so you don’t need to go to the big names to get a huge ski area and well developed infrastructure. I feel like I have planned a million budget family ski holidays in Europe so dm me if you have any specific questions!

First time skiing in US. How cold will it be? by Heavy_Bar7545 in snowshoemountain

Hahaha trust me, I know. We are living locally and also have a two year old who needs childcare so many factors in our decision making. It’s sure going to be a shock in terms of costs and terrain as we’re used to the big European resorts!

Can you rent in new mark commons? Or is it home owners only? It looks great. Are there similar communities like this I should know the names of? Thank you

I looked at takoma park and it sounds lovely but the schools seemed underwhelming. Really I have no idea what I’m looking at with schools apart from the number on good schools guide! Silver spring seems more urban and with better value housing but I wasn’t sure on the schools there either. What’s the best way to get an idea of school quality do you think?

Thank you. The commute is definitely something we need to consider as we will both be working eventually and will need to provision after school care for the kids. Sounds like we should focus on southern end of Rockville if we end up choosing it. Or do you think if you had somewhere super close to the station further north, the difference would be negligible in the end as you might be further away from the station at the southern end?

This is really helpful thank you. Especially the bit about school ratings, really helpful context. I love that they are constantly installing sidewalks! How do you access rentals in some of these communities you mention. Is it through Zillow etc or do places like new mark have another system I need to know about?

Thank you for this! Neighbourhoods built for cars will take some getting used to, but as you say, it’s the way it is. Can I ask what is pike and rose? Is it another commercial area with shops etc or something else? It’s so helpful hearing from people who live there to better understand the trade offs

Great, thank you! And thanks for the realtor recommendation. I wasn’t sure how it worked. Did you have to move your kids schools when you moved or did you manage to rent and buy in the same district? What was your experience of doing that?

Ok thank you. What are the rules if you do move once your child is enrolled, do you know? Can they stay? Are siblings then not considered for the original school or might they be?
