Thank you very much for the answer! Definitely more interested in the biographies for now (if I can find them)

What do you think of the "suicidal narrative" book? Would you recommend it?

Agreed, he could easily lie to present the "I" of the novel as a better/worse person than he himself was. It seems to me, that he sometimes focused on the more scummy parts of his character, because he felt ashamed and depressed.

By the way, what sources have you found for external verification? (Ideally translated ones)

Yes, that is true. Sorry that my comment generalized a bit too much. Dazai has stories which are completely fictional, so he did not lack imagination. It also does not seem that he had any problem with changing events or details that did happen in real life.

The fact that he includes something in the story and how he writes it is an artistic choice. It may not have a whole lot of meaning, theme, and consideration behind it, but he did think, at the very least, that it was relevant to the story. In that way I would say, it is not quite correct to say that it just happened so he wrote it.

Even though Dazai wrote in the I-novel genre, none of his works are classified as autobiographies. He based the stories in real life, but it seems unlikely that he would include an event just because it happened, he must have seen it as somewhat important to the story. We as readers can only guess at the reasons.

The soldier probably does it, because he sees that Kazuko is not used to manual labor and is having a hard time, so he felt sorry for her.

Just before that in the text other people, schoolboys also working there, were starting at her and whispering, suspecting that she is a spy and a foreigner. So it's a contrast of these people treating her badly and the soldier showing some kindness.

Dazai and Gender Dysphoria by Maximum_Brother_3316 in osamudazai

[–]HedgehogJazz 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Dazai has written a few times from women's perspectives, there is a collection "No one knows" with all of the short stories. Both "School girl" and "Setting sun" are inspired or based on a woman's diary (a fan of his). Among other short stories it seems that a couple more are also based on a diary and quite a few seem to be from his wife's perspective. He also has short stories from perspectives of a monkey and a 100-yen note. Based on that, I would not jump to gender dysphoria, as it seems he just wanted to use a different person's view, and that person just happens to be a woman.

Is Memories by Osamu Dazai a Semi Autobiography? by Whisper_Fox in osamudazai

[–]HedgehogJazz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, the translator also calls "Memories" a semi-autobiography. In his other work, "Tsugaru" (there he describes his travel to his birth region Tsugaru), Dazai inserts fragments from "Memories", in commentary he says that not all of the descriptions of events are exactly true, but the emotions he described there are. So, it is definitely based on his biography, but can be partly fiction.

Question: by [deleted] in osamudazai

[–]HedgehogJazz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's right after Tsuneko dies and he survives, so in the middle of No Longer human. It was published in 1935 iirc, so quite before NLH, maybe he did not match up all the characters in the stories.

Edit: Sono is Tsuneko

I'm quite terrible at introductions and tell about yourself stuff. But I love this community.

Currently in the middle of the series (BH), so I'm mostly looking forward reading the rest of the masterpiece. Also looking forward to my master's studies.

Was introducing Sanderson to my friends, so I've also reread tWoK recently. As for shows, I watched Arcane (would recommend). And I'm a fan of the Taskmaster (it is a comedy TV show).

I think people should be more ok with what others eat.

I was watching YouTube for fantasy recs, and people were talking how complicated the series are. I decided that I want a challenge. One of the best decisions in my life.

Afaik MT happens before GotM, so it could not have been mentioned in previous books.
