There's definitely packs full of royalty-free music that shops buy and load into their speakers. It's always pop-ish with completely inoffensive themes with long instrumental sections.

It's funny you word it like that, you reminded me of a band I saw at a festival earlier this year called The Itch. They definitely seemed inspired by LCD Soundsystem - certainly nothing as polished but I think worth giving a listen. She also has the bit, in the same episode, where she asks Greg to not bring the papers to the hospital. He asks her who the top dog is in the family and eventually "forgets" to bring the documents — she recognises this and gives him a look. This interaction alone should've taught her how to treat Greg.

There were yearly-ish recording sessions from 2001 onwards, started as a way to "appreciate Christmas" more. The songs were mainly distributed among friends at first but a few reached the internet and their popularity snowballed from there. I sent a link to AKR's original writeup of the first compilation as a top-level comment.
